Travel Through Time

In July 1749, George Washington noted in his journal, in the Blue Ridge Mountains I laid off a town. Founded in 1796, Washington is the county seat and home to the five-star, five-diamond The Inn at Little Washington. Other country inns situated in and around the town offer a variety of accommodations. A mercantile, caf and coffee shop offer light fare, and outside the town, a country inn offers fine dining set against the backdrop of Shenandoah National Park. Washington is home to shops, galleries, theaters and a wellness center. The village of Sperryville is located along the picturesque Thornton River, near the entrance to Shenandoah National Park. Founded in 1820, the village is known for its old-time charm. Visit artist studios and galleries, a farmers cooperative, a whiskey distillery and antiques warehouse at the River District. At the Sperryville Schoolhouse, find antiques, home dcor, a yarn shop that offers knitting classes and a pub. Sperryville is a popular dining spot that offers lodging at inns, B&Bs and cottages. Catch live music at one of several venues. The quaint village of Flint Hill is reached by several byways that wind through the countryside. The village offers restaurant and pub dining, live entertainment, shops and lodging at a historic country inn and at an elegant country manor in the rolling hills of Huntly. Rappahannock County has a rich Civil War history. As a gateway to the northern Shenandoah Valley, Rappahannock was a major thoroughfare for Union and Confederate forces on a number of occasions.
