Directions:

Using smaller circular needle, CO (88) 96 sts. PM and join for knitting in the round. Work in 1x1 twisted rib for 1 inches. (NOTE: Twisted rib = *K1 tbl, P1, repeat from * to end of round). Change to larger circular needles and increase as follows: *K2, M1, repeat from * to end of round. Knit even until hat measures 2.5 inches from cast on edge then begin eyelet pattern as follows: Row 1: *YO, K2tog, repeat from * around Row 2: Knit Row 3: *YO, SKP, repeat from * around Row 4: Knit Repeat eyelet pattern once more (or until eyelet insert is as wide as you want it to be) then knit even until hat measures 5.5 from the cast on edge. NOTE: If you want to make a bigger hat to accommodate longer hair or dredlocks, knit until body of hat measures 6-9 from cast on edge. Begin decreasing as follows. Remember to change to DPNs when knitting in the round on circular needles becomes difficult. Note: for floppier hat, work even for 6 rounds (approx. 1 inch) between decrease rounds instead of 4 rounds: Decreases: Decrease round 1: decrease 2 stitches once at the beginning of the round and once about halfway through the round. Work even for 4 rounds. Decrease round 2: *K2, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round. Work even for 4 rounds Decrease round 3: *K1, K2tog, repeat from * around. Work even for 4 rounds Decrease round 4: *K2tog, repeat from * around. Work even for 2 rounds Decrease round 5: *K2tog, repeat from * around. Work even for 2 rounds Decrease round 6: Repeat round 5. Knit 1 round even. Finishing: Repeat round 6 until 4-6 stitches remain. Place all remaining stitches on 1 DPN and knit in I-cord for 3. Bind off. Weave in all ends. Tie I-cord into a knot. Alternate ending (without top knot): End with round 5 or 6. Cut yarn and pull tail through remaining stitches. Pull tight. Weave in ends. You can wear hat as is or add a bill, if desired, for a funky twist: Add bill as follows (based on Rasta Hat also designed by Shannita Williams-Alleyne for Knitty Gritty): Row 1: Using smaller circular needles pick up and knit 21 stitches at center front of hat (one st in each cast on st). Row 2: Purl

Row 3: K2, M1, PM, K17, PM, M1, K2, pick up next 2 sts from cast on row. Row 4: Purl to end, pick up 2 more sts from cast on row purlwise Row 5: K to marker, M1, Slip marker, 17 center sts, slip marker, M1, knit to end, pick up next 2 sts from cast on row knitwise Row 6: Purl to end, pick up 2 more sts from cast on row purlwise Repeat rows 5 and 6 until bill measures 2 from center (if you want a wider/longer bill, repeat rows 5 and 6 until bill is desired width/length). Next row: (RS) Purl 1 row (turning row) Next row: (WS) BO first two stitches, slip first stitch before binding off rather than purling it. Purl to end. Next row: (RS) BO first two stitches, slipping first stitch before BO instead of knitting it. Knit to 2 stitches before marker, SSK, Slip marker, knit next 17 stitches, slip marker, K2tog knit to end. Repeat last 2 rows until 19 stitches remain. BO remaining 19 stitches. Sew bill facing to inside of band. To make bill stiff, you can cut a piece of plastic mesh, cardboard or buckram and insert it in the brim before sewing it together. However, I prefer to skip this step. The doubled fabric of the brim usually stands up well.
