Getting
Te Job Done
Over the winter months
hundreds of people have
been enjoying skiing and
walking the 50 km long
Slocan Valley Rail Trail.
A dedicated group of vol-
unteers of the Slocan Val-
ley Heritage Trail Society
(SVHTS) have been out
grooming and track-set-
ting the Rail Trail to make
it possible.
Next month the SVHTS
will be looking for com-
munity support at Dot
Day, which is when the
community decides who
can take advantage of
funding through the
Columbia Basin Trust
Community Initiatives
Program (CIP). Tey
are hoping to replace the
seven year-old Ginzu
Groomer and Tracksetter
with a new one for next
winter.
Dot Day takes place in
early April and you must
be a Slocan Valley resi-
dent to participate. To
fnd out more about the
Slocan Valley Rail Trail,
visit their webpage www.

Forsyth And Shine At Te Langham
Te Langham Gallery is proud to present Pat Forsyths:
Corvidae and Virago. Te exhibition is an impressive sam-
pling of a prolifc collection, spanning years of research and
soul-searching. Te show documents the mutability and
magic of specifc birds (corvidae) and the many sides of
femininity; virago is loosely translated from Latin as female
warrior.
Much of the setting for this work is local, as is the fe-
male model that is represented throughout, but the themes
are universal: life and death; black and white; strength and
weakness. Te multi-media and digital aspects of this show
attend the core graphite drawings and altogether create a
comprehensive and inspired artistic experience.
Te Community Gallery will be exhibiting the awe-inspir-
ing work of Argenta sculptor Spring Shine entitled Flow-
stones. Shines work is the result of a 20 year self-study of
materials and methodology, and is a work in progress. It is
an exploration into refning and accentuating the natural
shapes of the stones. Te stone is all locally sourced steatite
and marble, so this show is very much rooted in where we
live.
In addition to the exhibition there will be a naturalist talk
entitled Corvidae of the West Kootenay Brainy, Bold and
Brilliant Birds, by renowned naturalist, wildlife advocate and
author Dick Cannings (sponsored by the Kaslo Area Bird-
ers), Tuesday, April 1, 7 pm at the Langham Teatre. Tickets
are $5 at Sunnyside, Willow Home Gallery, or at the door.
Both exhibits are on display from March 28 May 11.

Farm, Food, Fork Is Growing
Local Food Economy.
A local food initiative is underway in the Kootenay
Boundary region that aims to grow, develop, and unify the
local food economy. Tis is an undertaking of the newly
formed West Kootenay Permaculture Co-op, a Slocan Val-
ley based not-for-proft co-operative working on food sec-
urity measures for the region.
FESTIVAL and FEAST, Saturday April 5,
at Selkirk College, Nelson. Tis full day conference will
feature dozens of inspiring expert speakers from near and
far, the Lexicon of Sustainability art show (a 20 piece in-
fo-graphic photography show), food flms, action fair,
workshops, a Kootenay-made food marketplace, and our
very own grass-FED Talks theatre presentation. A midday
organic local seasonal feast will be served to attendees. Tis
festival will be the largest food conference the region has
ever seen; a true celebration of local food! All proceeds from
the event go into a bursary fund for developing grassroots
initiatives to build our food system.
FORUM and FEAST, Sunday April 6 at the Hume Ho-
tel, Nelson. Tis is the stakeholders event, a strategic solu-
tions based, action-driven facilitated day, aimed at bringing
together the regions experts on food, economy, planning,
education, and logistics. It is open to anyone who works in
food or economy building, but space is limited to 150 people,
so folks who are keen to participate need to buy tickets
ASAP! Te day will feature another delicious, organic, and
local seasonal feast. Participants will have the opportunity to
both pitch a project that needs support and to VOTE WITH
THEIR FORK, on how the cash bursary will be awarded to
projects that address the needs of the community.

Whole School Valentines Art
Extravaganza A Success
Whole School and community volunteers raised over
$3,000 for our Build a Legacy Campaign with the Valen-
tines Art Extravaganza event recently held at the Vallican
Whole Community Centre. A special thanks goes to the
many local artists who so graciously donated their fne art
works for the art auctions. Moe Lyons did a fabulous job
as the auctioneer and may have found a new calling in life.
A big thank you also to the entertainers who graced us
with their talents. Proceeds from this event put the grand
total for the Build a Legacy Campaign at just over $30,000
of our $50,000 goal.
Students at the Whole School also raised donations for
the Slocan Valley Food Bank this year as part of their an-
nual Generosity Project. Two huge Tupperware hampers
and $121 were donated just before Christmas to support
families in Slocan and the valley. Te students annual
Generosity Projects are an integral piece of the childrens
education, teaching them to recognize and respond to the
needs of their broader community.
If you are interested in learning more about our al-
ternative educational model, like why we have a WiFi free

Kaslo Concert Society Presents
Te Galena Trio
Te Kaslo Concert Society is pleased to present Te Galena
Trio at St. Andrews United Church, Friday, April 18 at 7:30 pm.
Sharing a contagious passion for the art of chamber music,
the Galena Trio was formed in the summer of 2011 by cellist
Johanne Perron, clarinetist Nicola Everton, and pianist Su-
sanne Ruberg-Gordon while on faculty at the Valhalla Sum-
mer School of Music. All three musicians are busy profes-
sional performers and educators. Te rich repertoire of this
instrument combination has inspired the trio to continue
further exploration with performances in BC and Alberta.
Teir music making is warm, intelligent, passionate,
very pure and honest and that makes them an exception
in todays world. Never a dull moment with the Galena
Trio in whatever repertoire, classical, romantic or mod-
ern. Highly recommended! (Henk Guittart, Founding
member of the Schoenberg Quartet)
Te Kaslo Concert Society acknowledges the generosity
of its sponsors: TeVillage of Kaslo BC Touring Council,
Kaslo & District Community Forest Society, Community
Fund of North Kootenay Lake, Columbia Basin Trust, and
Columbia Power Corporation.
Tickets $22, available at Figments, Kaslo or at the door.

Recycling Benefts Health Care
At Nelson Hospital
Te Regional District of Central Kootenay and the Nel-
son Leafs Recycling Centre are thrilled to donate $7000.00
to the Kootenay Lake Hospital (KLH) Foundation. Tat
amount represents the last six months profts from bev-
erage containers collected at the Nelson Transfer Station.
Since 2010, the program has contributed over $34,000.00 to
the KLH Foundations fundraising eforts.
Te RDCK and the Nelson Leafs Recycling Center have
hosted a beverage container recycling program at the Nel-
son transfer station since 2010. Recycling bins provide
residents with a convenient place to recycle refundable
beverage containers. Not only are we
contributing to improving the services of
our local hospital, but we are also mak-
ing beverage container recycling access-
ible thus keeping recyclable materials out
of the landfll, stated Uli Wolf, General
Manager of Environmental Services for
the RDCK.
All refundable beverage containers and
milk containers (non-refundable) are ac-
cepted in the bins at the Transfer Station
sorting is not required! Residents must place
individual containers into the bins, no bulk
loads are accepted. Large volumes of con-
tainers are accepted at the Recycling Centre
(Bottle Depot) located at 120 Silica Street.
In BC, approximately one billion bev-
erage containers are recycled each year.
Recycling saves energy, reduces green-
house gas emissions, and relieves pres-
sure on non-renewable resources. Good
for the environment and great for our
community. For more information on
RDCK resource recovery programs and
projects please visit www.rdck.bc.ca

Writing For Te Wild 2014
Convergence Writers Weekend
Emerging writers will get a boost at the Convergence
Writers weekend in New Denver in early May. Budding
authors can blossom this spring with the help of mentors
and peers during the third annual Convergence Writers
Weekend at the Hearts Rest Retreat Centre in New Den-
ver, May 2 to 4.
Te theme of this years gathering is Writing for the
Wild, so although participants may be working on fc-
tion, non-fction, or poetry on any topic, the weekends
emphasis will be on how to create sturdier and more ef-
fective writing about wilderness and the efects of human
society on it. Besides workshops that will consider par-
ticipants own writing, the weekend will include a panel,
open to the public, featuring three area writer-activists on
Friday, May 2 at 7:30 pm.
Speaking at the Writing for the Wild panel will be pub-
lisher, author and Jumbo Wild
campaign leader K.L. Kivi; auth-
or and Columbia River watershed
expert Eileen Delehanty Pearkes;
and journalist, public health care
activist and a leader in the fght
against the Northern Gateway
pipeline Keith Wiley. Panelists
will speak on the relation of so-
cial justice to the environmental
movement, overcoming despair,
and fnding joy in the work, in the
context of writing about the wild.
Te panel will be moderated
by Hearts Rest co-founder and
past president of the Slocan Lake
Stewardship Society Terese
DesCamp. Leading the weekend
workshops will be local author/
educators Almeda Glenn Miller,
Verna Relkof and Tom Wayman.
Registration is now open for
this years event, which is limited
to 25 participants. Cost for the
weekend is $275, which includes
all six meals from dinner May 2
to lunch May 4. A limited num-
ber of scholarships are available
for youth between 15 and 30
years of age, and this year, also
for residents of Silverton or New
Denver of any age.
More information, includ-
ing how to register, is available
at www.heartsrest.com/conver-
gence/convergence-writers-re-
treat/ Deadline for registration
is April 11. Support for this years
event has come from the ProVi-

WRITING A CLASSIFIED AD THAT WORKS!
Put yourself in the buyers shoes. What details would you
want to know about an item you were interested in buying?
Include the brand name (manufacturers spend mil-
lions promoting the name and enhancing the image
of their products, so take advantage of it). Would you
rather buy a refrigerator or a Frigidaire?
List the items best features and what makes your
item different from others in the same category. (Re-
member, the more you tell, the clearer picture a po-
tential buyer gets, making it easier for you to sell.)
Take time to research pricing for your article so that
you price it reasonably (overpriced items may not re-
ceive calls).
Include your phone number and the best times to call.
Ask for the sale...one gentleman put BUY THIS CAR! in his
ad and was pleasantly surprised by the response to his ad!

Music, Comedy, Teatre!
As part of the 2013/2014 Performance Series, the
Rossland Council of Arts and Culture presents Lorne
Elliott. We are pleased to have this current tour stop in
Rossland this April! His ever changing one-man con-
cert performance of humorous stories, funny songs and
26 years of professional stage experience has garnered a
loyal audience. He has surprising ways of looking at the
world around him, creating lasting images in the minds
eye with his clever use of the language and his unique
stage presentation. His musical talents are also displayed
through a variety of instruments which he plays in ofen
surprising fashions from J.S. Bach on the electric guitar
to Jimmy Hendrix on the ukulele.
Canadian born Lorne Elliott has performed from New-
foundland to New York City, from Los Angeles to Aus-
tralia and points in between. Lorne started performing
in 1974 as a folk musician in East Coast Canada. At the
same time he kept writing fction as well as songs, mono-
logues and one-liners. Te outcome of such training is a
very special show of comedy and music, totally original,
entertaining, foolish and uplifing.
As well as being a humorist, storyteller and musician,
Lorne is also a playwright. He has received numerous
awards throughout the years for his plays including Best
New Play Award at the Quebec Drama Festival in 1983,
and his frst novel titled Beach Reading has been selected
as a fnalist for the Hugh MacLennan fction prize in the
Quebec Writers Federation 2013 Awards.
Lorne is well-known to the audience for starring in his
own CBC Radio Comedy Series Madly of in All Direc-
tions which went on for 11 seasons. His latest project for
CBC is called Chasing the Big Silly and is currently on tour
with Te Collected Mistakes throughout stages in North
American theatres.

RDCK Budget Keeps Taxation In Check
Te Board of the Regional District of Central Kootenay

ticipates that taxes in those services will show a 0% in-

anticipated increase of less than 1%.
Staf and the board are always looking for ways to de-
liver services to our residents in the most cost-efective

In 2005, the Community Forest granted $60 000
towards a seniors housing project in Kaslo.
Despite the sincere efort of many volunteers
no such housing project has come to fruition.
Although the Community Forest Board supports
this initiative we have made the decision to take
these monies out of reserve. We would like to
see the money put to use. Maggie Winters of
the Kaslo & Area Health Care Select Committee
will present a proposal that we use this money
to help recruit physicians to Kaslo. Other
suggestions and comments are welcome.

Great supply. Ellisons Market, Nelson.
Hello, my name is Nahla. Im a 4 year old, calico beauty who was
brought into the SPCA with my friend Gilly, who has since been
adopted. Im shy with new people but warm up quite nicely. I was
told by the nice people here that I am currently carrying some extra
weight and their hope is that in my new home I can continue to
eat a lower calorie food and be a bit more active so I can continue
shedding those extra pounds and become a lean purring machine!
If you think I would be a good match for you, and we can work
together on this diet they have me on, please drop by the Nelson
SPCA Branch for a visit or call the nice
people here at 250-352-7178.

ScotiaBank MS Walk
Every year, over 40,000 Canadians in more than 160
communities across our country lace up at the MS
Walk to raise vital funds for people living with MS. Tis
family-oriented, community-supported event ofers walk-
ing routes of varying lengths, including a wheelchair-ac-
cessible route and features start/fnish line activities, en-
tertainment, kids activities, team awards and more.
Tis years ScotiaBank MS Walks will be at Trails Gyro
Park on Sunday, April 27, and at Nelsons Lakeside Park
Rotary Shelter on Sunday, May 25.
Registration for this event is free and easy just go to
www.mswalks.ca to register as an individual or a team.
Tere are incentive prizes for diferent fundraising levels,
and every participant receives a T-shirt in recognition of
their support.
Te ScotiaBank MS Walks are a major source of fund-
ing for the work of the MS Society. Te West Kootenay
Chapter supports people in the Kootenay/Boundary re-
gion living with MS and their families with wellness pro-
grams such as yoga, information sessions, and advocacy
services. Te Chapter also contributes funds to research
dedicated to fnd a cure and end MS.

Nelson Hosts BC Tax Forum
Breaks for the one percent, or education, health care
(and more) for the rest of us? It seems no one likes to pay
taxes, yet taxes fnance community services we all need,
such as schools, colleges and universities, environmental
protection and health care.
On Sunday, April 27, 7 to 9 pm, the Nelson (West Koo-
tenay) Chapter of the Council of Canadians will host a BC
Tax Forum at the Nelson United Church, 602 Silica Street.
Seth Klein of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives
will be the keynote speaker. A panel of representatives
from the four major BC political parties have also been
invited to take part.
According to statistics, taxes in BC are the lowest in Can-
ada. Te rationale for low taxes is to boost the economy.
However, this has not happened. In 2010, BC was ffh of
the ten provinces in economic performance, fourth in per-
sonal income, seventh in jobs and ninth in social condi-
tions. BCs tax system has changed signifcantly in the last
15 years. Our tax revenue has fallen relative to the size of
the provincial economy, from 11.6% of GDP in 2000-2001
to 10% in 2011-2012. Tis amounts to $3.5 billion a year.
However, lower tax revenues do afect social conditions.
BC has the highest poverty rate in Canada, the second
highest child-poverty rate and the highest rate of income
inequality. If BC taxed personal income at the average
provincial rate we would have $2.4 billion more annually!
A $10 donation will be requested at the tax forum event,
but no one will be turned away.
Te Council of Canadians is a national social action or-
ganization working for social and environmental justice,
educating and empowering people to hold our govern-

Portrait Exhibit Draws From Te Masters
John Stegman kept himself entertained during his Port
Alberni school days drawing pictures and comic strips.
All that non-studiousness paid of in later life, when Steg-
man picked up his paintbrush in earnest. Stegmans latest
work is now showing at the Nelson Public Library.
Te human form and face has always been of interest
to Stegman. My earliest artistic infuences were the great
graphic artists who drew strips such as Prince Valiant
and Tarzan, he says. Now semi-retired, Stegmans infu-
ences have broadened. He studied the work of the great
artists, travelling to Paris to make drawings of some of
the famous works in the Louvre and Londons National
Gallery, and exploring their painting methods.
Ive been teaching myself the technique of making
monochrome underpaintings, as did painters such as
Rembrandt and Vermeer, he says. It is challenging to
adapt a technique which was originally done in oil to
acrylics.
Te show is comprised of six large portraits and one for-
al work. Te portraits employ subtle use of light and col-
our to create sensitive renderings of the human face. Tat
the artist enjoys fnding nuance in his subjects is clear.
Its a shif for someone with a background in maths and
sciences and a degree in astrophysics, achieved despite
that early classroom inattention. Drawing and painting
give me the opportunity to use the other side of my brain,
Stegman says.
Stegmans work is on display through March and April
at the Nelson Public Library.
