Mental Health and Guidance

MENTAL HEALTH It is the state of good adjustment with a subjective state of well-being, zest for living and the feeling that one is exercising his talents and abilities. Characteristics of a Mentally Healthy Person Adjusted A mentally-healthy person is not unduly distressed by conflicts - not that he has no conflicts. Productive- He has spontaneity in work and play. He uses his potentials to the full. Zest for living- He has a high energy level and can do hard work with enthusiasm. He is not easily discouraged. Sensitive- He is sensitive of his own needs, motives, potentials, and does not make demands on others. He is able to give and receive.

Factors Affecting Mental Health Hereditary Factors Heredity encompasses the physical qualities and talents with which we are born. It is the sum total of the qualities, characteristics, and traits which have been transmitted from generation to generation. Physical Factors Factors that pertain about the general condition of the body of an individual. Socio-cultural factors Our attitudes and behavior patterns can be attributed to our surroundings as well as the people around us such as the kind of home and community we lived, the family circle, cultural background and peer groups. GUIDANCE Guidance is a program through which a guide or a trained personnel gives directions and information to a person about how to do something or go about something to enlighten and to educate him. It involves personal help given by someone that focuses on the individual and not the problem. It is an organized service given to an individual in a school setting.

Guidance Services Individual Inventory Service designed to gather all reliable data, information, and records, and to assemble and compile these materials for their functional use. Information Service aims to provide a continuous source of information needed in evaluating occupational, educational, and socio economic information as well as providing facts for personal and social adjustments. Counseling Service a one on one, face to face confrontation between a counselor and an individual who is undergoing a problem and needs professional help to overcome it. It is considered as the heart of the guidance program. Placement Service helps the pupil\student secure the most effective relationship to a job or to the next step in his educational or personal program. Follow-Up Service an integral part of guidance services. It is concerned with what happens to pupils\students while in school or after they have left school.
