2. Introduction to Repeaters
2.1 System Introduction
A repeater is a device that receives the RF signal, amplifies and then retransmits it to the weak
or blind area. Repeaters overcome the attenuation caused by propagation loss and obstacles.
Repeater solutions are used in many different applications, such as basements, apartments,
parking lots and highway, mountain areas etc, where mobile phone signals cannot penetrate.
Extending radio coverage into these dead zones, using the repeater, allows mobile phones to
establish a connection
2.2 General Installation Layout

Figure 1 Outdoor Application
Above provides a typical installation layout of an outdoor project. The repeater is connected via
coaxial cables to donor and service antennas. The donor antenna is placed in one side of the
mountain, pointing to the BTS to receive the signals. The service antenna is placed in the other
side, pointing to the coverage area to make the coverage. By taking advantage of the mountain
between them, the isolation requirement can be met. Mobile signals may then transmit via the
service antenna, repeater and donor antenna to the BTS.

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 10

Double Band Selective Repeater & OMT Users Manual

Figure 2: Indoor Application
Above is the example of repeaters indoor application. The Yagi antenna is used as donor
antenna, which is placed outside of the building where it has easy access to a BTS. Signals
from the donor BTS are then introduced into the repeater. After amplification by the repeater,
signals are divided into several parts by splitters and sent to the service antennas. The service
antennas are placed inside the building where it can extend radio coverage to the dead zones.
By the same way, mobile signals are sent back to the BTS.
2.3 Basic Repeater System Components
Splitters
Splitters are isolated dividers that split or combine RF power. According to the coverage
requirement, splitter can distribute RF power into several paths to achieve coverage of each
area. In the meantime, mobile signals from different coverage areas are combined together and
transmitted into the repeater.
Antennas
Donor Antenna
Directional donor antenna, one for each repeater, is recommended to improve signal strength.
Service Antenna
The service antenna is directional whose half-power beam width is depending on coverage
requirements.

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 11

Double Band Selective Repeater & OMT Users Manual
Coaxial Cables
1/2 and 7/8 coaxial cables (50 impedance) are the recommended for use with repeater.
These coaxial cables have low attenuation properties and are ideal for longer cable run
installations.
Jumper Cables
Jumper cables have the flexible characteristic and they provide an easy way to connect
antennas, splitters and repeaters to coaxial cables.
2.4 Advantages of Repeater
Optimization
During coverage optimization, full coverage cannot always be achieved because of shadowing
and blind spots. If optimization is carried out by simply adjusting antenna direction or height, the
process can be tedious and a long process of trial and error until the coverage is achieved.
The process can be time consuming and most times indoor coverage are not achieved. With
repeaters, separate optimization is carried out while the whole interrelated parameters between
systems remain unaffected.
Same Service Quality with Low investment
When coverage needs to be extended or optimized, installing a new BTS or micro cell may not
be always the best solution and economical. In most cases a repeater will be the best solution
that will provide the same service quality at relatively lower cost.
Fast & easy Installation
Compared to a Base Station, wireless repeaters is space saving and does not need additional
wiring. Its installation simplicity and operational user friendliness appeal greatly to many
operators for the purpose of rural coverage or use of temporary coverage during network
optimization.

2.6 Block Diagram
The repeater has two similar circuits, which are designed for uplink and downlink respectively.
Each circuit consists of three main modules, Low Noise Amplifier (LNA), Frequency Converter
(FC) and Power Amplifier (PA).
At moment we will just consider one part say downlink, which is from BTS to MS. Please note

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 14

that uplink works in the same way but just signal direction is from MS to BTS. Below diagram is
self-explanatory showing signal path after entering into the repeater

MCB
Power Supply

Figure 5 Double Band Selective Repeater
When signal enters into the repeater through duplexer (a passive device that works as a filter),
then either uplink or downlink signal is allowed to pass. The filtered signal enters into LNA in
which weak signals are amplified with low noise figure. Then the signal passes FC where signal
frequency is made to IF to have a good filtration after passing through SAW filter in the FC.
Through module FC, operators signals are selected while the competitors are strongly rejected.
At last, the signal is amplified in the power amplifier (PA) and is sent to service antenna
Double band selective repeater has two separate FC modules, which is applied when the
operator has two separate operating bands
2.7 Outline of Available Functions
Local Control
This function is used when commissioning or checking repeater status on site. Repeater is
connected to a laptop using the RS-232 cable. Operators can configure, check parameters such
as gain, alarm parameters etc. Refer to OMT Users Manual for more details about connection
and OMT operation procedures.
Remote Monitoring
Through the wireless modem, all functions that are accessible on the local end can also be
accessed from maintenance center remotely. Alarm signals are constantly reported to
maintenance center for constant tracking of the overall system. Refer to OMT Users Manual for
more details about connection and OMT operation procedure.

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 15

MCB
The repeater is equipped with MCB, monitor and control board, which displays repeater
operating and various alarm status. At the mean time, UL and DL attenuation, through dip switch
on this board, can be adjusted to make repeater to perform its best
Detailed alarm of the repeater can be viewed on the front panel, please refer to Section 5:
Maintenance for in-depth details of each individual alarm condition and their solution
31dB Manual Gain Control
During installation, please attenuate the repeaters DL & UL gain (using the OMT software or via
the dip switch on MCB), taking into account the path loss value and isolation issue to avoid
interference with the BTS and to optimize coverage region
20dB AGC
The 20dB AGC is used to maintain steady output power even when the source signal fluctuates.
It also can be used as an index to evaluate the amplifier. This function effectively prevents the
equipment from entering into saturated state and thereby avoids signal distortion and call drops
in the coverage area
Backup Battery (Optional)
According to the customers requirement, two kinds of backup battery solutions are available to
support either the MCB or the whole repeater to work when AC input is off
1. Inside backup battery: The backup battery is equipped inside the repeater, and it can
support the MCB (monitoring part of repeater) to work up to four hours without AC input. At
the meantime, an alarm, Master AC In Failure, will be sent back to the control center
automatically to remind the operator to check the power supply status
2. External backup battery: The external backup battery is connecting with the repeater
through the battery port. The battery can support the whole repeater working up to 4 hours
when AC input is off

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 16

3. Installation
3.1 Preparation
a. Ensure the AC power is within the repeaters working range: AC 110V/220V 20%. A
separate circuit breaker is recommended
b. Ensure theres sufficient isolation between the donor and service antennas
c. Its recommended some jumper cables be prepared.
d. Repeater used for outdoor installation is water resistant, but it is possible that the
repeaters performance may be influenced by weather factors such as temperature and
humidity. It is suggested to install the repeater in an indoor location with good draught.
If the repeater needs to be installed outdoor, ensure that there is good draught and will not face
direct sunlight and in a location that stays within - 25n to 55n . A shield used to protect the
repeater is recommended in this condition.
Recommended tools list
Table below list recommended tools that will be required for a successful installation:

RF arrestor (optional) 1 Other accessories
3.2 Antenna Installation
Selection of the right antennas is one of the most important aspects for a successful installation
of a repeater system. Installation location and performance/characteristic of the antenna can
strongly influence the Rxpower and Ec/Io of the intended coverage area.
Rxpower and Ec/Io are two important parameters, which describe the power level and quality of
the CDMA signal. Both parameters can be tested using a testing mobile such as TEMS

,etc.
The antennas are usually selected and purchased by the customer. We will provide
recommendations for the most suitable types of antennas based on our experience for a

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 17

Double Band Selective Repeater & OMT Users Manual
successful and trouble free installation of the repeater if required.
3.2.1 Donor Antenna
3.2.1.1 Donor Antenna Selection
There are many types of antennas on the market, but the following general characteristics
should be met during selecting the donor antenna:
1. Working frequency: The donor antenna needs to be compatible with the repeaters
operating frequency range.
2. Directivity characteristic: An antenna with good directivity is recommended, it is essential for
the repeater to introduce a clean donor signal to amplify.
3. Waterproof: The donor antenna needs to be waterproof to prevent rainwater from affecting
the antennas characteristics, ultimately affecting the performance of the repeater.
4. For outdoor repeater, antennas front to back ratio is recommended to be higher than 20dB
to assure excellent isolation on the site.
5. Recommended donor antennas:
Indoor Coverage: Yagi Antenna
Outdoor Coverage: Parabolic Antenna, Corner Reflected Antenna
3.2.1.1 Donor Antenna Installation
Donor antenna is to be installed in the location where can receive excellent signals from donor
BTS. When installing the donor antenna, the following conditions need to be considered:
1. The antenna is recommended to be installed where donor BTS is in line of sight. The Ec/Io
index must be higher than -7dB, while the Ec/Io of primary sector is at least 8dB higher than
that of other sectors. The signal level, Rxpower, at the BTS port of the repeater is
recommended to be in the range listed in the table below:
Repeater Type R23-CDMA-D R24-CDMA-D R25-CDMA-D
Rxpower Range -73dBm ~ -53dBm -69dBm ~ -49dBm -66dBm ~ -46dBm
When installing the donor antenna in a relatively high location, lightning arrestor is necessary.
Grounding of the arrestor and antenna are essential.
2. Waterproof of donor antennas connector with sealant is highly recommended.
3. For outdoor project, the antenna needs to be positioned in an area between the donor BTS

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 18

Double Band Selective Repeater & OMT Users Manual
and coverage, pointing to the donor BTS to get an excellent donor signal.
4. For indoor project, usually the donor antenna is installed against the wall of the building
towards the donor BTS. It should be installed at least 3 meters above the ground to avoid
shadowing when objects pass in the front of the donor antenna. Also install the donor
antenna higher than 7
th
floor is not recommended, since the antenna located in a high floor
will be difficult to obtain a signal with good Ec/Io due to the interference of signals from
various BTSs nearby.
3.2.2 Service Antenna
3.2.2.1 Service Antenna Selection
The service antenna is usually selected and purchased by the customer. It need meet the
requirements below:
1. Working frequency: The service antenna needs to be compatible with the repeaters
operating frequency range.
2. Half-power Beam width: Select the antenna with suitable half-power beam width according
to the coverage area.
3. For outdoor coverage, the service antenna need meet two conditions below: Waterproof and
excellent Front-to-back Ratio. The antenna needs to be waterproof to prevent rainwater from
affecting the antennas characteristics, ultimately affecting the performance of the repeater.
At the meantime, the front to back ratio needs to be bigger than 20dB to assure enough
isolation of the site.
4. For indoor coverage, a broadband antenna, which can support the frequency range of
824~2200MHz, are selected to be compatible to all systems.
5. Recommended service antennas:
Indoor Project: Indoor omni-directional antenna, indoor panel antenna
Outdoor Project: Parabolic Antenna, Corner Reflected Antenna, Outdoor Panel Antenna
3.2.2.2 Service Antenna Installation
It is necessary to find a good location for the service antenna in order to achieve best coverage
In indoor coverage, the conditions below need to be considered:
1. Avoid installing near metal or obstacles that may influence its coverage performance.
2. Install the antenna at least 2m above the floor for the best coverage and for the
convenience of passers-by.
3. The service antenna should not be installed close to the donor antenna to avoid issues with
isolation.

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 19

Double Band Selective Repeater & OMT Users Manual
In outdoor coverage, the conditions below need to be considered:
1. Avoid install near trees or other obstacles that may influence its coverage performance.
2. The service antenna should not be installed too close to the donor antenna to avoid issues
with isolation. The angle between donor antenna direction and service direction needs to be
bigger than 90 degrees. The best condition is donor and service antennas are installed in
opposite direction.

necessary. Grounding of arrestor and antenna is essential
4. Waterproofing of service antennas connector with sealant is highly recommended
3.2.3 Isolation
Isolation is an important concept when it comes to implement in a repeater system, especially for
outdoor project. There must be sufficient isolation within the repeater system, which means there
must be enough distance and obstacles between donor and service antennas, and their direction
is recommended to be opposite. The propagation loss between the antennas needs to be at
least 15dB above the gain value used by the repeater. Non-compliance to this criterion can result
in poor signal to the coverage area and may damage the amplifier of the repeater.
3.2.3.1 Self-oscillation Concept
Isolation is the attenuation value from the repeaters output port to its input port. For a wireless
repeater, insufficient isolation between donor and service antennas will result in self-oscillation.

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 20

Double Band Selective Repeater & OMT Users Manual

Figure 7
As shown in the above diagram, the donor antenna receives a RF signal f1 from the Donor BTS,
after amplification by the repeater with gain G, the signal radiates out via the service antenna. Part of
f1 (f1) radiates back towards the donor antenna (due to side lobe characteristics of antennas) and is
picked up by the donor antenna again and going through the amplification process again. Severe
self-oscillation issues result in poor signal quality and at times can damage the repeaters amplifiers.
To prevent self-oscillation from occurring, the isolation value must be at least 15dB above the
repeater gain.

When self-oscillation occurs, the alarm LED, AGC Alarm will be flickering. Repeater may be
damaged if it operates under self-oscillation condition.
3.2.3.2 Obtaining the Isolation Value
Theoretical calculation (for reference only)
The physical isolation between the donor and service antennas can be theoretically estimates
using the following formulas.

I = Isolation
D = Distance between donor and service antennas (m)
= Wavelength (m)
G
d
= Gain of donor antenna facing service antenna
G
s
= Gain of service antenna facing donor antenna
If there is an obstacle (wall etc.) between donor and service antenna, the attenuation value of
the obstacle need be added into the equation.
Isolation Gain of Repeater + 15dB
Vertical Isolation: I(dB) = 28 + 40 log(D/)
Horizontal Isolation: I(dB) = 22 + 20 log(D/) (G
d
+ G
s
)

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 21

In the formula above, the antennas used are 16dBi gain with 28dB front-to-back ratio while
installed in the opposite direction.

To obtain an accurate and more precise estimation of the isolation value, a physical
measurement may be carried out to obtain the isolation value for the actually environment
where the antennas are installed. The testing procedure is
Connect a signal generator to the donor antenna cable as illustrated below and transmit a
known frequency and power level from the signal generator. Frequency needs to be within
the idle frequency between uplink and downlink
For example, in CDMA 800 system, uplink is 824~849MHz and downlink is 869~894MHz.
We can take the frequency 859MHz, which is within 849MHz and 869MHz, to make the test
Connect the service antenna to a spectrum analyzer and scan for the known frequency
Take a reading of the power level from the spectrum analyzer
Subtract the power level received at the spectrum analyzer from the power level of the
signal generator to obtain the isolation value

Figure 8
A relatively strong transmitting power from the signal generator is recommended (excess of
25dBm) for easy recognition and detection by the spectrum analyzer. It is also recommended to
check the signal generators real output power by the spectrum analyzer before test. RF
attenuator needs to be used during checking to protect the spectrum analyzer
Isolation (dB) = Output Power from Signal Generator Received Power at
the Spectrum Analyzer

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 22

Double Band Selective Repeater & OMT Users Manual
For example, signal generator sends out a signal 859MHz with 25dBm power level
The signal scanned by the spectrum analyzer = -70dBm
So, Isolation = 25dBm - (-70dBm) = 95dB
In this condition, to avoid self-osciallation, the gain of repeater must be set to be no more than
80dB, which is 15dB lower than the isolation value

4. Commissioning
Repeaters commissioning is to set the repeaters UL and DL gain properly so as to optimize the
performance of the repeater. The downlink output power, repeater uplink noise floor and
isolation will be considered during this part
4.1 Commissioning Principle
4.1.1 Downlink Output Power
The downlink output power of the repeater is dependent on the input power and the repeater
gain. To ensure the maximum power of the repeater is achieved at the MS port of the repeater,
the following condition should be met

4.1.1.1 Gain and Output Power
The gain is the amplifying ability of the repeater. The repeater has a constant gain for both uplink
and downlink. The gain can be adjusted by setting an attenuation value
The maximum output power of the repeater is determined by the linearity of the amplifier block of
the repeater. For any given input signal power, its corresponding output is increased by the gain
of the repeater, the output power will increase along a linear curve based on the fix gain value
If the input signal amplified by the gain set exceeds the rated maximum output, the AGC
(automatic gain control) function will be triggered. The AGC ensures that the maximum output
power of repeater is maintained and does not overdrive the repeaters amplification circuit

Figure 17
DL Gain = Min {(Required Output Power - Input Power), Maximum DL Gain}

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 28

Double Band Selective Repeater & OMT Users Manual
Suppose maximum output power of repeater is 37dBm and its gain is 90dB
So, when input power is weaker than -53Bm, output power = Input Power + 90dB
When input power is stronger than -53dBm, output power = 37dBm
4.1.1.2 Link Budget
Below provides a typical process for calculating the link budget of the repeater system.
Note that gain is 90dB in the picture below.

Figure 18
When the maximum output power can not be achieved due to low donor signal input availability,
even at maximum gain, the following two approaches will help increase the output power

Figure 19

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 29

Double Band Selective Repeater & OMT Users Manual
4.1.2 UL Noise Floor
In CDMA network, to avoid interference to the donor BTS in the uplink, the noise floor produced by
the repeater must be kept lower than -114dBm when reaching the donor BTS by adjusting repeaters
gain
The uplink noise produced by repeater can be estimated using the following equations:

This amplified noise floor can be introduced to BTS. To minimize the affect of the noise to the BTS,
the noise level reaching the BTS should ideally be below -114dBm

If the noise floor reaching BTS is higher than -114dBm after the propagation loss, interference to the
BTS is possible
By combining equations (1) and (2) together, a suitable uplink gain value of the repeater can be
calculated to ensure the noise level reaching the BTS is below -114dBm.

Example: Suppose repeaters UL gain is 90dB while noise figure is 5dB.

Figure 20
Propagation Loss = Pilot Channel Output Power Pilot Channel Input Power
= 37dBm (-45dBm)
= 82dB
UL Gain = 90dB Propagation Loss Noise Figure of Repeater = 82dB 5dB = 77dB
In this condition, the noise level reaching the BTS will exceed -114dBm, so that UL gain need to be
reduced to avoid the interference to donor BTS.
UL Noise Floor = -114dBm + UL Gain + Noise Figure of Repeater.1
UL Noise Floor Propagation Loss -114dBm...2
UL Gain Propagation Loss - Noise Figure of Repeater

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 30

4.1.3 Isolation
Isolation is an important condition that MUST be met for trouble free operation of the repeater.
To ensure the repeaters working properly, the following equation MUST be met

Refer to Section 3.2.3 Isolation for further details about isolation and how to measure the value
4.2 Repeater Configuration
4.2.1 Gain Calculation
Before switching on the repeater, repeater gain needs to be calculated, basing on equations
established in the previous sections.
4.2.1.1 DL Gain Value
Downlink gain value calculation is based on the downlink input power and output power.
The following information should be obtained before hand
Power level of pilot channel at Donor Antenna (without donor antenna gain). Rxpower
Gain of Donor Antenna G
Ant

Loss of Coaxial Cable L (Obtained from Cable Spec.)
With the information above, DL gain setting can be calculated as following
Input Power = Rxlev + G
Ant
- L
So, DL Gain = Min {(DL Required Output Power - Input Power), Maximum DL Gain}
Considering breath effect inside the coverage, the DL Required Output Power cannot exceed
DL Total Output power - 6dB.
Example:
Suppose DL Total Output Power = 37dBm; DL Gain = 90dB; Rxpower = -55dBm; G
Ant
E 8dBi;
L = 3dB;
Required Output Power = DL Total Output Power 6dB = 31dBm
Input Power = -55dBm + 8dBi 3dB = -50dBm
So, DL Required Output Power - Input Power = 31dBm - (-50dBm) = 81dB
Hence, DL Gain = Min {(DL Required Output Power - Input Power - 6dB), Maximum DL Gain}
Repeater Gain Isolation 15dB

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 31

Double Band Selective Repeater & OMT Users Manual
= Min (81dB, 90dB)
= 81dB
4.2.1.2 UL Gain Value
Taking into account uplink noise floor and gain balance issue between uplink and downlink in the
CDMA system, it is recommended the uplink gain be set 5dB lower than the downlink gain

When repeater is close to the BTS, there will be high input power at the BTS port, so
interference may exist even when the attenuation has reached its maximum value. It is
recommended to add an RF attenuator at repeaters BTS port to avoid interference to the BTS.
4.2.1.3 Isolation
Refer to section 3.2 to obtain the isolation value and ensure the isolation condition meet:

As defined above, UL Gain = DL Gain 5dB, so the equation can be changed to be:

Sufficient Isolation
DL gain is set to be the calculated value in section 4.2.1.1 and UL Gain = DL gain 5dB
Insufficient Isolation
Adjust or move the antennas to increase isolation value. If isolation cannot be increased,
readjust the DL gain as the figure below

Example:
DL gain = 81dB (as previously calculated in 4.2.1.1) and Isolation is 90dB
In this condition, the DL Gain has to be decreased to meet the isolation requirement
DL Gain = 90dB 15dB = 75dB
UL Gain = DL Gain 5dB = 70dB
UL Gain = DL Gain 5dB
Isolation Gain + 15dB
Isolation DL Gain + 15dB
DL Gain = Isolation 15dB
UL Gain = DL Gain 5dB

4.2.2 Start-up the Repeater
Below outlines the procedures and conditions when switching on the repeater
Make sure repeaters BTS and MS ports are connected with 50 terminators (Figure 19)

Figure 21
Only when isolation is 15dB higher than repeaters maximum gain, can the repeater be
switched on. Otherwise, connect the repeaters ports with terminators and then adjust the gain
lower than isolation 15dB at first. Failure to comply may result in self-osciallation and damage
the repeater.
Make sure power supply cable is connected to the repeater properly, and the voltage is
within repeaters voltage range: 110/220V 20%.
Connect the repeater to a laptop via a RS232 cable if monitoring the repeaters parameters
is required.
Press the AC Switch to be ON and DC Switch to be OFF.
As can be seen in the picture below, there are two power switches on the power supply module.
Make sure that DC switch is always OFF, otherwise the backup battery may be damaged when
theres no AC input.

5. Maintenance
5.1 Alarms and Solutions
When an alarm is triggered, its corresponding LED will change to be red and displayed on the
front panel.
The following table lists the different alarms and possible solutions to correct the fault.
Alarm Cause Solution

UL AGC Alarm
AGC Alarm
1. High input level at the MS port of
the repeater.
2. A self-osciallation condition may
also have occurred.
1. Decrease the gain of uplink by
adjusting the UL attenuation to clear
the alarm.
2. Increase the separation distance of
the donor and service antennas. And
then adjust the gain to meet the
isolation issue.

DL AGC Alarm
AGC Alarm

1. High input level at the BTS port of
the repeater, AGC is active and
more than 20dB attenuation has
been applied.
2. A self-osciallation condition may
also have occurred.
1. Decrease the gain by adjusting the
manual attenuation to clear the
alarm.
2. Increase the separation distance of
the donor and service antenna. And
then adjust the gain to meet the
isolation issue.
DL Low O/P Alarm
1. DL input power of repeater is low.
2. Too much attenuation value has
been set according to insufficient
isolation.
3. PA Switch has shut down to protect
the repeater.
4. Unsuitable setting in OMT.
5. Amplifier inside the repeater has
been damaged.

1. Adjust the donor antenna to receive a
stronger signal. Input signal of
repeater within -40dBm ~ -60dBm is
recommended.
2. Increase the distance between donor
and service antenna to increase the
isolation between them, so that more
gain can be used.
3. PA switch will shut down automatically
when temperature is high, or weak
self-osciallation occurs. Check the
condition of the site, and then switch
on PA through OMT.
4. Set limit value to be 10 dBm. Refer to

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 37

Double Band Selective Repeater & OMT Users Manual
OMT Users Manual for more detail.
5. If all the problems above dont exist,
please check the output power with
the spectrum analyzer. If the output
power is low, which cannot meet the
formula: Output = Input + Gain,
repeater is damaged. Return the unit
to place of purchase for repair.

DL Over O/P Alarm

1. Extremely high input level at the
BTS port of the repeater. The
output power has exceeded the
AGCs control.
2. Insufficient isolation will also
cause this alarm.
1. Decrease the gain by adjusting the
relevant manual attenuation or add an
RF attenuator at the BTS port of
repeater to decrease the input signal
power.
2. Move the location of antennas to
increase the distance between them.
Door Open Alarm The door has been opened.
Lock the door before leaving site to avoid
the repeaters unauthorized open.
Over Temp Alarm
The temperature of the repeater is
above the set threshold, which is
caused by the installation
environment.
Repeater has to be installed vertically.
Relocate the repeater to a more
ventilated position.
DC Voltage Alarm
1. Input AC power is not stable.
2. Repeaters power supply module
has been damaged
1. Check whether the input AC power is
stable, it should within 110/ 220V
20%. If the AC is not stable, an UPS
with square wave is recommended.
2. In the condition input AC power is
correct and alarm still exists, return
the power supply module to place of
purchase for repair.
UL PA Failure
UL LNA Failure
DL PA Failure
DL LNA Failure
The UL or DL PA/ LNA module has
been damaged. Most conditions it is
caused by self-osciallation.
Return the damaged module back to the
place of purchase for repair.
Band1/ CH1 PLL

means repeater has been damaged.
Please return the damaged FC
module to place of purchase for repair.
5.2 Troubleshooting
Below is a table that lists some of the conditions, possible reasons and solutions for situations in
which the repeater is not faulty but fault are due to some other conditions. Before sending the
repeater for factory service, please check the trouble shooting measures listed below.

Status Possible Reason Solution
Issue 1: Repeater doesnt work properly
Power LED doesnt
glow after power is
switched on.
1. Power cable doesnt connect
properly
2. Input AC is out of the rated voltage
range
1.Check the power cable and outlet to
make sure there are no
discontinuities
2. The AC voltage range must be
between AC100/22020%V
Signals have not been
amplified after repeater
installed.
1. No AC input
2. Antennas are wrongly connected
with repeaters ports
3. Working frequency of the
repeater has been changed due
to improper operation.
1. Check power cable and the
power outlet are switched on
2. Ensure BTS port is connected to
donor antenna and MS port is
connected to service antenna
3. Use the OMT to move the
frequency to repeaters working
frequency. Refer to 6.3.2
Frequency of OMT Users
Manual for more details.
Issue 2: Communication cannot be established
Repeater cannot
communicate with OMT
when it is connecting
with the laptop locally.
1. The COM port set by OMT is not
compatible with the laptop.
2. Repeaters ID is not compatible
with the ID of the repeater
established by OMT.
1. Check the COM port number of
the laptop, and then change it to
be one within COM1 to COM4 if
needed. Change the COM port of
OMT to be same with the laptops
comport. Refer to 6.1.1
Connection via RS232 of OMT

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 39

Double Band Selective Repeater & OMT Users Manual
users manual for more details.
2. Execute the setting ID process
before searching repeaters
parameters. Refer to 6.2.1
Setting Repeater ID of OMT
Users Manual for more details.
Remote
communication
cannot be
established.
1. The PIN code of the modem
hasnt been released.
2. The modem hasnt connected with
the network.
3. Initialization of the modem hasnt
been successful.

1. Use the mobile phone or some
other method to release the PIN
code of the SIM card.
2. The indicator LED of the modem
will start to flicker when it has
connected the network.
3. The LED4 and LED5 will be
flickering by turns and the OMT will
show OK when the modems are
initializing. Repeat the initialization
procedure if the above condition
cannot be got. Refer to 7.2
Establishing Remote
Connection for more details.
Issue 3: Coverage area problem
Inside the coverage,
received signal value
fluctuates and Ec/Io is
bad.
1. Input signal of repeater is not
stable and Ec/Io is bad.
2. Pilot channel pollution: the Ec/Io
of primary pilot channel is higher
than secondary pilot channel less
than 8dB.
3. Theres not enough distance
between donor and service
antenna, and self-osciallation
occurs.
1. Use the testing mobile to find an
area that the signal is stable and
Ec/Io is bigger than -7dB to install
the donor antenna. Make sure the
donor BTS is line-of-sight from the
donor antenna.
2. Adjust the donor antenna and
make sure the gap Ec/Io between
primary pilot channel and
secondary channel is bigger than
8dB.
3. Increase the distance between
donor and service antenna. Test
the isolation, and make sure
isolation is 15dB or more than
repeaters gain.

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 40

Double Band Selective Repeater & OMT Users Manual
Repeater is working
properly. But when its
temperature is high, it
shut down
automatically.
When repeater is installed in a
close area, repeaters PA module,
main amplifying module, will shut
down automatically when the
repeaters temperature is high,
and will start to work again when
the temperature has decreased to
be the normal range.
Repeater must be installed
vertically and at least 1 m higher
than the floor. Move the repeater to
a ventilate area to let the repeater
work stable.
Inside the repeaters
coverage area,
received signal is
good, but successful
call cannot be
achieved.
1. The PN chips delay has been
increased after introducing the
repeater. The searching windows
setting of the donor BTS low, so
that the signal from the repeater
cannot be detected.
2. Repeaters UL gain setting is low,
so unbalance occurs between
uplink and downlink.
3. Interference exists inside the
coverage.
1. Increase the searching windows
parameters (SRCH_WIN_A,
SRCH_WIN_N and
SRCH_WIN_R ) of the BTS.
2. Make sure the UL gain is lower
than DL gain no more than 10dB in
indoor coverage and 5dB in
outdoor coverage.
3. Check the signals inside the
coverage through spectrum
analyzer in two conditions:
repeater is working and repeater is
shut down. Compare the test result
to see whether interference exist
inside the coverage or not.
Coverage decreases
after a period
operation.
1. Donor signal strength decreased.
(P.S. The signal strength can
fluctuate because of
environmental changes. E.g.
Construction of new buildings.)
2. The quality of feeder cable system
decreases because of oxidization
of the cable connector after
certain period of usage especially
in harsh conditions (e.g. Seaside,
areas with chemicals) or cable
damage by mice or insects
3. Change of indoor structure or
upholstery. The change of indoor
1. Check the signal strength at donor
antenna. Re-position Donor
Antenna to solve problem.
2. Check the VSWR of the feeder
cable system to find out the faulty
point and then replace the
damaged cable or connector
3. Reconsider the position of
antennas and the layout of cables if
such change occurs

Kathrein UM-CD-03-001C Page 41

structure or upholstery will
influence directly the predicted
propagation loss in the previous
design.
5.2 Repeater Replacement
If the repeater needs to be replaced, the following procedure is recommended:
Switch off the power supply
Disconnect the power cable
Disconnect the RF feeder cables
Disconnect the grounding cable of repeater
Loosen the screws at the bracket of repeater
Lift the repeater off from the bracket
If the repeater is not replaced immediately with another unit, make sure to weather protect the
open-ended cables

1.1 Operation and Maintenance Terminal
The Kathreins OMT is powerful software when it is incorporated with Kathreins repeaters;
it allows the operators to configure, control and to monitor the repeater locally or from any
location away (remote sites) (provided the repeaters are equipped with modem). If a wireless
modem is installed, the alarm will be sent to the control center at the same time.
This man-machine interface used to monitor and operate the repeater system is referred to as
the OMT. The OMT provides the real-time system monitoring and may be accessed locally
through the serial connection or remotely via the wireless modem.

1.2 Operation, Administration and Maintenance Applet
When connected to a Kathrein repeater, the Operation, Administration and Maintenance
(hereafter called OA&M for short) applet may be launched. The OA&M is a window based
user friendly interface that provides the operator a means of monitoring and controlling the
repeater system in either a local or remote site.
The OA&M applet is used to configure OMTs parameters and tailor the repeaters
configuration according to the donor BTS. The OA&M applet also provides a log that can
monitor and track to the status and messages.

6.3.8 AGC Link

This is the function to control the interference of repeater to donor BTS automatically. Once
repeater is working on the site, if the downlink input power increases and output power has
reached repeaters total output power, which means AGC is active, AGC Link will begin to
work: attenuate the DL gain 1dB per step until that repeater cannot reach total output power,
and then attenuate the UL gain by the same value.

6.3.9 Set Attenuation

The Set Attenuation tab allows the user to set the Uplink or Downlink attenuation
manually.
The Uplink and Downlink attenuation should be set when the input power is too high,
isolation is insufficient or the uplink noise of the repeater dramatically interferes with the
BTS. Refer to Section 4.1 Commissioning of Repeater Users manual for more detail.
To set the UL or DL attenuation value, use the up and down arrow to change the value to be
the required value. Values range from 0 to 31dB. Once set select Save and then Set to
finish the setting.

7. Remote Communication
For remote communication, at least two modems with SIM cards attached are required; one
is equipped with repeater and the other one connects to the computer in the control center.
The communication between the repeater and the control center can be established by the
wireless modems, and information is transferred through the CDMA network, just like in
case of two mobile phones communication.
Important: Make sure the PIN code of the SIM card has been disabled before use.
Remote Communication is divided into two parts: Local setting on the site and Remote
Setting in the control center.
7.1 Local Setting (On the site)
Initial setting of some repeater parameters can only be set via a local connection with the
repeater during commissioning on the site.
1. Connect the repeater to the computer as per section 4.1.
2. Choose Local Control in theCommunication Mode and then click Start.
3. Create a new repeater: enter the SIM card number inside the repeaters modem in Phone
Number column.
