Tommy Dee History of Filipino Rock

There are many musical genres in the Philippines, some of which have American origins, as we were under their culture. For this paper, I will be focusing on the active and event-filled Filipino Rock genre, which has brought many great tunes to our ears. The origins of our Pinoy Rock can be traced back to the early 1960s, when electric instruments were just being introduced and being used in new music. Instrumental American and British bands, such as The Shadows, became popular, and then the Filipino instrumental bands came afterwards, bands like The Deltas, RJ & the Riots, and more were being introduced to Filipino culture. Then, in 1963, we were hit by the British Invasion, which brought bands like The Beatles, to western culture. They sounded like a good band, with lots of recognisable sounds in music, even up until today. As the Philippines was influenced by western culture, despite being in the eastern part of the world, they changed the way we Filipinos make music. Later in the decade, then came the Woodstock Era, with bands like Ten Years After, Iron Butterfly, Led Zeppelin, Joe Cocker, and more. This influenced us even more to the point that in the 70s, a band named Hotdog, mixed the previous two genres together. With the song Manila, it generated a new type of sound in the Philippines, which was known as Manila Sound. Manila Sound used more of the Tagalog language, and it was known for its catchy beat, and its use of instruments. However, Manila Sound wouldnt last forever. In 1978, Freddie Agular, with his debut single, Anak, was able to completely revolutionize the fledging music industry in the Philippines. It has the sounds of guitars, and a string melody, with glockenspiels and various flutes for the high notes. Being within the Marcos era, it had subtle references to rebellion, which would happen a few years later. Then, In the 1970s, the Juan De La Cruz Band became one of the first popular Filipino rock bands, which was also the Golden Age of Filipino

Rock. They are known as the grandfathers of Filipino Rock, and they played a big role in the creation of Filipino Rock. That era would be known as the Classic Era of Pinoy Rock. Now, on to the 1980s. As Marcos was dominating, we were rebelling in EDSA. Rock music, such as Aguilar's Bayan Ko, by Freddie Agular, was one of the many themes of our rebellion at EDSA. Because of this, it popularized the concept of rock music, and as a result, many artists, such as Betrayed, G.I. & the Idiots, The Jerks, Private Stock, Urban Bandits, and more, followed, and started the Pinoy Rock sensation. Rock music has a lot of guitars and drums in them, which bring a sense of power to the songs. They would usually be loud and fast paced, and the singers would belt their voices as loud as they can. Then, as the years went by, Pinoy rock music continued to evolve, as they were influenced by American pop culture, which went from Hip-Hop, to rap, to other genres.
