Class: French 3 Instructor: M.Wood Textbook: Discovering French Nouveau!

Rouge 3 Week: 19 Day: D Duration: 45 minutes Learners will be able to: -distinguish appropriate question word -pose a question using the proper word order -recognize the different situations for each form They need: -better understanding of the use of tu vs vous -exposure to a voice besides the teachers and mechanical textbook -practice in how to form a question in the L2 Duration: Time: 10:00 8:288:38 9:219:31 11:5612:06

Objectives/Functions: -recall and rehearse all possible question words -identify the three options for forming a question -compose questions accurately based on prompt

They know: This lesson intends in part to take students back to basics by rehearsing words used in French to form a question and verifying that they can perform with increasing accuracy while using an appropriate form within the context. They enter this level with the ability to create complete sentences and spell some of the more complicated question words but have demonstrated weakness in recognizing the difference in question formation and in register. Activities, Procedures, and Outcomes:

1. Warm-up practicing question word vocab (I would normally allow about 5 minutes for a warm-up, but since well have to deal with logging on to laptops and a variety of activity options, I am going to extend that time.) http://quizlet.com/35440122/question-words-en-francais-flash-cards/ 2. Listening exercise (dicte+) (This activity works in between a video on YouTube and a Quia practice, Jeopardy-style. I am showing the video on the Smartboad while students work on a laptop, repeating each sentence three times, then pausing for them to answer questions before the speaker's final, detailed explanation. Copy responses in journal.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytdOi1CHh-0 http://www.quia.com/cb/859563.html (Part 1) http://www.quia.com/cb/859566.html (Part 2)

3. Reflection activity (Students will be given a Post-It, on which they write their final score in the Jeopardy activity as well as the level of question that was the easiest/most difficult. They will use one of the question words not seen in the second activity in order to ask their partner a question.) HMWK: As a follow-up, students will be given a paper with those same sentences (10) from the listening drill to put in the past and future tenses, forming questions with increasing complexity due to the use of aller and avoir/tre to be reviewed the following day.

Materials/Technology needed: teacher laptop+Smartboard for YouTube instructional video student laptops to participate in Quia activity student journals for copying examples handout of 10 questions for hmwk Rationale/Alternatives: This year, we invited a friend of mine from Haiti to Skype with any interested French students, Club members and friends during National French Week. In preparation for such a task, I asked my Level 3s to write 25 questions of interest to them knowing only that this was a friend of mine who is a native French speaker. Sadly, the return was rather disastrous. Some used a good variety of vocabulary, but the word order and constant switch between tu and vous wore me out in grading. I had considered a more dry self-correction method, but I think incorporating the hands-on approach with less lecture from the teacher will be more memorable and beneficial. When weve finished with the past and future tenses in questions I am also shining the light on the use of quel versus quest-ce que as it proved to be one of the most common mistakes in their writing.
