Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb) As a result of this lesson, students will be able to: Understand & describe each structure & function of the respiratory system Explain what is involved in gas exchange in the lungs Define & explain the mechanism of breathing Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk: Roll/Attendance list Position students with learning/behaviour issues closest to the teacher and modify Computer lab booked activities if needed. Overhead projector or interactive whiteboard Students who misbehaviour will be provided with a warning may be excluded from part of the lesson and given a worksheet to complete. LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson) Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:

[OFFICIAL USE ONLY] Comments by classroom teacher, HOPP, supervisor:

LESSON DELIVERY (attach worksheets, examples, marking key, etc, as relevant) Resources/Refe Time Motivation and Introduction: rences Align these with 1. Welcome class the segment 5mins 2. Mark the absentees and record attendance where they will 3. Introduction to the lesson and explanation objectives be introduced. 4. Log on to www.buildyourwarrior.weebly.com

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions): Objective 1: 20mins Activity 1: Firstly students must research the respiratory system and note the structures involved using these websites:

ICT tools: Cacoo

Inner Body

Live Science

http://www.livescience.com/22616-respiratory-system.html Activity 2: For the second task students are to find a partner. Sharing a computer, sign up to 'Cacoo' and design a flowchart or mind map using this ICT tool. This flowchart or mind map will explain the respiratory system describing each structure and function. Students are to then use the snipping tool to capture their work and save to their documents.

Key teaching points: The Respiratory System The organs of the respiratory system ensure that oxygen enters the body and carbon dioxide leaves the body. Ventilation is another term for breathing that includes both inspiration or inhalation and expiration or exhalation. The Upper Respiratory Tract The nasal cavities, pharynx, and larynx are the organs of the upper respiratory tract. The Nose The Pharynx The Larynx

The Lower Respiratory Tract The trachea and the rest of the respiratory system are in the lower respiratory tract. The Trachea The Bronchial Tree The Lungs The Alveoli

Teaching strategies: For students attention, monitors will be turned off and eyes will be asked to be directed to the front Provide students with feedback of time management, and criteria of objectives

Objective 2: Students will watch a video already provided on gas exchange http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/pe/appliedanatomy/ respiratory/1_anatomy_respiratorysys_act.shtml 5 mins Objective 3: Students will sign up to 'popplet' and use this ICT tool to create a poster displaying the following:

20mins

Title Labelled diagram of the respiratory system Snip it of 'Cacoo' flowchart or mind map Your research on gas exchange (definition & diagram explaining the process) The mechanism of breathing (definition & diagram explaining the process)

ICT tools: Popplet

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students) Provide feedback and congratulate students on their performance with the new ICT tools & knowledge learnt today Recap the ICT skills and knowledge on todays lesson (Check for student understanding) Ask the class three key teaching points associated with the Respiratory system and three key teaching points of the gas exchange. Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?) Next Lesson- The circulatory system. 5mins Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be

judged?) Informal Observation: Students are constantly being assessed in science on their Self Management Skills and knowledge and understanding.
