Read the passage and answer the following questions: Most of us know talc only in the forms of body powder. But talc has many important uses. Talc is a mineral the softest known to man. It can be scratched easily with a fingernail. It is made of tiny flakes, or scales of magnesium. Talc may be silvery white or even a delicate green. When talc is in solid form it is called soapstone. In this form it is usually greyish or greenish in colour, and is very soft and greasy to the touch. Often it has brown spots. The best quality talc comes from Piedmon, Italy. There are also deposits in England, Canada, Germany, Zimbabwe etc. Along the Atlantic Coast in the United States, there is more talc than in all the rest of the world. Talc resists ordinary heat so well and it can be easily shaped. So the soapstone is often used in the making of household articles. For this reason it is sometimes called potstone. Cooking utensils and parts of stoves are sometimes made from it. Laundary tubs and sinks are also made from soapstone. Soapstone hardens at high temperatures, and so is used for lining furnaces. Slabs of soapstone are used as acid tanks in laboratories, as it cannot easily be eaten away. It is a poor conductor of electricity and can be used as the base for switch boards and electrical insulation.

Read the passage and answer the question that follows. Oil originated in the sea. This statement is confirmed if we look at a map showing the chief oilfields of the world. Very few of them are far distant from the oceans of today. The rocks in which oil is found were also formed in the sea. They are called sedimentary rocks. These are the rocks which were formed on the bed of ocean by mud, sand, gravel, etc. Almost always the remains of shells, and other proofs of sea life, are found close to the soil. A very common sedimentary rock is called shale, which is a soft rock and was obviously formed by being deposited on the seabed. The oil found in natural state is called crude oil. It is treated in refineries. The most common form of treatment is heating. When crude oil is heated, the first vapours to rise are cooled and become the finest petrol. Gas that comes off the oil later is condensed into paraffin (also called kerosene). It is used as a fuel in heaters and lamps. Last of all the lubricating oils of various grades are produced.
