Chapter I

Introduction

Nowadays the contributory of illnesses are insects. To minimize their effects, people resort to the use of lotions, oils, etc. and even wearing of almost closed dresses to hide body from insect bites such as long sleeve, knee high socks, long pants, etc. Avoiding catching insect causing diseases has been a challenge to everybody and to our group in particular. That is why we decided to undertake this investigatory project on insect repellent.

Our group decided to use lanzones peelings as the raw material or main ingredient of the mosquito coil because it is easy to find considering that nowadays is its season and is also cheap. And we decided to make a mosquito coil because we want to know if the lanzones would be effective in driving away the mosquito. And so that we can have an alternative insect repellent that can be done at home and it would lessen the expenses because some of the insect repellent that you can find in the market is expensive.

Mostly we want to investigate this problem because we think that it would be more effective with the use of natural ingredients and not processed chemical ingredients. It is also because we have seen that insect repellent is very popular in the market nowadays.

Statement of the problem

How effective is a kilo of lanzones peeling as an insect repellent for mosquitoes? Would it be more effective as much as its counter part of the commercial mosquito coil?

Formulation of the Hypothesis

If the use of lanzones peelings is not effective then it cannot be used as an alternative mosquito repellent in eliminating mosquitoes.

Significance of the Study

The Philippines, as we all know is a tropical country. People experience the heat of the sun and heavy rains. The climate change might affect our health. Due to excessive rains, there are effects where stagnant water rests.

One thing that will surely attracted by the stagnant water is the mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are more likely to carry dreadful sickness that may be transmitted when the person was bitten.

Scope and limitations Scope

In this investigatory project, we would like to promote the use of more natural ingredients and so that we could also help the people who cannot afford to buy the commercialized insect repellent. And to help people avoid illness that is caused by mosquitoes.

Limitation
This investigatory project is limited to mosquitoes only.

Lanzones season is generally is October. This fruit is a must have. The problem about dengue mosquitoes still goes on despite all the government efforts. Lanzones peel can help reduce the incident of dengue because it acts as mosquito repellent like atis, citronella and madre de cacao. Lanzones peels can be dried and burned slowly to produce a pleasant smell that drives away mosquitoes. http://www.luntiancorner.com/living/lanzones-mosguito-repellant/ By Dee Benjamin, uses of lanzones peels Smoke from burning lanzones rinds repels mosquitoes. Lanzones, scientifically known as Lansium domesticum, are thickskinned fruits with a yellowish hue that are native to Southeast Asia. Tasting similar to a sweet grapefruit, lanzones flesh is usually eaten fresh. When dried, the fruit peels have medicinal and practical uses. The fruit peel of Lansium domesticum, var. pubescens (thicker than that one of the sweeter var. domesticum ) exudes a white sap/latex containing mosquito repelling triterpenes ( lansionic acid p.e. ). The dried peel is burned to this end and the white smoke should come from the sap and some remaining water. http://sg.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071118055744A ApEGzb

Around central and southern Philippines Lanzones fruit can be found easily. Aside from October, the fruit also has a season in March / April. http://www.thelongestwayhome.com/blog/food-around-theworld/filipino/food-from-the-philippines-lanzones-fruit/

Chapter III Methodology

First collect a kilo of lanzones peelings. Then let them dry under the sun for a week. Grind the peelings in mortar and pestle. Then mix a cup of starch and pulverized lanzones peelings. Add half cup of water to make a paste-like consistency. Now make a mold like a mosquito coil or get the mosquito coil along with the foil to use it as a mold. Let the mixture dry for a day. If the mosquito coil didnt burnt properly, you could increase the ratio of pulverized lanzones.
