Welcome to the Energy Capital of the nation. More than 40 percent of U.S. energy production takes place in Campbell County, an area rich in coal, oil and natural gas. Youll discover the energy that drives this community as you flip through the following pages. Its in the eclectic shops and restaurants in downtown Gillette. Its in the parks, playing fields and recreation centers, and in the people who call Campbell County home. BEST OF THE WEST Located in the northeast corner of Wyoming, not far from Devils Tower, Campbell County offers wide-open living. Residents get to experience the adventure and excitement of the West. Hunters flock here to track down mule deer, antelope and trophy American bison. Many residents enjoy horseback riding, hiking and blazing trails on ATVs and snowmobiles. Small lakes and ponds offer opportunities for fishing. CAM-PLEX, the largest events facility in the West, hosts rodeos, concerts and rallies. Sports leagues for children and adults are run by the Campbell County Parks and Recreation Department, which oversees a large recreation center with workout facilities and an indoor climbing wall. STRONG ECONOMY The construction of new homes is a sign that Campbell Countys economy is growing. Several new businesses open their doors each year, and the countys hospital is in the midst of completing a major expansion. Work is never hard to find either. Five of the areas top employers are connected to the coal mining industry, which is developing clean and efficient ways of extracting, transporting and using coal to provide power to the nation.

FROM EDUCATION TO SPORTS TO JUST PLAIN FUN, CAMPBELL COUNTY CATERS TO KIDS
hether moving across the country or just across town, one of the first considerations of families with children is the quality of their prospective communitys schools. A concern that runs a close second: What amenities does the community offer for kids?

In addition to CCSD students, Gillettes Science CenterAdventurarium welcomes more than 8,000 visitors annually.

Ann Neary had just those concerns in 2008 when her husband Shawn Neary accepted the job of launching the mens basketball program at Gillette College, and the couple prepared to move from Montana to Gillette with their four children. We were nervous about it, she says. But Gillette welcomed the Nearys with open arms. It is a wonderful place to raise a family, Neary says. The Neary children ages 7, 9, 11 and 13 have attended preschools, elementary schools and now junior high in Gillette, as well as participated in several activities. CAMPBELL COUNTY SCHOOLS AND MORE The Campbell County School District is the third-largest in Wyoming and continues to grow. It recently hired 80 new teachers and has a district average student/ teacher ratio of 18-to-1. District facilities include a planetarium that underwent a $2.8 million equipment upgrade in 2011; an aquatic center at which every CCSD student takes swimming lessons; and the Science CenterAdventurarium a fun, hands-on learning lab for district students. Ann Neary cant say enough good things about the schools. The staff, the teachers, the principals, the secretaries theyre all just so easy to work with, she says. If you need something, theyre on it. They just go out of their way, above and beyond. The Aquatic Center is phenomenal, and the planetarium is also amazing.

The private Preschool Academy, where Nearys youngest daughter attended preschool, is so popular it has a waiting list. It also recently expanded, adding space and teachers to meet demand. The Boys & Girls Club of Campbell County likewise provides learning and development resources for area youngsters. EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES FOR CAMPBELL COUNTY KIDS And the extra-curricular activities for kids abound. Neary runs down a list that includes basketball, soccer and swimming at the Campbell County Recreation Center, an amenity-packed facility with a 42-foot climbing wall in the lobby. Summer sports camps, football, gymnastics and dance programs are popular. Ice sports are big in Gillette, too, with hockey, figure skating and recreational ice skating available at Spirit Hall Ice Arena, located in the east end of the Wyoming Center at the CAM-PLEX. Camelanes Bowling Center offers youth and adult leagues, as well as open bowling and birthday party facilities. Automatic bumpers are available on every lane for the littlest bowlers. Razor City Skateland roller rink also has birthday and private party options in addition to open skating. The Ava Community Art Center nurtures creativity with a variety of kid-friendly arts and crafts classes. There are so many things for kids that its almost overwhelming, Neary says.

The restaurant prides itself on freshly flown in seafood and fine cuisine styles more typical of larger metropolitan areas like Denver. We specialize in seafood, steak items, great wine and cocktails, Byrd says. CRAFT BEER Craft beer is huge in Gillette. Prairie Fire Brewing Co. officially opened their doors in September 2013, providing the public not only with their beers (13 currently on tap try the Cream Ale or the Bushwacker), but a huge tasting room where burgers, wraps and a variety of delicious pub food is available. We have the most Pacific Northwest style of beer in Wyoming, says Prairie Fires head brewer, Mike Converse. Theyre maltier than most of those in this region. Gillette Brewing Co., also new in 2013, brews up some excellent beer, too. Pair your beer with wood-fired pizzas made on site by Pizza Carrello. The brewery is open Monday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Sunday from 4 to 10 p.m. and for special events during NFL games and live music performances. With six regular beers plus guest brews and seasonals on tap, theres plenty to choose from (try the Tall Canyon Porter or Locomotive Brown).

THINGS TO DO

Try a Bite of Campbell County BBQ

Pokeys BBQ and Smokehouse serves barbecue sandwiches, pulled pork, ribs and more in Gillette.

Lovin the
by JASON ZASKY

Cue
B
arbecue is a popular topic in Campbell County these days, thanks in part to Jo-Bawbs BBQ, a Rozet-based husbandand-wife barbecue team that has single-handedly raised the profile of Gillettes barbecue scene.

COMPETITION FUELS RESIDENTS DESIRE TO TAKE BBQ TO A HIGHER LEVEL

Staff Photos by WENDY JO OBARR

Lon Mitchell of Jo-Bawbs BBQ prepares brisket and ribs using a custom smoker.

In 2013, the pair competed in 17 events around the country, earning a trip to the Jack Daniels Invitational (the Super Bowl of barbecue competitions), where they finished seventh among 97 teams from around the world, taking third place in brisket. This is the first time a Wyoming team has ever qualified. It was the highlight of our lives as barbecuers, says a proud Lon Mitchell, the male half of the duo, before noting that Jo-Bawbs caters special events when in-between competitions. For the uninitiated, a competition barbecue team cooks four meats chicken, pork ribs, pork butt and beef brisket at all Kansas City Barbeque Society events, KCBS being a national nonprofit organization that promotes Americas favorite cuisine and defines the rules and regulations for officially sanctioned competitions, which resemble what youd see on Destination Americas BBQ Pitmasters . Judging is done in the blind, and the team with the highest number of points across the four categories is declared the winner.

SMOKIN ON THE PRAIRIE One of the competitions that Jo-Bawbs entered in 2013 was the Smokin on the Prairie Charity Barbeque Cookoff, which is held the second weekend of every August at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Gillette and features a $10,000 purse. We had 25 entrants this past year, says event organizer Steve Thomas, and about half of those were serious competitors who hoped to win and get the automatic entry to the Royal, referring to the American Royal World Series of Barbeque Invitational, the largest barbecue contest in the nation. Weve competed at Smokin on the Prairie [twice] and won Peoples Choice both years, adds Mitchell, who utilizes a custom smoker (its nothing fancy, but its efficient) in competition. Yet, he insists that the smoker one uses isnt necessarily all that important. Its what you do during the prepping and cooking of the meats that makes all the difference, he explains. Both Mitchell and Thomas believe that the local barbecue scene is only going to get bigger and more competitive as time goes on, noting that 11 teams from

Gillette competed at Smokin on the Prairie in 2013, and 14 the year before. Ive been inspired to take barbecue to a higher level because of Gillette and because of the competitions, Mitchell says. POKEYS BBQ Of course, one neednt be part of a contest to enjoy barbecue in Gillette. A hungry diner can visit Pokeys BBQ and Smokehouse, for instance, a friendly, family-based business that serves up helpings of restaurant-style barbecue, and also offers steaks, seafood and an all-you-can-eat salad bar. Barbecue is growing by leaps and bounds. Its amazing how many people get into it [here]. People you wouldnt even think about have smokers and smoke meat, Thomas says. There is definitely a love affair with barbecue in Gillette, Mitchell says. But, you know, there is also a love affair all over the nation for good barbecue.

HAVE IT COOKED YOUR WAY

The food at JORDANS Western Dining earns rave reviews, especially the hand-pressed burgers and the steaks and chops, which are cooked over an open flame using a proprietary custom blend of wood. For its part, The Chophouse Restaurant has earned a devoted following, thanks in part to its hand-cut Certified Angus Beef steaks.

The Open Range Steakhouse in Wright serves thick, tender slices of Angus beef and bison meat from the nearby Durham Ranch. The restaurants allyou-can-eat lunch buffet guarantees a full belly.

With the oil field development that has taken off recently, jobs are plentiful. And as there is more and more development in the uranium fields, oil fields and coal mines, the area will remain strong. Wright has a great future.
BRANDI BEECHER, WRIGHT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR

But Wright also enjoys an excellent quality of life and an economic outlook most cities would envy, thanks to the booming minerals industry. Economically we are not as strapped as maybe some other places, so we are able to have nice facilities, good streets, several parks and a new state-of-the art rec center thats probably nicer than any rec center in a town this size in the U.S., Mayor Tim Albin says. NEW AMENITIES ENRICH LIFE The highly anticipated $11 million Wright Recreation Center, which opened in October 2013, has been a jewel in Wrights crown, offering area residents a pool, hot tub, basketball and volleyball courts, cardio room, weight room, spinning room, party room and more. The towns various parks provide upgraded playgrounds, picnic facilities and sports fields. Gibson Park sits next to the recently opened town library. Wright is also enjoying a new county visitor center, where travelers can explore interactive

exhibits on the history of the area, the minerals industry and ranching. We get a lot of people who come through on their way to Mount Rushmore or Yellowstone, and we try to give them an idea of what northern Wyoming is about and explain why people are out here in the middle of nowhere, Albin jokes. NEW AG CENTER WILL BOOST DEVELOPMENT A new town hall is expected to open in 2014, and should accommodate Wrights need for at least another 25-30 years, he says. Also on the horizon is a new agriculture center, a partnership between Wright and Campbell County. Work on the center is expected to begin in spring 2014. It will be a multipurpose facility oriented toward horses, where people can board their animals, and have use of indoor and outdoor arenas, says Brandi Beecher, Wright economic development coordinator. Its also an economic development

Established to accommodate workers who flocked to newly opened coal mines, the town was at first a collection of trailers, then a few houses, and now a full-fledged municipality. It offers the smalltown friendliness you might expect in a community of 1,807 (another 700-800 live in the surrounding unincorporated area).

The Wright Branch Library includes books, magazines, CDs, DVDs and more, and has activities for all ages.

The Wright Centennial Museum features exhibits showcasing the areas history and growth.

opportunity, where we can host an event and bring people into the community. At this point in Wrights life, economic development is all about making our community more attractive to people and businesses, Beecher says. Part of the challenge of being such a young community is commercial development and keeping up with population growth as far as housing goes.

Its hard to attract businesses without adequate population, and with limited commercial space available. And housing is an ongoing challenge, too, she says, but both are being addressed. With the oil field development that has taken off recently, jobs are plentiful. And as there is more and more development in the uranium fields, oil fields and coal mines, the area will remain strong, Beecher says. Wright has a great future.

BUSINESS: OVERVIEW

Oil Rich

CAMPBELL COUNTY IS THE ENERGY CAPITAL OF THE NATION After decades of decline, oil production in Wyoming has been on the upswing for the past few years. And Campbell County is the center of all the activity. For instance, Wyoming operators produced more than 57 million barrels of oil in 2012, an 11 percent increase since 2009. The increase in oil production is partly due to the emergence of new technologies, such as horizontal wells and hydraulic fracturing. In 2013, nearly a third of all the barrels produced in the state came from the Powder River Basin in Campbell County, according to the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.

Located seven miles north of Gillette, the station is fueled with coal that arrives through a 1-mile conveyor system. The Dry Fork Stations estimated maximum net output could provide electricity for about 308,000 homes.

Economic EXPANSION

GILLETTES HEALTHY BUSINESS CLIMATE CREATES JOBS AND SUPPORTS LOCAL INDUSTRIES

n recent months, a number of new businesses have opened in Campbell County, while several existing companies have expanded. The changing business landscape signals a growing, thriving economic environment in Gillette and across the region.

Campbell County is a good place for our business because there are lots of good paying jobs, taxes are low, and the county and city are continually growing, says Torrey Wingert, vice president and chief financial officer at Bomgaars, a home supply store that opened its first location in Gillette in 2013. Bomgaars isnt the only company that sees the economic promise of Campbell County. A number of other retailers and service companies have made decisions to invest in the area recently.

NEW AND EXPANDING RETAIL The new, 50,000-square-foot Bomgaars store in Gillette opened in June 2013. Like the other 65 stores in the Bomgaars chain, the store includes several major departments: lawn/garden/nursery, clothing/footwear, pets/animals, automotive supplies, paint, hardware, tools, housewares and toys. We chose to open a store in Gillette, as we felt it was one of the last large cities in Wyoming without a good sized farm and ranch store, Wingert says.

Quality Cooking Supplies

Heaven to Earth offers rare olive oils, balsamic vinegars and other specialty culinary products, making it a favorite destination for Campbell Countys cooking enthusiasts.

Gillettes new Bomgaars store is a one-stop shop for lawn and garden items, such as grass seed, mowers and tillers, and fertilizer, as well as clothing, tools, seasonal decorations, toys and automotive supplies.

Established Retailer Sets up Shop

While the new store has been received well by the community, Bomgaars expects continued growth in our store in Gillette as customers are still getting used to who we are and what we sell, Wingert says. We are truly a fourseason store and promote heavily year round with sales and events. Bomgaars isnt the only new retail development in Campbell County. Also in 2013, Universal Athletic, which sells and services athletic gear for local athletes, high schools and colleges, moved to a bigger location. While the company is not new to Gillette, it continues to invest in the local community and its business in Campbell County. Heaven to Earth, a locally owned gourmet cooking store, opened in Gillette in 2012. Gail Winterholler, who owns the shop with her daughter, says the community has been an ideal place to sell her wares, which include coffees, teas, oils, vinegars, herbs and cookbooks. Customers have responded well to the shops active social media presence, weekly giveaways and cooking classes. INDUSTRIAL SUCCESS STORIES In addition to retail, the Campbell County economy is experiencing growth in the industrial sector. Arnold Machinery Co., a distributor of construction, mining and agricultural goods, built a new, larger building in Gillette in 2012. The new location allows the company to serve more customers in the region and represents continued investment in Campbell County. Interstate Power Systems, which has had a location in Gillette since 1972, has also undergone major

expansion in the area. To facilitate new services for its customers in mining, oil and gas, and over-theroad customers, Interstate Power expanded from approximately 40 employees in Gillette in 2007 to 185 by 2011. Expanding its employee base required significant investment in facility, says Russell Groombridge, branch manager for Interstate Powers Gillette office. The new facility, which opened in June 2012, took the company from 27,000 square feet to approximately 72,000 square feet. Campbell County has significant energy resources and has been home for Interstate since 1972, Groombridge says. We have long-term outstanding relationships with our customers and the community that we support. Campbell County offers great services, education facilities, and entertainment that is attractive to employees and potential employees.

BUSINESS: CHAMBER REPORT

Take the Lead

Following a tradition of strong community leadership, the Campbell County Chamber of Commerce launched the Young Entrepreneurs Academy in 2013. The academys goals are similar to those of the Gillette Area Leadership Institute, a chamber backed program that helps turn residents into stronger leaders.

CHAMBER BACKS TWO IMPORTANT LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS

Gillette Area Leadership Institute gives 20 adults each year the opportunity to learn behindthe-scenes aspects of our area to help them become better leaders in their companies as well as the community, says Julie Simon, chamber president and CEO. Meanwhile, the Young Entrepreneurs Academy allows students to learn about business to actually launch their own products or ideas. GILLETTE AREA LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE Gillette Area Leadership Institute is a nine-month program with participants meeting once a month to learn about the community. For example, members experience an Energy & Ag Day to tour a coal mine, power plant and ranch, then another month will involve a Social Services Day to become informed about nonprofits. The participants also do a class project, Simon says. One year was Habitat for Humanity, and last year the class developed an endowment scholarship at Gillette College to help deserving students with tuition costs. YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY

At the academy, students meet once a week after school for 30 weeks to develop a business. Students are advised by business professionals and eventually go before an investment board to pitch their idea and hopefully receive investment money, Simon says. Ideas launched in the 2013-2014 Young Entrepreneurs Academy include plans for a lawn care company, a 5K walk backed by the business sector and commercial kitchen. We live in an entrepreneurial community, and the chamber is also working with the University of Wyoming and city leaders to start a business incubator in Gillette during the next couple of years, Simon says. Whether its students or adults, this chamber knows how important leadership is when it comes to advancing our community today and tomorrow. by Kevin Litwin
