Christ the King Mission Statement
The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

What does it mean to have a Mass "offered" for someone?

Continued from last week.. When a priest offers Holy Mass, he has three intentions: First, to offer the Mass reverently and validly in accord with the norms of the Church. Second, to offer the Mass in union with the whole Church and for the good of the whole Church. Third, to offer the Mass for a particular intention, such as the repose of the soul of someone who has died. Therefore, the effects of the Mass bring certain benefits or fruits. The general fruits of the Mass are the effects upon the whole Church to the living faithful as well as the poor souls in purgatory. For this reason, in the Canon of the Mass (the Eucharistic Prayer), a special mention is made for both the living and the dead. The special ministerial fruits of the Mass are applied to the particular intention of the Mass, i.e. "for whom the Mass is offered." The special personal fruits of the Mass benefit the celebrating priest who acts in the person of Christ in offering the Mass and to the people who are in attendance and participate in the offering of the Mass. These fruits are both extensively and intensively finite, since each of us is finite. Therefore, the more a Mass is offered, the more benefit is conferred. For example, all things being equal, 10 Masses offered for the repose of a soul confer 10 times the benefit of one Mass. The intention of the Mass is also determined by various factors: The Church may stipulate the particular intention; for example, all pastors are required to offer one Mass on Sunday for the intentions of the living and deceased parishioners of a parish. A priest may also have his own particular intention in offering a Mass, such as the repose of the soul of his parents. Finally, a person may ask a priest to offer a Mass for a particular intention; usually, a stipend is given to the priest for offering the Mass, which thereby in justice creates an obligation which must be satisfied. We find not only the origins of this practice dating to the early Church but we also clearly recognize its importance. When we face the death of someone, even a person who is not Catholic, to have a Mass offered for the repose of his soul and to offer our prayers are more beneficial and comforting than any other sympathy card or bouquet of flowers. To have a Mass offered on the occasion of a birthday, anniversary or special need is appropriate, beneficial and appreciated. - ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

LORD HAVE MERCY (KYRIE ELEISON)

The presence of the Kyrie or the "Lord have mercy" has a long and complex history. As early as the fourth century this acclamation was used in the east as the people's response to every petition in a litany. An intention was announced by the deacon, and the congregation gave this standard response. The pattern continued till the end of the litany. Pope Gelasius (492 -496) substituted such an eastern form with its Greek response for an older type of intercessory prayer at the conclusion of the liturgy of the word. This new litany with its Kyrie was then transferred to the beginning of the Mass. Pope Gregory the Great (590-604), desirous of shortening the Mass, allowed the intentions of the litany to be omitted on certain days with only the response being sung. This abbreviated litany eventually became the rule. The number of three Kyries, three Christes, and three further Kyries was fixed in Frankish countries and provided the basis for a Trinitarian interpretation. However, in the New Testament and especially in St. Paul the word Kyrios refers to Christ and indicates his divinity.

Jeremiah Day April 5, 2014 at Mundelein Seminary

This is for young men in grades 7-10. It is an opportunity to see this beautiful seminary and experience what life is like there through the eyes of our current seminarians. There is a modest $5 fee to help with the cost of food. Donuts and bagels will be provided for breakfast and lunch is provided at the seminary cafeteria. It is an eye-opening experience for all who attend. Parents are most welcome to stay with their sons as well. God bless, Fr. Peter and Sherry Rochford

A Lenten Service Project Christ the King Parish

The time is ripe to truly embrace our faith and our call to be good stewards of the environment and of each other. Doing so will lead to a deeper understanding of our journey toward wholeness. As Christ demonstrated in his journey to the cross, learning to give all of ourselves through relationship with others and the world gives way to our hope realized in resurrection, new life and the fullness of life. The Water For Life project has been an inspiring, collaborative effort between the National Council of Catholic Women and Catholic Relief Services. As a Parish Community, we have chosen to take on this project together. Money donated will provide clean and sanitary drinking water to places that have none. Let us always remember to thank God for the water we have and to conserve this most precious resource. Let us remember in prayer those who do not have water at the turn of a faucet. The donation bottles are located in the narthex of the church near the water fountain and in the Academy building for both Religious Education and Early Learning Academy families.

. . .I wish to mention another threat to peace, which arises from the greedy exploitation of environmental resources. Even if nature is at our disposition, all too often we do not respect it or consider it a gracious gift which we must care for and set at the service of our brothers and sisters, including future generations. ~ Pope Francis

Thank you to all parishioners for your very generous contributions!

Thank you to all who have donated toward the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal. If you have not had a chance to make your contribution, please consider doing so next weekend. We will conduct the in-pew pledging process one last time to give everyone an opportunity to participate. One pledge can make a difference, especially when combined with all of the other pledges made throughout the diocese. Please prayerfully consider providing your financial support to this appeal. You can and will make a difference. Through March 7 we are 1/3 the way to our parish goal. If we exceed our goal, Christ the King will get a rebate of 60% of the amount collected over our goal. Thank you for your prayerful and generous response. Parish Finance council
