Directions: Find one scholarly article about a controversial topic that can later be developed into an argument. Read the article and write an analysis. The introduction must state a problem, create a context for the analysis(introduce and summarize the object, event, or behavior to be analyzed, and provide motivation for the reader to read and the writer to write), and provide background information. The introduction must also introduce the author(s) whose work(s) will provide principles for analysis and contain a thesis statement. The thesis statement must follow the following format: By applying principle (or definition) X, we can understand (topic) as (conclusion based on analysis). The body paragraphs thoroughly develop the analysis in a systematic manner, answers the So What? question, and provides more than just a summary The conclusion contains a summary of the analysis and all essential elements of a well-written conclusion. A larger point is made. MLA format must be followed. Sources must be properly cited in-text and on a works cited page. At least one in-text citation must include an attributive tag. At least one in-text citation must be basic and include correct parenthetical information. Plagiarism is avoided. Grammar and mechanics will also be graded for accuracy. Particular attention will be given to topics already covered in class. More than ten grammatical errors will result in no grade. Evidence of each stage of the writing process must be submitted: prewrite (brainstorming); planning (outline); drafting; revising (peer review form); and publishing (final copy). The target length is 3-4 pages. This total does not include the works cited page.
