We experience stress every day, in different forms and in different aspects of our lives. We thought of this therapy to somehow alleviate our own stress and anxiety, then we thought that if we normal people suffer from such, what more our mentally- ill patients? Moreover, most of our patients are complaining that they cannot sleep well because of their crowded, dirty, and noisy environment. That is why we thought of conducting Stress Management--Massage Therapy because it will be a great help to our patients to somehow relieve how theyre feeling physically, mentally, and emotionally. We are all aware that patients confined in an institution like Mariveles Mental Hospital were not given that much of attention because first and foremost, there was overpopulation in the said institution yet there are limited staff and nurses to cater them all. So as student nurses, we have taken the opportunity to conduct this therapy to somehow be able to help patients, even if were only allowed to handle ten of them. Before the therapy, we have observed that they looked like they are not contented with their previous nights sleep but they were quite excited about the therapy. As we explained the therapy, they became more optimistic and more eager to learn how to manage their stresses. During the therapy, we asked them to close their eyes and relax while we were massaging them. When we began massaging them accompanied by an instrumental music, they became more sleepy and calm, some even fell asleep. After massaging them, we asked them to return demonstrate what was done to them. It was overwhelming because they were able to remember the steps and do it to us as well. When we had our post- conference about it, most of them verbalized that they were relaxed and that they were happy and thankful that they have not only been able to relax but that theyve learned something new something they could also use when they are already discharged from the MMH. There are many kinds of therapy that can be conducted in the MMH. This Therapy will benefit the patients, in terms of relaxing, alleviating depression and anxiety. Moreover, we are also able to do the therapy for ourselves and we really felt how effective it was because our bodies were relieved and our stresses were lessened. We as a student nurse can use this in therapeutic terms and it has benefits to us also to our client in terms of reducing anxiety and improving immune system function. And we can counter act the insomnia and negative feelings during our toxic days. Even if we are always tired and sleepless preparing therapies for them, it was worth it, see them smiling, knowing that we were able to help our patients, and it is good that they learned something new from us.
