1 1 Introduction to Additon
Addition means we put 2 things together to make more.
Addition is a lot like counting.
Let me show you what I mean. Lets say you have 2 cookies on your plate.
Then your Mom puts 2 more cookies on your plate. Now, how many cookies do you have? How many cookies do you have?
Right! Two cookies together with another 2 cookies makes 4 cookies. We can easily count them. Count with me, ready? 1, 2, 3, 4. We now have 4 cookies. Great job!
In math, there is a certain way we write this. First, the symbol we use for addition is a plus sign.

Symbol for addition:
Then when we have the answer, we say equal to. Answer:
We can write our problem using the plus sign and equal sign along with our numbers. So, 2 cookies together with 2 cookies makes 4 cookies
can be written as 2 cookies + 2 cookies = 4 cookies, or
2 + 2 = 4.
Addition using counting:

We can use counting to add two numbers together. Lets add 2 yellow blocks to 3 blue blocks by counting them.
First, we count the yellow blocks, 1, 2. Then continue counting the blue blocks. 3, 4, 5. So, 2 + 3 = 5.

Excellent! We need to add 3 blue blocks and 2 yellow blocks. Lets count them together. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. So, 3 + 2 = 5. Great job!

1 3 Addition Using an Additon Table

An addition table can help you find answers to simple addition problems. It is very important that you memorize all your addition facts, if you havent already, since you will use them a lot in math.
Now let me show you how to add using an addition table. Lets solve 2 + 3.
First, take your pointer finger on your right hand and go across the pink line and find the number 2. Then, take your pointer finger on your left hand and go down the blue line and find the number 3. Then, move both of your fingers until they meet on the same number. You should stop on the number 5. So, 2 + 3 = 5. Its that easy. Lets try another problem. What is 3 + 4?

1 4 Additon Using Regrouping

There are many times we need to add numbers that are larger than just 1 digit. If you notice, the number 10 is the largest number on our addition chart.
What if we needed to find the answer to 18 + 6?

Well, this is when we can use a strategy called regrouping. First, we have to rewrite the problem like this: 18 + 6.

Notice that we stack one number on top of the other, lining up the ones place. This is very important, be sure the numbers on the far right are lined up. Now, we add the numbers 8 and 6 in the ones place first. This is when you can use the addition table. What is 8 + 6?

Very good, 8 + 6 = 14. So, we have 14 ones. Lets plug this into my handy place value chart.
Now, we move on to the next column, the tens place. There is only one number, 1. So, how many tens do we have?
18 + 6
Right, we have 1 ten. Lets put this in our chart.
Now we can regroup. This means we can trade up any tens that we have in our columns. Lets start in our ones column. Here we have a 1 for the tens digit, which means there are 10 ones. We can trade up those 10 ones for 1 ten.

Now we have new numbers in our columns. The ones column lost 10 ones, making only 4 ones left. The tens column gained 1 group of 10, making 2 tens.
So now we have the number 24. So, we used regrouping to find 18 + 6 = 24.

What is 27 + 6?

So, first we line up line up the ones place. Then what do we do? Right, we add the numbers 7 and 6 in the ones place. This is when you can use the addition table. What is 7 + 6?

Very good, 7 + 6 = 13. So, we have 13 ones. Lets plug this into my handy pl ace value chart.
Now, we move on to the next column, the tens place.

There is only one number, 2. So, how many tens do we have? Right, we have 2 tens. Lets put this in our chart.
Now we can regroup, which means we trade up any tens we have in our columns. Lets start in our ones column. Here we have a 1 for the tens digit, which means there are 10 ones. We can trade up those 10 ones for 1 ten.
Now we have new numbers in our columns. The ones column lost 10 ones, maki ng only 3 ones left. The tens column gained 1 group of 10, making 3 tens.

So what number did we end up with? Right, we now have the number 33. So, we used regrouping to find 27 + 6 = 33.

1 5 Find 10 More
Now lets practice adding 10 more to any number using mental math. Mental math means we picture the problem in our heads and then solve it in our heads.
What do you think 10 more means?
Excellent! 10 more means we add 10.
So, 10 more than 1 means 10 + 1.
Now picture 10 + 1 in your head and think about how we know that 10 + 1 is equal to the next number, which is 11. Thats how you solve a problem using mental math, great job!
Lets try another. Ready? What is 10 more than 4?
Excellent job! 10 more than 4 means 10 + 4, which you pictured in your head. You might have then counted up from 10 four times and got 14. Like this, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14.
You can also stack the numbers and add them in your head. 0 + 4 = 4 and 1 plus nothing is 1, so you get 14. If you picture this way in your head, be sure not to mix up the ones and tens places.

Lets try another problem using this strategy. What is 10 more than 3?
Right! 10 more than 3 means 10 + 3.
So stack the numbers and add them in your head. 0 + 3 = 3 and 1 plus nothing is 1, which is 13. You are doing great!
What is 10 more than 9?
So stack the numbers and add them in your head. 0 + 9 = 9 and 1 plus nothing is 1, which is 19. Keep it up!
What is 10 more than 10?
Stack the numbers and add them in your head. 0 + 0 = 0 and 1 plus 1 is 2, which is 20.

Another way to solve this problem in your head is to know than when adding 10 more, this means the tens place of the other number is increased by 1.
For example, what is 10 more than 23?
If we understand that we just need to add 1 to the tens place, then 2 + 1 is 3, so we have 33.
Lets check this by stacking the numbers and adding, 3 + 0 = 3 and 2 + 1 = 3. We have 33, the same number! So, now you know a quicker way to find 10 more.
Lets try two more using the quick way. What is 10 more than 45?
Excellent job! If we add 1 to the tens place, then 4 + 1 is 5, which means 10 more than 45 is 55.

Last one. What is 10 more than 76?
Excellent job! If we add 1 to the tens place, then 7 + 1 is 8, which means 10 mo re than 76 is 86.

1 6 Commutative Property of Additon

We have learned that addition means we bring two numbers together to make a new number. For example, when we add 2 blocks to 3 blocks we get 5 blocks.
This is written as 2 + 3 = 5.
What happens when we switch the 2 and 3 around?
Lets count the blocks to see if we get a different answer. Count them with me. Ready? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. We got the same answer!
So, 2 + 3 = 5 and 3 + 2 = 5.
No matter which way we add the numbers, they still equal 5. Lets try another problem.

1 7 Associative Property of Additon

We have learned that addition means we bring two numbers together to make a new number, like 3 + 5 = 8.
and these two numbers will have the same answer even if they are switched around. 3 + 5 = 8 and 5 + 3 = 8.
But what if we have more than two numbers to add? Well, that is where we can use the associative property of addition. The associative property of addition is much like the commutative property of addition; however, the associative property of addition has more than two numbers.
The associative property of addition has more than two numbers.

It states that if I have three numbers to add, I will get the same answer if I added the first two numbers and then the third number as if I added the last two numbers and then added the first number. Let me show you what I mean. What is 3 + 5 + 5?
Right! 3 + 5 + 5 = 13. We can count the faces to find the answer. Ready? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13. Great job!

We have learned that the order we add these numbers do not change the answer. So, 5 + 3 + 5 and 5 + 5 + 3 also equals 13.
Since we know we can add the numbers in any order, we can add the second two numbers first because we know that 5 + 5 makes 10. Then it is easier to add 3 + 10, which is 13.
What is 2 + 4 + 6?
Fabulous! 2 + 4 + 6 = 12. We can count the hearts to find the answer. Ready? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. Great job!

1 8 Additive Identity Property of Additon

Additive Identity Property of Addition states that anytime we add a 0 to a number, the number stays the same. Additive Identity Property of Addition means, Any Number + 0 = The Original Number The number DOES NOT change when you add 0 to it. In math, any time we add zero to a number, the number still stays the same. For example, we have 4 cookies and we add 0 cookies, so how many cookies do we have in all?
Excellent! We still have 4 cookies. 4 + 0 = 4.
No matter how we add 0 and 4, it will always be 4. So, 0 cookies plus 4 cookies equals 4 cookies, too. 0 + 4 = 4.

Sometimes, one of the numbers is missing and we have to figure out what number it is. For example, 7 + 3 = some missing number. Do you know the missing number?
Excellent! The missing number is 10, 7 + 3 = 10.
