MESSAGE FROM
THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
I’m thrilled to present you with the inaugural issue of the Prosserman JCC program guide. As you leaf
through this guide, I am sure you’ll be amazed at the breadth and diversity of our programming. These
programs reflect the dynamism of our new JCC, a place for the community to learn, be engaged, have fun
and interact with one another.
The Prosserman JCC celebrates the diversity of Jewish life in Toronto. A vibrant community such as ours –
one that is continually growing and changing – needs vibrant institutions within which to fully express it-
self. That will now be possible, thanks to the generosity of the Prosserman Family, Honey and Barry Sher-
man, the Gales Family, Al and Malka Green, and others. Thanks must also be extended to the Sherman
Campus construction committee, along with developers Peter Cohen and Peter Menkes, for their incredi-
ble vision and the time and energy they devoted to this project.
Built to provide a venue in which to engage meaningfully in Jewish and community life, the Prosserman JCC is
intended to serve both surrounding neighbourhoods as well as communities throughout the Greater Toronto
Area. When you visit the new JCC, you will no doubt be struck by the beautiful structure in which it is housed.
But while the Prosserman JCC exists within a striking new building – the Donald Gales Family Pavilion – it will
be so much more than a building. The Prosserman JCC is only as good as the community that animates it. Our
brand new daycare and preschool will come to life each day with the sounds of your children playing, laughing
and singing Hebrew songs. Our culinary arts studio will be filled with delicious smells when you take part in a
new and interesting cooking course. And our fitness centre will be abuzz when you and your friends drop by
to try out one of our many classes or pump some iron using one of our many new machines. And there’s more:
the Prosserman JCC is coming to your community, providing activities where you live, such as sports leagues,
community engagement projects, interesting lectures and so much more.
As we open a new chapter within the life of the Jewish community in Toronto, we’re extending our hand to
you. It’s only with your enthusiastic participation that the Prosserman JCC will become an epicentre for
Jewish and communal life in our city.
I invite you to join us as we embark on this remarkable journey together.
Yours,
Bryan Keshen
Executive Director, Prosserman JCC

The first five years of a child’s life are often thought to be the most critical. That makes choosing the right
childcare one of the more important decisions a parent has to make. Built with children in mind, the new
Prosserman daycare and preschool was created to allow children maximum self-expression, helping them
reach their full potential while connecting to Jewish traditions in a positive and meaningful way.
Our new facility, the David & Esther Freiman Childhood Education Centre, is more than a bright, open
space in which children learn, play and interact with each other. Designed and built with a Reggio Emilia sen-
sibility – an early childhood education philosophy that emphasizes exploration and discovery in a supportive
environment – the new daycare and preschool enhances each child’s individual learning experience.
But what makes the Prosserman daycare and preschool so special is that we are housed within a JCC,
making the children one generation among the many who come to the Prosserman JCC. As members
of this community, the children have access to all of the JCC’s facilities, providing plenty of stimulation
for budding young minds.
Prosserman daycare and preschool strives to be an inclusive environment, and a focus on inclusiveness
informs both programming content as well as the design of the facility. A new fully accessible outdoor
playground also provides children with an outlet for their boundless energy.
Perhaps most importantly, Prosserman daycare and preschool recognizes that the early years are a
vital time for the entire family. This is what truly sets Prosserman daycare and preschool apart – we
don’t just serve children, we serve families. We recognize that a child’s whole family needs support
during this time. When parents enroll their children in the Prosserman daycare and preschool, they
become part of a warm, supportive and welcoming community that continues well beyond the child’s
time at the centre.
