How did you attract/address your audience?

To attract my audience, I used colour schemes and typography typical of a rock magazine to make the genre clear when the magazine is on a shelf. This was reflected in my audience feedback for my first drafts who commented on

the good house style and gave positive feedback on the font used.

A majority of people (30%) reported attending concerts every few months, and only 20% of all respondents replied they never attended gigs. Gig listings was also the second most favoured article in my survey. Because of this, I used the bottom of the cover to advertise concert reviews and gig listings, as well as using space on the left third to advertise music festivals. This is continued through to the contents page due to the section in the contents titled LIVE.

I also included articles advertising the bands named as favourites that were suitable for the genre for example naming Of Mice & Mens new album as one being reviewed to attract fans of theirs. This article was used as a skyline because album reviews was listed as third most popular article and by seeing it listed across the top of a magazine this could attract readers.

The target audience for my magazine is from 15-18. As teenagers often look for advice from celebrities I included VIC FUENTES GIVES YOU ADVICE! in the left third. As well as this, I included articles that would not be suitable for younger readers, talking about tattoos and the law on the cover, and alcohol, swearing and stripper on the double page spread.

Also because of the age of the audience I made the magazine affordable feedback showed 55% of people would pay between 2.01 and 3 for a weekly music magazine so I made the price of the magazine 2.40, especially as young people do not often have much money. When I had the class feedback on my drafts, they commented on how clear and organised the page was it was easy to find articles. This way the reader can easily see all the content of the magazine without having to flick through the whole thing. However, they commented on the space on the left third, and how it looked empty as such for second and final draft of my front cover I worked on making this less empty while still keeping the page organised and easy to read. Also by having more articles in the left third it gives the impression that the magazine has a lot of content and so is worth buying. Using EXTRAS on the contents page also conveys this.

Furthermore, as the magazine is aimed at both males and females, to prevent my magazine looking too androcentric I used a female model to pose on front. Whereas the masculine colours attract males, females would buy the magazine as they see a woman role model on the front of their magazine. The use of the female as the cover model also balances out the lack of female fronted bands or other female images throughout the magazine.

To attract readers, I also used strong, emotive language. This includes BRAND NEW INTERVIEWS, FEATURES and EXCLUSIVE LOOK AT THE NEW BAND which implies important, exciting new information.

Furthermore, I used inclusive language; YOUR LOCAL CONCERT VENUE; GIVES YOU ADVICE; ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW. I also used direct gaze on my models pose in the front cover and contents page images.

This makes the reader feel as if they are specifically being addressed and that the magazine was tailored to them.
