Estimates of Potato, 2012-2013

Introduction
Potato is a prominent crop in respect of production and its internal demand in Bangladesh.
Potato cultivation has been getting popular over the last many years. The weather condition for
potato cultivation was favourable during the sowing, growing and harvesting period of the survey
year 2012-13. The area of local variety remained almost same with regard to previous year. It was
found that the farmers were interested to grow more high yielding variety.
In a subjective manner, farmers were interviewed on some points relating to management
and distribution system of seed and fertilizer. They opined that proper management and timely
distribution of seed and fertilizer led to a substantial higher production this year. At the same time
no natural calamity was reported during potato cultivation and its harvesting. As a result, the area
and yield rate has significantly increased, which contributed 4.85% increase in total volume of
production.

Area
Total area under potato crop has been estimated 10,97,503 acres (4,44,135 hectares)
compared to 10,63,204 acres (4,30,255 hectares) of the last year. A comparative area estimates of
potato are shown below;

Yield
Average yield rate of potato has been estimated 210.00 maunds per acre (19.370 metric tons per
hectare) compared to 206.76 maunds (19.071 metric tons per hectare) of previous year. A
comparison of estimated yield rates of potato is shown below:
