PART I- READING (Leitura e Compreenso de Texto) 200 p

Read the following text carefully.

The International Space Station (ISS) is a floating laboratory in space that will be in orbit
at an altitude of approximately 400 kilometres above the Earth and will establish a permanent
human presence in space for the next 10 to 15 years.
Astronaut Umberto Guidoni, the first European to be on the ISS and a veteran of two
space missions, explains what it is like living out there.

What is it like living in space?

For a start, you really have to be organised. You cant just put things down, because
there is no down. Anything loose simply floats away. On one occasion, I almost lost an
important computer disk that way. So everything has to be stuck down, usually with duct tape
or velcro not very high technology, but two of the most important inventions used in space!

10

But how do you feel in zero gravity?

To begin with, you have a sensation of floating. You feel like you are in water but without
water. There are all types of strange sensations. You adapt rapidly, but it takes about 24
hours to recover from space nausea. After that, it is fun. Even so, you need a few days before
you can do things efficiently.

15

What about ordinary living? Eating, sleeping, and so on?

Eating is difficult. Mostly you spoon food from a plastic bag carefully! Any sudden
movements and the food will fly and end up stuck to a wall.
How do astronauts spend their day?
The ISS orbits the Earth in 90 minutes, so there is no 24-hour rhythm of day and night that
we on Earth are accustomed to. Yet, astronauts try to maintain an artificial 24-hour rhythm.

20

What about personal hygiene?

Hygiene is of course as important on board the ISS as it is on Earth. For their personal
hygiene, all astronauts have a small kit containing all necessary items: a comb, a pair of
scissors, a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, towels and tissues. The kit is equipped
with velcro so that the astronauts can attach it to the wall; otherwise it could float away when
they are brushing their teeth!
