esign aficionados fromaround the world
flock to a six-block stretch of Sacramento
Street in San Franciscos tony Presidio
Heights to visit a host of interiors shops
that are renowned for their expertly
curated collections, including Sue Fisher
King, Kendall Wilkinson Home, and Anthem.
To that impressive mix comes BaBoo, the brainchild of Galit
Chay. I grewup just outside Tel Aviv and knewat an early age
that I was attracted to the beautiful and the unique, recalls Chay.
When all of the other kids wanted to wear the same brands,
I was forever on the hunt for something very different, some-
thing unexpected.
That quest still drives Chay to this day. Now I finally have
a place to share my discoveries, she notes of BaBoo with its spare,
gallery-style space. Sprinkled throughout the boutique are glit-
tering, one-of-a-kind lamps and lighting fixtures that draw
passersby in droves. The fixtures combine elements of Oriental,
Baroque, and modern design. They are crafted by the artists Elie
Sagi and Billy Berger in Israel, notes Chay. Sagi and Berger regu-
larly visit Venice, Paris, Brussels, Milan, and Istanbul to seek out
high-quality materials, fromVenetian silk and glass to Swarovski
beads and exotic brass fixtures. Theyve developed special meth-
ods of printing customized abstract patterns, and the results are
extraordinary.

Once youve been dazzled by the lamps, your eyes
are drawn to whimsical wire sculptures, striking pho-
tographs, and bold chairs and stools in vibrant colors
with seats and backs crafted entirely from woven yarn.
These are some of my favorite pieces, admits Chay.
They are made by a firm called Gaga & Design. Their
team is always looking for the right balance between
beautiful objects and functional furniture, playing
with textile material and visual weight. Theyve taken
traditional Japanese weaving methods and improved
upon them. The versatile chairs can be used indoors
and out.
In addition to furnishings and art, Chay carries
an intimate selection of jewelry crafted in 18-karat
gold by Tovi Farber. I never take my Tovi ring
off, says Chay, who fell in love with the
designers pieces over a decade ago. They are
handcrafted and have an amazing textural
quality about them.
Chay likens a visit to BaBoo to a refreshing
journey off the main road. Think of the best trips when
you find a hidden gem of a street or a little alley with charming cafes
and sights. I want BaBoo to provide that wonderful feelingto be a
welcome surprise. www.baboosf.com N

INTERIOR DESIGN BY VERNON APPLEGATE OF
APPLEGATE TRAN INTERIORS, SAN FRANCISCO
ARCHITECTURE BY MARK BRAND ARCHITECTS, SAN FRANCISCO
LIGHTING DESIGN BY LUMINAE SOUTER ASSOCIATES,
SAN FRANCISCO
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTOPHER STARK, SAN FRANCISCO
A sophisticated Portola Valley
residence combines cutting-edge
looks with spacious family living.
HILLSIDE
HAVEN
Massive sliding doors
by Fleetwood open to the
beautiful hillside views.
W
hen the homeowners
first touredthis hillside
property in Portola
Valley, they fell in love with the view,
but that was about it, recalls architect
Mark Brand. The original home on the site had been built in the
80s, in a very contemporary style, but the quality of construction
was spotty and the finishes were poor, not to mentionenergy-inef-
ficient. Brand and his team were hired to rejuvenate the house
from top to bottom.
The first order of business was to open up the floor plan and
eliminate a greenhouse-style sunroom, which got so unbearably
hot as to be unusable, recalls Brand. We tore down walls and
completely demolished the sunroom, replacing it with a new
dining room open to the remodeled living room and kitchen.
Brand then added a new office and deck above
the new dining room, as well as a new master
suite. All of the exterior windows were replaced
many with sustainable aluminum sliding doors by Fleetwood.
Stainless steel and cable railings were added to the expansive new
decks. We didnt want the views to be blocked, explains Brand.
Interior designer Vernon Applegate of Applegate Tran Inte-
riors echoes Brands sentiment. The view is key to the homes
design. We were brought ontoward the end of the project to work
oninterior finishes and to select furnishings, notes Applegate. The
homeowners were at different ends of the design spectrumone
wanted drama while the other wanted to keep things classic and
neutral. We found compromise in keeping a fewselect bold pops
of color toward the bottom 24-inches of the individual spaces,
and keeping the palette clean and crisp above that. The result

centers on a sleek kitchen with

is that the view provides the real drama while
bold color pops keep things fun.
At the core of the newhouse is a great room
encompassing the kitchen, living, and dining
rooms. Applegate selected Outline cabinetry by Pedini in onyx.
The eco-friendly cabinets have an Asian-inspired feel with thin
aluminumstriping and a series of evenly spaced horizontal grooves
carved into the lacquered front surfaces, adding an architectural
touch. Countertops in a crisp white finish offer a counterpoint to
the rich black cabinetry.
Furnishings in the dining room and living room are easily
moved to allow for flexibility in entertaining, notes Applegate,
who surrounded a sleek Italian table by Calligaris with alternat-
ing red and gold resin chairs. A sectional sofa in charcoal is
embellished with touches of aubergine, and anarea rug inlime and
violet is topped by a glass coffee table. The
chrome arc lamp is a vintage find fromthe 70s,
the designer shares.
On the decks, terrific outdoor sofas, chairs,
and coffee tables by Walters Wicker (the go-to choice for patios
at elegant resorts like the St. Regis Bal Harbor) offer inviting
places to relax. Applegate included ottomans in lime and violet
to add interest and whimsy.
In contrast to the great room level, we kept the master suite
level very mutedits restful and almost spa-like with colors in
taupe, grey, and ivory, notes Applegate. To keep it interesting,
with a monochromatic palette, we placed emphasis on texture.
The resulting home is not only a showplace for thoughtful
design solutions, but also a family-oriented residence where each
space is utilized and appreciated fully. N

Suites at The Lodhi have a private terrace
and a panoramic view with the historic dome
of Humayans Tomb in the foggy distance.
The heated plunge pool is large enough for
brief laps, which can be followed by repose
on the cantilevered chaise lounge.
The Lodhi hotel site includes a large
sheltered swimming pool, tennis courts,
and outdoor spots for quiet reflection.
Guests often use the pool in the cool of
evening for refreshing laps.
A
nethereal Meier-modernnewhotel with
a serene garden setting and elegantly
delineated architecture is the new chic
place to stay in Delhi. Its The Lodhi,
just 3 years old, and already a favorite of
stylishyoung Delhi couples and interna-
tional travelers intent ongetting to know
the fast-changing and surprising newIndia.
Its also a favorite hotel for Silicon Valley talent, like art collec-
tor Komal Shah, a former Yahoo! exec whorecently joinedthe Asian
Art Museumboard. Topinterior designers like L.A.-basedMichael
S. SmithandJean-Louis Deniot of Paris landthere onbusiness trips.
The first impression of The Lodhi is of massive walls of carved
marble slabs deployed with precision and superb restraint. An
austere and highly refined architectural sensibility is at work here.
Pared down and gracefully delineated, the walls of honed ivory-
colored stone are reminiscent of the pale carved exterior walls of
the Taj Mahal.
India is always celebratory and ornate, and many travelers
arrive specifically to immerse themselves in the excitement of hal-
lucinogenic hues and the jangle of music and crowds.
The Lodhi is from another aesthetic: a modern-style sensibil-
ity, one that is truly Indian and poetic, without the razzle-dazzle.
The hotel architect and designer is AustralianKerry Hill, based
inSingapore and WesternAustralia. He is a master of his craft. The
Lodhi feels India-modern, but chic and 21st-century. Delhi with-
out a trace of nostalgia.
Hill notes that he referenced Indias great history of palaces and
temples and past building traditions through suggestion and asso-
ciationrather thanreplication, and through the reinterpretationof
indigenous building forms as opposed to mimicry.
We prefer to build upon what is there, and to contemporize
our understanding of what it canbe, says Hill. I thinkof our design
for The Lodhi as being current, but filtered through a sieve of tra-
ditional values.
At the light-filled limestone entrance, a large carved black
stone water basin is filled with brilliant orange marigolds. A but-
ler silently guides guests along anenfilade of silent hallways. Inthe
suite, a graceful bedroomhas anefficient series of adjacent wardrobes,
luggage stands, and dressing tableseverything in the right place.
The scent of fresh tuberoses wafts through the air.
The butler disappears and returns witha glass of fresh-squeezed
pomegranate juice, the ultimate Indianluxury. There are many other
treats in store.
The hotel is expertly and gracefully co-managed by New
Zealand-born former diplomat Robyn Bickford and her husband,
Manav Garewal. They pamper guests, opening up their Black
Book for special sources for cashmere shawls, finding rare tickets
for an event, and taking care of all details.
In each suite, through a tall shuttered door is a wide sheltered
stone terrace. Eachsuite has a heated plunge pool ona terrace thats
open to the fresh air. Privacy is perhaps the most precious travel
luxury, and The Lodhi feels like a private residence. There are no
obtrusive signs, and staff members greet guests by name.
The hotel is set on 6 acres, has 2 wings, 9 floors, 39 rooms, and
28 suites. And theres a panoply of restaurants, a hair salon, a lap
pool, and plunge poolsall sheltered by jaali screens to modulate
light and intense outdoor heat.
The dcor throughout has a very light andairy sensibility of mod-
ern Anglo-Indian, with dark exotic wood wall cabinets, bronze
bowls filled with pomegranates, stone bowls with fresh tuberose
blossoms, everything cohesively modern Indian. All furniture is
locally crafted.
The Lodhi, a favorite for auction houses and museum types,
recently partnered with the Apparao Galleries of Chennai to
showcase contemporary Indianart and sculpture around the hotel.
SharanApparao, the galleries founder and owner, curates a revolv-
ing collection.
The Lodhi is a dramatic property, and a haven in fast-paced
Delhi. I cant wait to return. N www.thelodhi.com

Sticky Buns
MAKES 12 BUNS
SCHNECKENDOUGH
This butter-rich sweet dough is used to
create spiral snail pastries, says Mitchell.
We use it for a lot of our other Danish-style
sweets, too. The idea behind schnecken
doughis tomake it the night before, soyou
can assemble and bake fresh rolls the next
morning. Like croissant dough, it is much
easier to handle when chilled, and you get
great results without the laminationprocess
that croissant dough requires. This recipe
makes about 2 pounds of dough.
SPONGE

or bread-machine) yeast
DOUGH

Cwhole milk
2 large eggs
2 t instant (also called quick-rising
or bread-machine) yeast
1 t fine sea salt
3 Cbread flour, as needed

6 Tunsalted butter, at roomtemperature
To make the sponge: The day before bak-
ing, combine the flour, water, and yeast in
a small bowl. Cover with plastic wrap. Let

bubbles, about 1hours.
To make the dough: Combine the sponge,
milk, eggs, yeast, and salt in the bowl of a
stand mixer. Affix the bowl to the mixer
and fit with the paddle. Mix on low speed

in 2 cups of the flour to make a sticky
dough. Turn off mixer, cover bowl with a
kitchentowel, andlet standfor 20minutes.
Mix the dough on medium-lowspeed,
gradually adding the sugar. Mix in enough
of the remaining flour tomake a soft dough
that cleans the sides of the bowl. Replace the
paddle with the dough hook. Knead on
medium-lowspeeduntil smoothandelas-
tic, about 8 minutes. Add the butter, 1
tablespoon at a time, letting the dough
absorbeachadditionbefore adding the next.
Knead until the dough is shiny, about 1
minute more. Turn out the dough onto a
lightly floured work surface. (To make by
hand, sprinkle 1 tablespoon of the sugar
over the dough in the bowl. Using floured
hands, pull upabout one-thirdof the dough,
stretching it about 10 inches, and fold over
the top of the dough. Flip the dough over
and repeat with another 1 tablespoon of
sugar. Repeat twicemore, flippingdoughand
working in the remaining sugar. Turn the
dough out onto a floured work surface.
Knead, addingflour as necessary, until dough
is supple, about 8 minutes. Dot the dough
with 1 tablespoon of butter and continue
kneadinguntil butter is absorbed. Doughwill
feel sticky, but donot addtoomuchflour to
compensate. Repeat withremaining butter,
kneading until dough is smooth and shiny.
Shape the dough into a thick rectangle.

Architect Charlie Barnett and Tucker worked
together to create this 10,000-square-foot
Georgian-style home. The living room

S
uzanne Tuckers design work is in a category by itself. Her impeccable taste
is matched only by her encyclopedic understanding of antiques, fabrics,
furnishings, lighting, andfinishes. Discerning individuals who appreciate design
at this extraordinary level often become Tucker clients for life, entrusting her
to decorate multiple homes for them. As a result, her portfolio reads like eye
candy. Thankfully for design aficionados, publisher Gianfranco Monacelli,
at Monacelli Press, convinced Tucker to share more of that portfolio in Suzanne Tucker Interi-
orsThe Romance of Design.
On the following pages, you will be treated to just a tiny bit of this luxurious coffee table
book. Tucker shared three projects fromthe book with us, including a sky-high condominium
at MillenniumTower in San Francisco, an English-style country manse on the Peninsula, and
her own stunning Marin home.
Notes Tucker in the forward to her newbook: My work begins with listening. I want to
hear frommy clients about their ideas of home, everyday living, personal desires, and dreams.
I amentrusted with their own distinctive tastes, their unique family lives, their particular pas-
sions, treasures, and happiness at home. She goes on to say, We laugh about the hats I wear:
detective, diplomat, coach, psychologist, marriage counselor, educator, peace-keeper, con-
fidant. But being privy to such personal information is an honor and a responsibility that I take
to heart and never lightly. This devotion to her clients and determination to fulfill their design
dreams is apparent in every image brilliantly captured by award-winning photographers
Edward Addeo, Matthew Millman, and Michael Venera.
As we evolve, our homes should as well, says Tucker. A house should be able to stand
beautifully bare, revealing to us graceful volumes, elegant proportions, and [light]. When a
house is overlaid withones personal collectionsart, furnishings, and accessoriesit canbecome
an expression of individuality and a vessel for memories, tangible and intangible. Ahouse can
be a lifelong romance, and we should find ourselves falling in love with our homes over and
over again.

some of her most exquisite projects to date.

These great California designers were practiced at revealing and
not concealing great views, emphasizes Turner.

adding softness to the minimal space.
Designing a sleek and pared-down modern space, I called upon my
training in classical architecture to correct proportions, resolve
details, and lend a composed air to the dcor, recalls Turner. Today,
the space has a sense of history but feels current and timeless.

Morgan mixes periods, styles, and colors in the dramatic
living room. Organic shapes and rich textures, from the

M
y client wanted something decidedly masculine, recalls Morgan,
whocarefully selecteda color palette of chocolate, navy, andcrim-
son for this contemporary Lake Tahoe home. Its built on the
grounds of the original Henry J. Kaiser estate, he notes. They
filmed The Godfather, Part II just steps away.
In the 80s, a developer tore down Kaisers manse and created
22 chateaux (including this one) facing the lake. Though 30 years old, the chateaux have won-
derful bones, including soaring ceilings, walls of windows, and stone fireplaces. Morgansought
to take advantage of all these elements and enhance them. We replaced floors, added mantles,
andguttedthe bathrooms, he says. Everything we didwas about enhancing the viewandmak-
ing the interiors inviting. We wanted guests to linger and not want to leave.
Morgan is acclaimed for his deft use of color and texture. The contemporary, sleek interiors
inthis project typify his expertise. We coveredthe walls inbeautiful papers craftedof cork, Capiz
shell, andmica, he notes. Marvelous rugs, including a major Tufenkianinthe living room, cover
the floors, while handmade chandeliers dazzle and glisten. Furniture pieces that double as
sculpture abound, the most striking of whichis a wovenhammockmade inTel Aviv that appears
to float by a window with jaw-dropping Tahoe views.
To enhance the masculine vibe, Morgan dressed a sofa in a charcoal pinstripe and a pair of
mid-century modernarmchairs innavy blue velvet. Acheckered chair inthe living roomis one
of Morgans favorite finds. I discovered it in a garden shop in the Hamptons, he recalls, and
I had it refinishedand painted withhigh-gloss automotive paint. The result is analmost ghostly,
surreal quality.
The striking dining roomis all about the massive fireplace, says Morgan. Anoval table echoes
the curve of the hearth, while a delicate light fixture of twigs and small pin lights adds contrast.
The master bedroomboasts views of the lake andforest. We usedFerragamo fabrics for the bed
linens, notes Morgan, and created custom bedside tables from rosewood and ebony. A pair
of club chairs, upholstered in navy mohair, finishes the space.

ABOUT
The Sustainable Alno Kitchen
Germanys premiere kitchen cabinet manufacturer Alno is renowned for its flawless contemporary
designs, but the company is also one of the greenest in the industry. Gentry Home speaks with Alno
expert Deganit Albalak to better understand the Alno difference.
GREEN FROM THE START
Since its inception in 1927, Alno has been
focused on the environment. The firm has been
so dedicated to green manufacturing that they won their
first award for exemplary Green practices in 1992, long
before the building industry started discussing
environmentally safe products. Currently, Alno prides
itself in using absolutely no formaldehyde in its products.
The company also has a zero emissions policy from its
factory. Their motto is: good for the environment, good
for people.
1
BEAUTY AND LONGEVITY
Alno kitchens are more than just gorgeous, they are
often timeless. The thought, quality, and attention to
detail that goes into the planning of an Alno kitchen ensures
that the cabinets will function as beautifully as they look. The
result is that Alno kitchens last longer. Notes Deganit Albalak,
We recently had a customer stop in who had an Alno kitchen
installed in 1976. She was looking for new door pulls
(interestingly, not because the originals had worn out, but
because she felt like changing them). She stressed that the
kitchen looked as beautiful as it did the day it was installed.
5
SUSTAINABLE WOOD
Wood used by Alno is sourced from managed
and sustainable forests. All waste, created
during production, is either reconstituted into new
materials or used as fuel to heat the factory. This
reduces the waste dramatically and timber resources
are used to maximum capacity. The air is kept clear
from harmful particles to protect the factory workers
and their surroundings. This is particularly important for
a wood processing plant. To that effect, the grind and
saw dust that is constantly produced is drawn from the
air using a high power air filtering system.
2
PACKAGING AND
LOGISTICS
In packaging, polystyrene is avoided as much
as possible and cardboard is used instead, which is
easily disposable and has a neutral ecological effect as
it is recyclable. Environmental measures are also
applied in logistics: Comprehensive tour and load
planning ensures that the shortest and most efficient
possible route is chosen.
3
RECYCLABLE MATERIALS
ALNO factories and products are continually
evolving, so most of the materials in an Alno
kitchen are made from materials that can be recycled
in the future.

ABOUT
Closets
Many homeowners dream of having the perfect closet, but it takes a closet expert to make it happen.
Gentry Home speaks with expert Uri Rosenberg of Closet Factory about the latest innovations avail-
able in closet design.
TAKE STOCK
When planning a custom closet, a closet expert
will first measure the space. The next step is for
the client to inventory every piece of clothing and
pair of shoes and ask his/herself if theres anything
that could move out (for instance: suitcases)? Is
there anything that should move in? Do you want
your necklaces next to your clothes? There are many
options for shelves, drawers, and custom storage
solutions. For instance, shelves behind cabinet doors
provide plenty of space for folded jeans, sweaters, and
shirts. A belt rack on the inside of the cabinet door
doubles as a necklace organizer. Drawers with locks can
store fine jewelry. But to incorporate those storage
solutions properly, an inventory of clothes and
accessories is key.
1
TRENDING NOW
One of the biggest movements in wardrobe management is
closet curationa deliberate rejection of excess as it
pertains to the wardrobe. As a part of that trend, the walk-in closet
or reach-in closet becomes less like a storage unit, often crammed
full and visually hectic. Instead, hand-selected clothing,
accessories, and shoes actually becomes part of the closets
aesthetic whole.
More than just a fancy way of saying I need to get rid of my
junk, curation, in its highest form, is a consciousness of how and
why we wear the clothes we have. Usually, it involves taking steps
to distill our wardrobe down to only the best-loved and highest-
value pieces. The new luxury is now to be able to live and thrive
with a small, pleasurable wardrobe.
5
WOODWORK AND FINISHES
A client also needs to consider the finish used in
the closet. Do they want to match the woodwork
presently existing in other parts of the home?
When a designer from Closet Factory visits a
clients home, they come prepared with a proprietary
design case that features a portfolio of our complete line
of products, sample cases of our materials, specialty
item offerings, and tear sheets of a complete range of
accessory selections. They also bring along an Idea
Book of Closet Factory designs and installations to
ensure that we not only help create the right storage
solution for your space but have added design
inspiration to your project as well.
2
FLOOR STANDING UNITS
VS. WALL HANGING UNITS
Floor-based systems look more like a piece of
furniture, so they are often more aesthetically pleasing.
Structurally, they are stronger and offer more versatility
and adjustability. Wall hanging units dont offer as much
adjustability or flexibility due to construction limitations.
And they do not offer as much stability and durability
as floor-standing units.
3
MORE THAN WALK-IN CLOSETS
Just because a closet is not a walk-in closet, doesnt
mean that it cannot be constructed to better utilize the
space to meet a clients needs. The secret is to use the height of a
reach-in closet. That way, even a small closet can result in drasti-
cally increased storage space.

Custom Gates
Gates not only offer security and protection, but they make an important design statement.
Gates are, essentially, the first impression a guest has of your property. Gentry Home caught up
with gate and fencing expert Isela Moreno of Creative Gates in Redwood City to discuss gate
options available today.
YOUR PROPERTY
When designing a fence and gate system,
notes Moreno, our design team assesses your
property and then, given the type of use, your
exposure to the elements, and budget, determines the
best possible materials to be used in the project.
1
MAINTENANCE
We are committed to client satisfaction, adds
Moreno. We offer maintenance services on all of our
products, and if an accident should happen, our metal works
team can make repairs.
5
DESIGN
If you can dream it, we can build it, says
Moreno. We encourage clients to research
gates and styles and to look through our portfolios
for options. Our design team will offer several ideas
to best complement their property.
2
ALUMINUM VS.
WROUGHT-IRON
While our team at Creative Gates is expert at
all types of metal work, notes Moreno, aluminum
gates and fences are our top sellers for a variety of
reasons: aluminum is a sustainable resource, its
lighter than wrought-iron and steel, it doesnt rust, and
it simply out-performs other metals in virtually every
application. It can also be painted and finished to
resemble wood, making the design options limitless.
3
ATTENTION TO DETAIL
We are proud of our work at Creative
Gates, stresses Moreno. We finish our
gates with the utmost care. You will not see
imperfections in our metal work. We also take
great steps to make the installation as flawless as
possible, concealing mechanism boxes, cables,
and photo sensors from view.

ABOUT
Hardwood Floors
One of the most beautiful and important investments you can make in your home is installing hard-
wood flooring. Gentry Home speaks with flooring expert Michael Pinnock of Floor Coverings
International in Palo Alto to discuss the keys to selecting the right floor for your needs.
YOUR FLOOR
When selecting hardwood floor, there are a
number of factors to consider; including finish
type, species of wood, how you will use the flooring, and
of course where it will be installed, notes Pinnock. For
example whether you are installing the floor over
concrete or plywood might play a part in your selection,
and the cost of your project.
1
BAMBOO AND EXOTIC
HARDWOODS
Bamboo flooring has a low impact on the environment
while still maintaining a quality level that is comparable to other
hardwoods. It is classified as a sustainable flooring product
because it has a much higher regrowth rate than timber. Pinnock
suggests selecting bamboo flooring if you are looking for a
contemporary, earth-friendly, easy-to-clean alternative to traditional
hardwood. He adds, but be sure it is properly sealed to prevent
scratching and scuffs.
Exotic African and South American hardwood species offer
some of the most luxurious looks in hardwood flooring, with
spectacular colors and patterns and impressive durability. Floor
Coverings International carries some of the most beautiful exotic
hardwoods available.
5
OPTIONS, OPTIONS,
OPTIONS
Hardwood floors include engineered options,
solid hardwood, and exotic hardwoods and
bamboo, all of which have advantages and
disadvantages, so its important to consult a flooring
expert to understand what will be ideal for the
application you have in mind. Its also important to
understand coatings. When first applied, all coatings
look terrific. But not all coatings are created equal.
Some, like typical urethane products, degrade quickly,
which can lead to costly repair and replacement. Others,
like high-quality oils, can infuse your hardwood with rich
color and shine, and, with proper maintenance, can
increase the beauty and longevity of your floor.
2
SOLID HARDWOOD
One advantage of solid hardwood flooring is
that it can be repaired very easily, with regular
maintenance says Pinnock. Solid hardwood (like oak,
maple, and mesquite) can be sanded and refinished
many times without losing quality, so you dont have to
worry as much about scuffs and scrapes. Also, solid
hardwood will age naturally and beautifully as the years
go by. However, it is susceptible to moisture and heat
damage. It can expand and contract, depending on
heat and humidity conditions. Its available in many
species of wood, and is available in unfinished (finished
onsite with multiple coats of oil or urethane) and
prefinished.
3
ENGINEERED HARDWOOD
Engineered hardwood floors are also easily repaired.
They, too, may be sanded and refinished multiple times.
And engineered hardwood refers to the fact that a top layer of
hardwood (for example, oak, maple, mesquite, or exotic wood) is
bonded to cris-crossing layers of plywood to promote strength and
stability. Because of this bonding, engineered hardwood is much
more resistant to heat and humidity. Floor Covering International
carries a wide variety of exquisite engineered hardwood, including
Artistry Hardwood Flooring that is crafted of German white oak
and has the added advantage of color that runs throughout the
board so that scuffs and scratches are less noticeable. Oil high-
lights the wood better vs. urethane.

ABOUT
Fine Rugs
Gentry Home speaks with Stephen Miller, owner of Stephen Miller Gallery in Menlo Park, one of
the industrys most respected experts on fine Oriental and contemporary rugs, about what every
client should know about selecting the right rug for their needs.
PREPARATION IS KEY
I always tell clients that they shouldnt wait until
they need a rug to look for one, says Miller.
Its a real benefit to visit a rug showroom at the
beginning of a design project. The rug serves as the
base of a visual hierarchy in a roomit can impact the
mood of the room.
1
CUSTOM POSSIBILITIES
Of course there are many one-of-a-kind rugs, but
consumers should know that in todays hand-made rug
world, there are myriad custom options as well, says Miller.
Addressing size and color issues is daunting if we limit
ourselves to whats in stock. Working with a dealer who can
reliably deliver the right custom rug is often the best option.
5
BRING INSPIRATION
Dont visit a showroom empty handed. Be
sure to bring paint chips, fabric samples, and
measurements or floor plans, stresses Miller. Its
also key to have an understanding of how the room
will be used.
2
A COMMON MISTAKE
Many people say, Ive just spent a lot of
money on these floors, I dont want to cover
them up, notes Miller. This can often lead to the
purchase of a rug thats too small for the space. In
fact, a rug thats too small can visually truncate a
space, while a large rug makes a space seem larger.
In all of my years in business, Ive never had a client
come back and say I purchased a rug thats too big.
But they often return saying it was too small.
3
FOCUS ON COLOR
AND TRY IT OUT
You can mix more styles than you would
expect if youve got the color story right, notes
Miller. Color flow from room to room is critical in
the design process. To really get a feel for the color,
you should take the rug home for a trial. Reputable
dealers will encourage you to take a rug home to
see how it will work in your space.

ABOUT
Transparent Glass Coatings
The innovations in window coatings are incredible. Long gone are the days when protective film
meant a reflective, mirror-like look. Todays coatings are crisp and clear with incredible advantages
for energy efficiency. Gentry Home spoke with window coatings expert Eileen Hansen of
Transparent Glass Coatings in Monterey to discuss the benefits of this important product.
SUN PROTECTION
Many customers ask if they can get sun
protection with a window coating without the tint,
notes Hansen. The answer is yes. The transparent
films available today look completely natural, not like
mirrors. Interiors are protected without compromising
curb appeal.
1
LONGEVITY AND CARE
Window films from Transparent Glass Coatings come with
a lifetime warranty on workmanship and materials, says
Hansen. Caring for them is as simple as caring for regular
windows. The coatings all have a scratch-resistant surface, so they
actually have the same hard surface as glass and may be washed
in the same way.
5
LOW-E WINDOWS VS.
WINDOW FILM
Low-E windows were designed primarily to
save heat loss in the winter months. They
actually do nothing to cool down your house,
and in our experience, the amount of ultraviolet (UV)
rejection is usually around 56%, notes Hansen.
Window films stop 99.9% of UV and up to 97% of
infrared, the two major causes of fading fabrics, rugs,
and furniture.
2
BEAT THE HEAT
Californians know that the sun can be brutal at
times, and depending on the exposure of your
home, it can significantly heat your interiors, stresses
Hansen. New cutting-edge technology has made
ceramic coatings possible in window film. These films
are constructed from highly specialized materials that
greatly deflect the suns ultraviolet rays while
maintaining a complimentary natural look. They also cut
heat dramatically, allowing the home to stay cool in the
summer months (often reducing heat by up to 10
degrees). Outdoor views are optimized as well, leaving
the homeowner with a crystal clear view without the
glare or heat.
3
SINGLE PANE CONUNDRUM
Customers with single-pane windows often experience
heat loss in winter and wonder if they should replace their
windows with double panes, notes Hansen. A more cost-efficient
method is to add high-tech window film that can save up to 50%
of heat loss through the windows. It performs as well as most dou-
ble-pane window installations without having to throw away your
old windows and replace them.

ABOUT
Jerusalem Stone
Beautiful limestone from Jerusalem has been used as a building material in Israel, the Middle East,
and throughout Europe for over 3,000 years. Gentry Home speaks with Carmel Stone Imports
owner Robbie Robinsonthe largest importer of Jerusalem stone in the United Statesto discover
the intracacies of this important stone.
MANY COLORS
Robinson journies to Israel and Palestine twice
a year to source Jerusalem Stone from quarries
that have been in continual use for thousands of
years. The stone, which comes in four different colors
ranging from ivory and beige to grey and gold, is
renowned for its durability and incredible aesthetic.
1
HALILA
Robinsons Carmel Stone Imports carries all four
varieties of Jerusalem stone at his showrooms in
Palo Alto, Carmel, and Monterey. The popular Halila
limestone features a soft beige hue and works beautifully in
contemporary and traditional settings, and is suitable for all
interior and exterior applications.
5
JERUSALEM GOLD
The Old City and New City of Jerusalem are
both clad in this richly colored stone. Its pale
golden hue lends a warm glow, making it an elegant
and durable choice for interior and exterior flooring
and walls, kitchen counters, bath vanities and
backsplashes, and shower walls. It is available in
tumbled and honed finishes in a wide variety of slab
and tile sizes, mosaics, and moldings.
2
JERUSALEM TAUPE
(GREY/GOLD)
Jerusalem Taupe is the sister stone of
Jerusalem Gold, quarried from the same area near
Jerusalem. This elegant stone boasts a natural taupe
color with some unique fossilization. Similar to
Jerusalem Gold it is perfect for all interior and
exterior uses.
3
JERUSALEM PEARL
(PEBBLE BEACH)
Sourced from a small quarry in Bethlehem,
Jerusalem Pearl is prized for its consistent cream color. It is
available in honed and tumbled finishes and a large variety of
slabs, tiles, and mosaics. As with Jerusalem Gold and Taupe,
this very popular stone is perfect for all interior and exterior
applications.
