BN2225 PORTFOLIO ENTRY

Background In Week 2 of University I had to go to Saudi Arabia urgently due to religious circumstances. This would prevent me working with the team on campus. As well as this by going away early during the term the negative consequence of leaving a bad impression on the rest of the team members was possible. By leaving the team early in the module the group may have felt that they have to do extra work thus becoming demotivated, as a result affecting performance. Action(s) Taken In order to solve the issues which could arise from my travel to Saudi Arabia. I had asked questions from the Module Leader (Paul Bocij). Paul had said that working remotely would not be a problem, however arrangements would need to be made. Therefore I researched various methods of communication, which would allow the team to work together whilst I was away. From my research I found that a variety of communication tools are available to carry out effective communication from abroad. The main application tool I decided to use was Whatsapp Messenger. The benefits this application offers, these include the ability to attach files to send, as well as instant messaging based my selection. My decision is also supported by Yeboah & Ewur (2014) With the social media network like Whatsapp, an individual can initiate and build strong business partnership in any part of the world without meeting that individual in person. Whatsapp is mainly a mobile phone application therefore as the group had access to their phones most of the time they also have access to the application. Thus the group agreed in Week 1 the best application from the numerous available was Whatsapp Messenger. Outcome As a result of using Whatsapp messenger the group was able to communicate effectively whilst I was abroad. The application supported the use of other communication tools such as electronic mail. By using Whatsapp instant notifications could be sent by the group regarding the work carried out. As I was abroad I always had my phone with me thus access to Whatsapp. This allowed the group to contact me at all times without any delayed responses. This was beneficial as it allowed instant decisions to be made by the group regarding various aspects of the work being carried out.

By implementing communication tools to carry out teamwork whilst I was abroad the group was able to carry out work easily and efficiently. The evidence, which shows the effectiveness of the teamwork, is that no conflicts have been caused whilst working on the module. As well as this when I had returned in week 5 we had no problems preparing for our presentation in week 7. Subsequently, performing a coherent presentation achieving 73%.
Learning I have learned the importance of the use of communication tools when completing team related tasks. In order to improve the communication within a team it is vital the team makes effective use of the various methods of communication, which are available. As well as this, I have learnt that various communication methods have their own benefits depending on the context of the situation and the age range of the users. Further Development For the future I will continue to research into the variety of communication tools available. As I intend to find an application which will allow transfer of data with a high memory capacity. This is because Whatsapp, which we are currently using, only allows file transfer of certain sized files. Consequently an application with better facilities to transfer data will make editing and transferring large documents easier between the team. References
