Mill United bounced back from last weeks disappointment at home to Linwood with a hard fought draw, away to Kilsyth on Saturday. Yet again, the match was played in conditions more suited to Windsurfing than football, but this did not stop both sides from trying to put on a decent passing display. The home side kicked the match off into a strong breeze and it was the visitors who eased into their passing rhythm quickest. Mill United had the best of the possession in the opening ten minutes however they had to wait until midway through the first half before their first real attempt on goal. A swift interchanging passing move on the right flank between David Carson and Andrew Murray resulted in Carson swinging in a dangerous right foot cross. The inviting ball was met by Riccardo Scala whose glancing header rose over the top of the bar. This seemed to spark Kilsyth into life and it was the home side that came closest to breaking the deadlock when a 25 yard effort came crashing off the top of the crossbar. The remainder of the half was contested in the middle of the park with neither side having any clear cut chances. However, with just minutes remaining in the half, each side were offered a chance apiece. Jordan Yardley was first to try his luck, shooting wide after the home sides goalkeeper had dropped a Scala corner. And just before the whistle, Chris Tobin saved comfortably from a 25 yard Kilsyth free kick. Both teams went off at half time with the score 0 0. Mill United restarted the match which, most observers would have thought, would continue as a midfield tussle if the first half was anything to go by. This, however, was not to be the case and the second half started a much more open affair. Kilsyth were first to threaten when a 20 yard free kick was saved by Chris Tobin. Moments later, good play down the Mill United left by Mitch Tobin and Kevin Beaton led to Scala being played into the box. As he turned towards goal he was clearly fouled but nothing was given by the referee. The open game was appearing to suit United more and they took full advantage in the 57th minute. They were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal which was well struck by Murray, The keeper, diving low to his right, could only deflect the ball wide of goal, but Beaton had followed in and drilled home the rebound from an acute angle. The goal gave the away side a lift and they created another good opening when Scala played Beaton into space on the left. The left midfielder dribbled into the box beating two defenders on his way to the by line before sending in a dangerous cross which was cleared for a corner. From the resulting corner kick the ball was headed clear of the box and Dillan MacDonald met the clearance only to drive his effort over the bar. This unfortunately proved to be his last involvement due to a hamstring pull and he was replaced by Martin McAteer. McAteer joined Scala up front and Yardley moved to left midfield with Beaton moving in one.

Mill Uniteds lead did not last much longer and with 14 minutes of the 90 remaining Kilsyth drew level. A long throw from the Kilsyth left into Uniteds penalty box was fli cked on at the front post. With several players clambering for the second ball, it was deflected into the path of a Kilsyth attacker who hammered home from close range. After the goal, United made their last 2 changes. Mark Smith replaced the injured Yardley and Mitch Tobin was replaced by Paul Dragsnes who made his long awaited return to action after months on the side-lines. The last action of the match saw the home side reduced to ten men when a Kilsyth player received two yellow cards in quick succession for dissent. Despite the numerical advantage it was too late in the game for United to benefit from this. Both sides tried their best to steal a win in the closing minutes but with each team putting in a great deal of effort, a draw seemed to be a fair result. Mill United should take heart from this display against a good side who they matched for long periods. They seemed to have put the disappointment of the Linwood match to the back of their minds and should have renewed confidence going in to this Saturdays game.
