Functions & Their Graphs

By: Ms. A

Lets Think
Before

moving onto the next slide, what do you think a function is? What does a function look like? Why do you think graphs are important? Can you come up with an example of a function?

Representing Relations & Functions

Relation:

mapping, paring, of input values with output values Domain: set of input values Range: set of output values Function: exactly one output for each input

If at least 1 output has more than 1 input then it is NOT a Function!

Lets Identify Functions!

This is a Function:
Input -4 1 2 Output 4 1

Because the each input has exactly 1 output. The domain consists of -4, 1, & 2, and the range consists of 4 and 1

Lets Identify Functions!

This is NOT a Function:
Input -4 1 3 Output 4 -3 1 3

Because the input 1 has two outputs: -3 & 1. The domain consists of -4, 1, and 3, and the range consists of 4, -3, 1, and 3.

Now its Your Turn!

Is this relation a Function? Why or why not?
Input -2 Output 2

1
-7 5

Identify the domain and range.

Representation
Relations

pairs

can be represented by ordered

What do you think ordered pairs are?

Ordered The

pairs are in the form of (x,y)

horizontal value, x, comes first then the vertical value, y, come second.

Graph a Relation
Coordinate

plane

Divided into 4 sections or quadrants Origin: axes intersect at a point Plot ordered pairs on here
What do you think the values are of ordered pairs in each quadrant?

Vertical Line Test

A

relation is a function if and only if no vertical line intersects the graph of the relation at more than one point

Graphing Functions and the Vertical Line Test

Graphing Functions
Functions

can be represented by an equation with 2 variables. Such as: y=3x+5

Independent

Variable: input variable x Dependent Variable: output variable, y, depends on value of input variable

Graphing Functions
You

can also write it in function notation: f(x)=3x+5

f(x)

is read as: the value of f at x Another name for y

Graphing Functions
Graph

the linear function y=x+2

1. start by making a table of values

Choose x (Input) Evaluate y (Output)

2. Plot points. 3. Draw a line connecting the points.

Basic Functions
Here

are 6 common functions:

= = = = =

You will explore the graphs of these common functions in Lesson 2.
