Rubematic Inventors Contest 2014 Expectation Guide Directions: 1.

Create a blueprint of your design with your group using the resources provided at your table. The blueprint must have the dimensions (length and width) and square footage (area) that the machine will encompass. All materials must be converted to a scale so that your blueprints are accurate representations from which engineers can re-create. Check the Rubematic Score Sheets for further requirements. 2. Circle where the energy transfers are occurring, the type of energy transfer, as well as the simple machines used. Check your Rubematic Score Sheets for further requirements. 3. After your teacher checks your blueprints and scale representation, it is building time! Build your machine, and make sure to refer back to the Rubematic Score Sheets as you do so with your team. 4. Create a 2 page reection on the following: ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! a. How do simple machines make work and life easier? b. Is it possible for anything to truly be a simple machine depending on how you use it? Why or why not? c. Explain the importance of energy transfer within a machine. d. Does your machine have quality mechanical advantage, based on its work and power? Why or why not? If it doesnt, how could your team improve such to make it more efcient?

e. What changes would you make to your machine if you had to complete the Rubematics Inventors Contest again? Be specic in your explanation. 5. Provide calculations regarding your machine. Using the Vernier Force Probes and your formulas, provide information to your clients on your machines efciency by including the calculations and responses to the questions below. You may include this in your reection as an addition, or on a separate document. Remember, to get accurate results, you must complete a set of trials! a. How much work is being completed by your machine? b. How much power does your machine have? c. Explain how the work and power of the machine may effect its supply and demand within the given market place. How would you adapt and customize your design to create a more marketable item? 6. Create an advertisement of the machine. Be CREATIVE! Think about the following:
! !

a. Who is my audience? b. What form of media will best grab their attention? c. How can I market so that my Rubematic Invention will be remembered? d. What information about my machine do people need to know?

Suggestion: Assign team roles by using the following as guide to help your team succeed in the Rubematic Inventors Contest!

Reminders: 1. Remember, failure is part of the scientic process...to quote Thomas Edison: I have not failed. I've just found 10000 ways that won't work. If you are failing, you ARE doing something right! 2. You are responsible for it being complete by the end of class Friday to submit to the Rubematic Representative! (Ms. Sniff) 3. All supplies are your teams responsibility, as well as clean up. Point deductions will occur for materials not put in their proper place.
