UNIT FIVE Unit Five I. Complementary and Alternative Medicine (Week 1) A. Complementary generally refers to using a non-mainstream approach together with conventional medicine. Alternative refers to using a non-mainstream approach in place of conventional medicine (National Institutes of Health, 2013). B. NCCAM has three sub-groups of CAM practices: Natural Products, Mind and Body Practices and Other Complementary Health Approaches. 1. Natural Products are also known as supplements which can include: herbs/botanicals, vitamins, minerals and probiotics. 2. Mind and Body Practices include acupuncture, massage therapy, meditation, movement therapies, relaxation techniques, spinal manipulation, tai chi, qi gong, hypnotherapy, healing touch, and yoga. 3. Other Complementary Health approaches encompass homeopathy, naturopathy, Ayurvedic medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine and traditional healers. a. c. Discussion of CAM therapies students have utilized as well as ones of interest. II. History of Chiropractic: Spinal manipulation done by Hippocrates as well as by Galen a Greek-born Roman physician who lived in the second century AD. Founded in 1895 by Daniel David (D.D.) Palmer.

UNIT FIVE A. Fundamental principles: 1) that vertebral subluxation (spinal misalignment

causing abnormal nerve transmission) is the primary cause of virtually all disease, and 2) that chiropractic adjustments is its cure (Micozzi, 2011). Chiropractors believe in the bodys innate ability to heal itself. Health is more than the absence of disease and a certain lifestyle must be maintained in order to maintain health. 1. Simplistic principles of chiropractic ensured its survival as a medical system as well as ensured it would be targeted by allopathic medicine. a. The American Medical Association (AMA) was found guilty of antitrust violations for having engaged in a conspiracy to contain and eliminate the chiropractic profession (Micozzi, 2011). b. Harvey Lillard cured of 20 years of deafness after one chiropractic adjustment by Dr. D.D. Palmer however results were rarely duplicated (Micozzi, 2011). B. 6 Core Chiropractic Principles: 1) Structure and function exist in intimate relation

with one another. 2) Structural distortions can cause functional abnormalities. 3) Vertebral subluxation is a significant form of structural distortion and dysfunction and leads to a variety of functional abnormalities. 4) The nervous system occupies a preeminent role in the restoration and maintenance of proper bodily function. 5) Subluxation influences bodily function primarily through neurological means. 6) The chiropractic adjustment is a specific and definitive method for the reduction or correction of the vertebral subluxation. 1. UNIT FIVE IV. Homeopathy (Week 2)

A. Homeopathy is a system of medicine which involves treating the individual with highly diluted substances, mainly given in tablet form, with the aim of triggering the bodys natural system of healing (National Center for Homeopathy, n.d.). 1. Homeopathy is based on the principle that you can treat like with like, that is, a substance which causes symptoms when taken in large doses, can be used in small amounts to treat those same symptoms (National Center for Homeopathy, n.d.). a. Homeopathy was discovered by a German doctor named Samuel Hahnemann. B. Homeopathic Remedies 1. Prepared by specialist pharmacies using a careful process of dilution and succession (a specific form of vigorous shaking) (What is homeopathy? The Society of Homeopaths, n.d.). 2. The final selection of the remedy given to the individual is based on a total fit to the symptoms exhibited. C. UNIT FIVE V. Qigong or Qi Gong (Week 3) A. What is Qigong? Qigong is an ancient Chinese health care

system that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques and focused intention (The National Qi Gong Association, n.d.). B. All styles have three things in common: they all involve a posture, (whether moving or stationary), breathing techniques, and mental focus (The National Qi Gong Association, n.d.). C. Health benefits include: stress reduction, build stamina, increased vitality and an enhanced immune system (The National Qi Gong, n.d.). 1. Watch video: What is qi gong and why would I want to do it?
