Solar Charge Controller

(Designed by CRC Bhopal) Problem: Engine alternator do not starts due to battery discharge. Battery discharges due to engine alternator not working for long time. Old battery requires frequent charging and due to partial discharge condition of the battery, engine is not able to start when required. If battery is not sustained at a voltage between 12-13V for long time it might not be able to regain its charge and may become dead. Observation: It is found that lead acid batteries have self discharge rate of 10% per month for batteries in good condition. For old batteries considering the discharge@20% per month For a 200 AH Battery for 20% Discharge Rate (For 12 V Old VRLA/ weak LEAD-ACID Cell ) Total Discharge per month =200X20/100=40Ah/month Average discharge per day:40/30=1.33Ah/day If we are able to charge the battery with a rate more than 1.33 Ah/day there will be no net discharge of Batteries. For weak Lead Acid batteries a 20W Solar Panel Supplied with FWTs is required with the charge controller. For extremely poor Lead acid /VRLA batteries a 37 watt solar panel (Supplied

with MARR) may be used considering rainy/cloudy weather conditions. The

Old / discarded VRLA (2.0 V cells x 6 Nos. =12 V of 200AH) battery can also be used for running the engine alternator with solar controller. Solution: MOSFET Based solar charge controller A solar charge controller is designed to charge the battery in engine alternator using 20W (FWT)/37W (MARR) solar panel. This controller is able to charge the battery at a rate which is more than self discharge rate of battery, thus, by sustaining the battery voltage between 12-13V needed for starting the engine alternator. Charge Controller Specifications: Input: 12V/20W to 60W solar panel Output: 12V/3 Amps (for 60W solar panel)

Other applications: The solar controller can be used for boost charging the batteries up to 100 AH capacity with a 37W Solar Panel. The Solar controller can also be used for boost charging /recovery of batteries of SMPS of FWTS(7AH/12V) and Cor- Dect CPM batteries (3.3AH/12V) lying unused for a long period by charging these batteries using solar controller with 20W/10W Solar panel. Conclusion: This controller is useful for charging engine alternator batteries. This controller will solve the problem of engine alternator not starting due to battery charging problems. Approximate cost of the controller is Rs.500/-.The solar panels of 20W & 37 W were supplied in field unit with MARR/FWT may be used with Solar Charge controller.
