A Sporting Centre of Excellence
The College is renowned for its sport courses and is a Centre of Vocational Excellence featuring its own sports fields and a brand new, all-weather playing surface. A purpose built sports hall is also being constructed ready for the new academic year.
A Unique Union
The College is part of one of the largest educational campuses in Europe and enjoys close links with neighbouring Loughborough University. In a partnership which is unique in the country, students at the College can become members of Loughborough Students' Union.
Getting to Loughborough
Loughborough is centrally placed with excellent transport links.
Road
The M1 is less than three miles away giving easy access to most parts of the country.
Rail
Loughborough train station is at the heart of the rail network and you can be in the centre of London in less than an hour and a half at peak times. Frequent services to the major cities of Leicester, Derby and Nottingham are also popular for shopping and entertainment.
Bus
There are good local bus links with a service running between the university, College, town centre and train station, every ten minutes during the day. A bus service also operates hourly from the train station and town centre to Nottingham East Midlands Airport.
Coach
Coaches run regularly to major cities from the centre of Loughborough.
Air
Nottingham East Midlands Airport is just a fifteen minute taxi ride or drive away offering regular flights to Europe.
National Benchmark
These are the latest National Benchmark results for all General Further Education Colleges in the UK, released by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) in 2002-03.
Achievement
This is the percentage of learners who pass their course. College results have improved from 2003/4, for each of the qualifications listed.

Student Life
At Loughborough College we provide many opportunities to make the most of your time as a student. The College's Student Liaison Team works with students to organise trips, volunteering activities, social events and sporting activities. We encourage students to take full advantage of the many social opportunities. Loughborough Sport Centre
Our facilities for sport and leisure are excellent. We have a fully equipped centre with state-of-the-art fitness equipment, sauna and solarium. In the sports hall you can choose from a wide range of activities including five-a-side football, basketball, badminton, indoor hockey and a variety of exercise and circuit classes. Special student membership rates are available.
Elite Salons
The Elite Hair, Beauty & Complementary Therapies salons offer a range of treatments including: cuts, colours, massage, facials, sauna, steam cabinet, and whirlpool. All trainees are supervised by professionally qualified staff.
Experience Travel
A travel agency is based on campus and available for staff and students for a range of travel needs. Experience Travel is a sub branch of Travel Search, a member of the Freedom Travel Group. Accommodation
The College offers a wide choice of accommodation including self-catering halls of residence and approved host families. The halls of residence are a collection of houses situated around the College campus. We have a selection of single and twin-bedded rooms available, some with en-suite facilities and Internet connection. We also provide accessible accommodation within the halls. Progress Tutoring
All full-time students meet their Progress Tutor weekly. They will help you manage your learning effectively and will give you regular feedback on your progress. They can give you advice on careers, training opportunities and further courses. They will also provide you with friendly, confidential support through any problems you might have during your time at College.
Counselling Service
A free, full-time, professional counselling service is available to support all College students during term-time. The service is strictly confidential and can help you deal with any personal problems during your time at College and support you in achieving your goals. It is important that you have the information, advice and guidance you need to plan your long-term goals. We offer access to impartial careers guidance appropriate to your needs. Childcare
The College offers full-day and sessional care for children aged 0-5 years at the Radmoor Day Nursery and Student Nurseries. There is also an after school club and holiday club available for children aged 4-12 years. The nursery has recently received its best ever independent Ofsted inspection, which praised the excellent care and facilities across the board. Learning Facilities
Learning Resources Centre
The Learning Resources Centre has a large collection of books, magazines, videos and multi-media facilities. Networked computers offer Internet access, email and the Office 2003 suite of programs, as well as a wide variety of online resources on the web. There are colour/black and white printing facilities, a photocopier, scanners and video playback equipment.

Whether it is for enjoyment, interest, professional updating, career advancement or career change, the number of people returning to learning later in life is increasing all the time. At Loughborough College we particularly welcome 'mature' students. We can assure you that age is no barrier to entry and that, if you want to learn, we will support you every step of the way. Subject Areas of Particular Interest
All courses offered by Loughborough College are open to adult learners. The course listings show entry qualification details and once you start, your Progress Tutor will assist and support you. This symbol indicates that the course has been identified as 'adult friendly' and meets the following criteria: Delivered within school hours or outside the working day Studying on the course should not affect eligibility for state benefits Flexible entry requirements and prior learning/experience is taken into account The course has a history of successful outcomes for adult students The course has previously met adult students' expectations
Experience Counts
If you are over 21 at the start of the course and don't have the formal qualifications for entry, you will be expected to provide evidence of your motivation to study and any relevant experience. Simply apply for your chosen course following the usual procedures. We appreciate that you may not have the necessary formal qualifications for entry and therefore most courses will take account of your skills and experience to date when considering your application. When we receive your application, we will invite you to come to the College for an informal interview. At this interview the tutor will discuss your prior learning and experience with you. If the tutor feels that you have sufficient relevant skills to start on the course, you will be offered a place. The tutor may feel you would benefit from additional study before commencing your chosen course. They may recommend an Access to Higher Education programme.

International Links
Today, and increasingly in the future, students will find themselves in an international job market. In order to ensure that our students have the opportunity to be equipped for this wider context, we continue to develop international links and initiatives. Loughborough College has developed a number of links with colleges, universities, training providers and employers in other countries. There are opportunities for visits and exchanges as well as for learning foreign languages and understanding different cultures and working practices. We have partnerships with organisations in Austria, the Azores, Belgium, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, and the U.S.A. The opportunities are there - many of them with financial support. We hope you take advantage of them! Our international reputation attracts students from all over the world, many of them from Europe. For students coming to Loughborough College from abroad, our excellent facilities for learning English as a foreign language ensure your language skills are developed to the full. There is also a wide range of opportunities to learn English alongside vocational or academic programmes.
Derby University The College enjoys a close relationship with Derby University in the field of teacher training. A one year, part-time Certificate in Education (FE) course has been created in partnership with the university. Traditionally the course runs over two years, but the shorter alternative recognises the teaching qualifications and experience that has already been gained by many teachers in the FE sector. Leicester University Loughborough College is currently working with Leicester University on a number of new course initiatives. These include the new Foundation Degree in Health and Illness and a range of professional qualifications, all validated by the university. Staffordshire University A growing partnership with Staffordshire University is making itself particularly evident in the validation of new top-up degrees for Leisure Management and Tourism Management. Further courses are being developed in this area. Sports Organisations Loughborough College provides education and training programmes for the academies at Derby County FC and Leicester City FC and will be working with more Premiership football clubs in the future. The College has also worked with Leicester Tigers Rugby Club to launch a major community health and fitness initiative, as well as on the education programme for its academy scholars. RNIB College RNIB College, Loughborough is a specialist residential college for people with disabilities. The college is situated on the same campus and works in close partnership with Loughborough College. This ensures that students have a highly supportive environment of a specialist college together with fully supported access to the varied courses available at Loughborough College.

Full-time EU Students
European Union students who qualify as ordinary residents of a member state will be charged fees at the same rate as home students.

You may be eligible for financial help with your study costs (including childcare) from the College's Learner Support Fund. Step 4
We will invite you to attend an informal interview and/or Open Day where you will be able to discuss all aspects of the course you have chosen and any alternatives you may still be considering (this step does not apply to international students).
Step 5
Shortly after your interview you will be sent a letter offering you either: A conditional offer of a place at Loughborough College stating the exam results you need in order to qualify for entry onto the course you have applied for. An unconditional offer of a place at Loughborough College. If you are not offered a place, you will be advised who to contact to discuss your options.

Where Do I Begin?
The answer to this question might depend on what interests you, what experience you have, what you intend to do afterwards along with which types of study suit you best. Apprenticeships
The College, through Loughborough College Training, provides apprenticeships to meet the needs of local people and employers. A range of local employers have used programmes offered by the College to recruit and train skilled, key employees. Some apprentices who achieve their full framework move into supervisory or technical positions, in their respective companies. Loughborough College Training offers Apprenticeships (Level 2) and Advanced Apprenticeships (Level 3) in a wide range of occupations. NVQ Level 2 and 3 is offered where there is no Apprenticeship framework. Level 2 Apprenticeships range from one to two years and Advanced Apprenticeships range from two to four years in duration. Apprenticeships are offered on employed and non-employed status. Job search guidance is offered at interview as well as assistance in finding work or placement. Training is carried out in the workplace and at College (usually day release). Each apprentice has a Training Officer who will assist them throughout their apprenticeship. See the Apprenticeships section for more details of the type of occupations we currently offer.

These qualifications may be studied parttime or as part of other programmes of study. They are designed to provide an effective base for further study or for progression into work that is supported with training. At Loughborough College, GCSEs are normally completed within one year. We offer English, Maths, and Human Biology at this level.
Qualifications
The National Qualifications Framework (NQF) is built around the concept of a unitised curriculum. This offers: Extensive flexibility to put together a tailored programme. A wide breadth of qualifications. A real opportunity to study academic and vocational qualifications alongside one another. Separate certification of Key Skills. Equal weighting of academic and vocational qualifications.
Level 6
Honours Degree
A-Level
A typical A-Level programme will include three or four AS-Level subjects in the first year. Usually three of these subjects will be taken on to the full A-Level in the second year. For those re-sitting, we may be able to offer some A-Level subjects which can be taken in one year.

Foundation Degree
Foundation degrees are two year qualifications which can lead on to the final year of an honours degree or into employment.
HNC
HNCs are available for part-time study and are normally considered equivalent to the first year of a degree. The College's part-time guide and HE Prospectus give further details.

Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships offer exciting career opportunities in a wide range of occupations at Level 2 and 3. Loughborough College Training has excellent links with industry and commerce to ensure job opportunities are maximised. Off the job training is carried out at College (usually Loughborough College) using modern equipment and dedicated qualified staff.

New Directions
This flexible new course is for adults who wish to take the first step to improve their skills and gain valuable qualifications. The course will equip you with the essential skills to progress into education or work. You can choose from a range of options including English, Maths, IT, Business Administration and Customer Care. Depending on your personal needs you will have a tailormade programme which could range from a few hours study per week to a full-time course. By the end of this course you will be ready for the world of work or ready to enter further education at a higher level.
Fresh Start
This course runs for three and a half hours per week for six weeks. It is designed to help you make the right choices for your future. If you are unsure of your direction, then you will be given advice and guidance in a supportive setting with a group of people in a similar situation to yourself. By the end of this course you will have set yourself some aims and goals relating to the world of further study or the world of work.

of your course will depend on the degree you hope to enter and your experience. Our specialised team can help you design a course that meets your needs. You will have the opportunity to take English and Maths and these subjects may be mandatory for certain progression routes. You will also get the chance to improve your Key Skills such as Application of Number and IT, if required. You may decide to study for other qualifications offered by the College alongside your Access programme to support your individual goals and objectives. How Are They Assessed? Each unit of study is assessed separately. A variety of methods are used including essays, practical work, oral presentations, tests and examinations, performance, and coursework (compositions and projects). You will gain credits and certification for each unit you complete successfully. The Access to HE Certificate, recognised by QAA, is awarded on successful completion of your whole programme. What Next? Go on to the higher education course of your choice, or begin a new career.
Access to HE Humanities
A specialist programme may be built up from a range of subjects including Sociology, Psychology, Social/Local History, English Language, English Literature, Education Studies, and Human Biology. The course provides an established route to a variety of degree courses.
Access to HE Music
A modular course designed to prepare you for entry into university. This course is tailored around your needs and can include: Composition, Performance, Music Technology, Sound Engineering, Music Business or History of Music. You will also receive support with your theory and aural perception. The layout

Case Study
Jason Dormer studied A-Levels in Business Studies, Sociology and Photography and is now at university studying Media. Whilst at College he took advantage of the student union's impressive media suite, broadcasting a regular radio show on LCR 1350AM. He hopes the experience will lead to further work in the media. In addition to the subjects chosen from the grid, students may study AS General Studies or AS Critical Thinking in year one. An enrichment programme will also be available, including trips, music, and sports activities.

A minimum 80% attendance is required for all students. If, through illness or unforeseen circumstances, lessons are missed, arrangements can be made to attend additional classes to ensure nothing is missed. Special Features A work placement is planned during the spring term. Skills week giving the chance to gain additional skills and training from external companies. Health farm week to gain valuable experience in running a commercial salon. What Next? The natural progression for most students is to study at Level 3, however some students wish to go straight into employment. We offer many complementary courses to further your career prospects.

Complementary Medicine
Is This Course For Me? If you are interested in the field of complementary medicine, this course will give you an insight into alternative healthcare and in providing a caring and professional service to a wide range of clients. What Are The Entry Requirements? Grade C GCSE or equivalent. The course is very intensive so a commitment to home study is essential, as is a caring and enthusiastic approach to treating people. Minimum age 18. What Will I Be Doing? A provisional timetable will be given to you at interview. The total hours will be sixteen. Students must achieve at least 80% attendance during the course. Practical work is based in the College's well-equipped Elite therapy salons. Anatomy and physiology theory is essential underpinning knowledge to all practical work. Half the course is structured around theory work to give students a full understanding of the therapies. On completion you will receive the following qualifications: VTCT Body Massage Certificate Certificate In Reflexology Indian Head Massage Diploma Diploma in Non-Medical Nutritional Advice Key Skills Level 1, 2 or 3 Level 3 Diploma in Anatomy and Physiology Special Features Talks on industry in tutorials What Next? After successful completion of the first year, students can progress on to do a second year, covering additional complementary subjects. Alternatively you can go into industry and find employment at a range of salons, health spas, hotels and from home or your own premises.

Sports Massage
Is This Course For Me? This course is for anyone interested in providing specialised body treatments for a range of clients. It is aimed at people who are interested in the sports area, who are highly motivated, enthusiastic and wanting to develop a career in massage. What Are The Entry Requirements? Preferably GCSEs or equivalent in English and science at grade C or above. The course is extremely intensive and so a high level of commitment and enthusiasm is required. What Will I Be Doing? A provisional timetable will be given to you at interview. The total hours will be sixteen. Students must achieve at least 80% attendance during the course. Business
A business course will provide the foundation for further study or if you want to find work you will also have a good starting point for gaining your first position. Loughborough College has excellent links with companies and organisations ensuring that the courses are highly relevant to the modern business environment and also providing opportunities for trips, projects and assignments. Throughout the course there is a strong hands-on approach and you will be encouraged to put your new skills and knowledge into practice.

What Will I Be Doing? The course is made up of six units: three core units provide a general foundation and three specialist units introduce you to particular topics in more depth. Vocationally based studies help gain a broad understanding of business together with the development of business related and independent learning skills. What Next? Learners may progress into business related careers such as accounting, administration, customer service, finance, personnel, sales or continue study at Level 3, for example AVCE or A-Level.

This course will equip you with the technical skills, knowledge and understanding to prepare you for a professional career in business or allow you to progress on to higher education. You will: Gain a broad understanding of business, exploring some aspects in depth Have an opportunity to apply learning in a practical way Follow a programme of study that enables progress to both higher education and employment Develop key skills of communication, numeracy and IT - highly valued by employers and universities Gain confidence through developing independent learning skills What Next? Students with the GCE in Applied Business have access to a wide range of career and higher education opportunities, including Foundation Degrees, HNDs and Honours Degrees. The skills you will learn include collecting, recording and analysing data, communicating your findings in a variety of ways and identifying and developing links between different parts of the
subject. These skills are in great demand and are recognised by employers, universities and colleges as being of great value. Many students choose to use their qualification to go straight into employment rather than higher education. Because the GCE in Applied Business helps you develop a range of transferable skills as well as academic knowledge, it can lead to a very wide range of employment opportunities. It can also provide the foundation for further part time study in accounting, marketing, personnel and management.

What Will I Be Doing? This is a one-year course, which will mean attending College on a full-time basis. Is This Course For Me? This course suits international students who have completed their secondary school studies in their own countries and wish to improve their English language and study skills with a view to progressing to a UK university. What Are The Entry Requirements? Level 3 qualifications. You should have graduated from senior school with good results, particularly in Maths. You should also have an IELTS (English Language Testing System) 5.0 for Science and Sports Science and 5.5 for Business or Computing (with a minimum sub-skill score of 5 in writing), or an equivalent qualification. What Will I Be Doing? You will divide your time between English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and options of Business & Maths, Business & Tourism Management, Computing, Science & Maths, and Sports Science. There will also be allocated classroom time for self-study on work as directed by your tutors.
What Next? The programme has advanced standing at Loughborough University, Nottingham Trent University, Leicester University and the University of Portsmouth. Students on the course who are made an offer by these universities will be guaranteed a place on the first year of an appropriate full-time undergraduate programme, providing they reach the required standard (including any subject specific requirements) and have an IELTS score of 6.5. It is possible to progress from Foundation Science to a business related degree, and some universities prefer this route, as their degree programmes assume no prior knowledge of business.
What Are The Entry Requirements? There are no formal entry requirements, but some previous knowledge of English is required. What Will I Be Doing? Mire Feeley has been studying music with Loughborough College for the last four years. The classes are in the daytime, allowing her to fit lessons around her childcare. Currently Mire has one-to-one singing and aural teaching and joins a mixed class for theory lessons. She sings a wide range of music, from baroque to classical, romantic, modern and folk. 'The courses give me an escape from my home life and help keep my brain active. I enjoy the classes - it gives me a buzz to get work done and we can study at our own pace with tutors guiding us. I also performed in the end of year concert at the College, which was fun. We have to pass exams and meet certain targets, but I feel the benefit of being here, it's rejuvenating.'

What Next? Students can progress on to the National Diploma course as a second year student after successful completion of the BTEC National Award qualification. After completing this course students could then work in sports centres, fitness clubs, leisure centres, outdoor activity centres, or uniformed services. BTEC National Diploma in Sport (Development & Fitness / Performance & Excellence)
Is This Course For Me? The National Diploma in Sports Studies is a vocational three A-Level equivalent course, with a large practical component. Confidence, communication skills and organising ability are developed and you are given the opportunity to improve your personal sports performance and fitness level. What Are The Entry Requirements? Four GCSEs at grade C or above, including English, a First Diploma or GNVQ Intermediate course (merit grade). Learners who have completed a BTEC National Award in Sport may progress directly onto year two of the course. All successful applicants require a grade C in GCSE English Language for this course. What Will I Be Doing? The specialist units enable students to study particular areas in depth and spcialise in one of two pathways: Performance and Excellence - looking at developing sports skills in a specific area e.g. football and basketball Development and Fitness - looking at training, coaching and fitness testing. Watersports at Holme Pierrepoint National Watersports Centre Orienteering Visiting speakers, e.g. international athletes, wheelchair basketball athletes and sports therapists The first year residential is an outdoor pursuits course. All students will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to a career in a uniformed service and a basic level of fitness. Mature applicants will be considered on individual merit. What Will I Be Doing? Students will study a range of practical and theory units based around the Uniformed Services and their work including preparing yourself both mentally and physically for a rewarding career. The course enables you to develop your confidence and interpersonal skills with a strong emphasis on developing personal discipline through individual and team activities. Students will be required to wear a uniform when in College and whilst on external visits to Public Service organisations. Special Features Opportunity to visit a variety of Public Service organisations and gain knowledge of the industry from visiting guest speakers. Residentials at Public Service establishments and expedition weekends. Integrated courses include First Aid and the Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership.
Some students may wish to take extra GCSE qualifications. Optional sport coaching awards are available. What Next? BTEC National Award in Public Services (Uniformed)
Is This Course For Me? A Level 3 course that provides an excellent opportunity to make an informed choice about a career in a Uniformed Service that include; the Police, Fire and Ambulance Services, Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Royal Air Force, Prison Service, Security Organisations, HM Customs and Excise, Merchant Navy. This course is particularly relevant for students considering a career in the uniformed services at officer level and/or students who want to progress onto HND or university degree courses. There is also opportunity to go onto the National Diploma or National Certificate in Public Services (Uniformed). What Are The Entry Requirements?
