Pender United Methodist Church Council Meeting February 19, 2014

WORSHIP AND COMMUNION KT Tarro called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm. Beth Dougherty led the group in a devotion followed with prayer. The scripture Beth used was Prover s !":!#3. $ouncil mem ers were commended for living out this scripture y coming together as a team to plan the udget% listening to the &oly 'pirit% and trusting in (od to ta)e the right path. CELEBRATION MOMENTS $heryl *o+ley shared that the luncheon held to cele rate the ,nited *ethodist *an of the -ear and .omen of the -ear was successful and well attended. Karen $ross said that the course% &ow to 'tudy the Bi le% was very successful and well attended. / second course is already underway and a asic Bi le study class is coming up. Pastor Kevin mentioned that a men0s small group was formed y a new servant and it is already growing. De ie *cKamey mentioned that there have een several new mem ers 1oin the church in the past two months. Pastor Kevin said the we site has een updated and redesigned y *ary 20$onnor. PRAYERFUL CONSIDERATION OF CHURCH MATTERS: MINISTRY PRIORITIES IN LIGHT OF CURRENT FISCAL SITUATION Review of Upcomi ! During this session% the group will focus on: .hat resources are availa le &ow resources are used &ow can the ministry areas determine if they are succeeding in their goals &ow we share information with others Best way to tell our story as a result of these efforts Pender is very good at announcing what we are planning to do% ut we don0t always follow through with the outcome. This may e in large part due to the fre?uent messages provided y 7loyd 5ollins to the congregation a out stewardship. Pastor Kevin also mentioned that more servants are stepping forward to serve.

P$o!$,m 37eyla Bec)er4 To etter e?uip leaders% a 8#hour leadership training course has een scheduled for *arch 6% @% and !" from noon until 8 pm. At is recommended that all ministry and cluster leaders attend one of these classes and notify 7eyla which session they will attend. 7unch will e served and training will ta)e place in the $ornerstone 5oom. / leadership mentoring class will e held on *arch 30. Buarterly gatherings will e held to allow leaders to networ) with others. The first session is scheduled for *ay !:. Se$v, # Nee-" i Mi i"#$% 37eyla Bec)er4 7eyla held the first 'erve (od cluster meeting 6 wee)s ago. The cluster will e comprised of 3 groups: servant recruitment and encouragement% leadership training% and servant recognition. 7isted elow are some of the cluster0s plans: $lusterCcommittee leaders will e as)ed to identify servant needs that can either e an ongoing need or a short one#time need. / data ase will e developed y *ary 20$onnor and /manda $urtis identifying people with specific s)ills ased on a short survey that will e availa le online shortly. /n information sheet was circulated at the meeting for each clusterCcommittee leader to identify servant needs and to provide a contact person. 5ecognition of servants will e done on a monthly asis 3possi ly a rea)fast format4. /n annual an?uet for servant recognition is also proposed. 5ich Taddeo mentioned ideas for highlighting ministries to the congregation. 2ne e+ample% called *inistry 'potlight% would involve taping short 6#minute presentations a out ministries and encouraging people to 1oin. These taped presentations would then e placed on -ouTu e. The cluster will need someone with the s)ill set to tape these presentations. Re ov,#io Commi##ee Ac#ivi#ie" 3*i)e Dingman4 /n architectural company that is ministry driven and wor)s e+clusively with churches will e meeting with the committee tomorrow night% 9e ruary 60. There are two phases to the renovation. The first is to prioritiDe what needs to e done to the uilding and the second phase is to e+plore the EgrowthF portion of our renovations. There was much discussion on the process to e ta)en and the type of information to e provided to this company. An order to raise the funds% there must e a clearly thought#out strategic plan and vision on what direction our church should ta)e and where we see our church in G% !0% or 60 years. Demographic studies of our community will help in this process. KT as)ed the &ang Together Team to coordinate with the 5enovation $ommittee to ensure that Pender has coordinated information ready for the selected company. 01*3401*5 F,i#. P$omi"e Mi""io B2-!e# 3Dave 'huping4 > refer to handout Dave presented the proposed udget to $ouncil with the following e+planations: The udget cycle for the *issions $ommittee is =une 60!8 to *ay 60!G. There are !: mem ers on the committee who meet once a month and corporately put the udget together. 9eed ac) from the various organiDations supported y this committee are received and reviewed. Based on funds received from the congregation% payments are first made to the individuals or organiDations identified in (roup /% then (roup B% and finally (roup $. Af sufficient funds are not collected as pledged% there is a reserve fund to cover any shortfalls in the udget. Af reserve funds are not ade?uate% cuts in the amounts given or other actions will e ta)en. 'hort Term *ission (rants are funds set aside for individuals from Pender who re?uest assistance with travel e+penses. The *issions $ommittee provides !C3 of the costsH another !C3 of cost is

provided y either the ,nited *ethodist *en or ,nited *ethodist .omenH and the final !C3 of the cost is provided y the individual going on the trip. *en of Ialor is a new organiDation added to the udget this year. Ats focus is local support for men y ringing men into the church% especially overseas. 3An some societies% women and children primarily attend church and the men do not.4 Through training courses% men will e encouraged to attend church with their families. 'anctity of 7ife is still provided funds y the Pender. Their charter was reviewed and the committee agreed that this organiDation was in compliance with the goal of 9aith Promise to ring people to $hrist.
