ABSTRACT
Skinplex is the key to Ambient Intelligence and covers two basic functions: Active communication of data over the skin Passive sensing the change of an electrical field by man

Skinplex is an enabling technology of future near field man-machine communication. A base technology providing new possibilities in all areas of daily life. It can both, support existing applications and offer solutions for new products. An ID-Tag or badge which is carried at or near the body serves as identification media. Already during the approach the ID-code can be evaluated. The door lock is activated if the person touches the handle.

The reading distance higher then with RFID, depending on the capacitive area of the Skinplex receiver. No expensive and complicated antenna and strong power supplies. A TouchPanel recognizes the person and the Skinplex transmitter over the capacitive near-field. It reads the information already ahead of being touched. Skinplex detects approach and touch of humans. This sensor function can be used for jamming protection or as a switch. The sensor ability and communication can be combined.

CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION

Skinplex is a technology that allows for active (wireless) data communication using the skin as a transmitter. It can also passively detect touch or near touch situations. Thus it falls into the domain of Near Field Communication (NFC) and it can be used in the creation of a Personal Area Network (PAN) or Body Area Network (BAN). Its main claims to fame are that is has a larger range than RFID and that the whole body can be used as transmitter making at an effective tool in personal identification.

The passive Skinplex system is also very interesting for energy efficiency purposes in many appliances as it can automatically shut them down as soon as the user has let go (for instance in a wireless computer mouse or advanced TV remote). Also it is a more reliable sensor technology as it harder to activate accidentally as can happen with IR proximity sensors or accelerometers.

CHAPTER 2 SKINPLEX ACCESS CONTROL

Fig 2.1: Illustration of access control

2.1 WORKING

Skinplex Technology envisions a world where electronic devices can be controlled simply and effectively using reliable grip and proximity detection, and using gestures with just the wave of your hand. Skins resistance includes a real part and an imaginary part, for our data transfer we use a frequency with which the imaginary part disappears. Transmissions operate at 195 kHz. Range advantage" over RFID and NFC (50 cm).

A Touch-Panel recognizes the person and the Skinplex transmitter over the capacitive near-field. It reads the information already ahead of being touched.

Skinplex detects approach and touch of humans. This sensor function can be used for jamming protection or as a switch. The sensor ability and communication can be combined.

2.2. Detection:

All you need to use Skinplex as a human sensor is a Skinplex receiver and a capacitive area. The approach or touch can quantitatively and qualitatively be registered and processed. Skinplex converts these elementary human actions in practical applications: Jamming Protection and Anti-Trapping Burglar Alarm Intelligent Switches Human Sensor

2.3. Communication:

For the next step, the communication, you need a Skinplex transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter has a unique ID, just like a RFID-transponder.

Fig. 2.2: Transmission of Electric Field The data is transmitted if you approach or touch a Skinplex receiver or the connected capacitive area. The Skinplex Technology can be used in automotive, automation, telecommunication, security and data-collection. Skinplex provides new solutions and products : Security Management and Access Control Data-Collection Ambient Intelligence Operator Authentication

CHAPTER 3 WORKING PRINCIPLES

In short: Skinplex uses a small device that is in (near) contact with the skin transmits a signal over the whole surface of the users body.

Fig.3.1: Sensing using skinplex

This signal can be read by a touch panel (the communication with the on body device is already established before touch occurs) and can control a broad range of functions within the device that has the touch panel.

The touch panel uses alternating electrical fields which change (increase) when the electric field of the human body is introduced into the system.

The device that is in near contact with the skin can influence the electric field of the human body in such a way that it can be used as a data transmitter.

The input of the system is therefore an electrical field and the output is an electrical signal which can be interpreted and processed by a computer.

Fig.4.2: Internal arrangement of electrodes

A sensor device is provided, with a first electrode structure comprising a transmitting electrode(SE), a compensation electrode(KE) and reception electrode(EE) and with a second electrode structure comprisings a number of field sensing electrodes(FE). The first and second electrode structure are coupled with an evaluating device(A). The evaluating device comprises signal generator(g) for supplying the transmitting electrode and compensation electrode with an alternating electrical signal (WS1,WS2). The electrodes are arranged in relation to each other in such a way that a first alternating electrical field emmited at the transmitting electrode may be coupled into the reception electrode and into at least one of the field sensing electrodes and a second alternating

CONCLUSION
How well the Skinplex technology works in practice remains to be seen The usual factors of performance, price, device compatibility, and ergonomics still need to be fleshed out. The technology itself is intriguing, and may have even more applications we can't envision yet. There is no clue on when skinplex might hit the market. It has been reported this may not appear in commercial devices for at least 2 years. Skinplex is a very interesting technology. But its fate will ultimately depend on how committed Microsoft is to making it a commercial reality and how soon.
