BOB'S BRASS SCORPION - INTRODUCTION

BOB'S B

RASS SCORPION - INTRODUCTION Bob Weiss is a long time 40K general with well over six thousand points worth of Chaos Space Marines. Needless to say, Bob's favorite army was Apocalysized long before the Apocalypse book came out. Once Bob got a peek of the Brass Scorpion Data Sheet he knew it was time for his army to grow even larger. Bob has now completed three (yes three!) Brass Scorpions, giving each one slightly different details and weapons. What follows is the method Bob used to build one of his ferocious Daemon Engines. TOOLS Plastic Glue Super Glue Sprue Clippers Razor Saw Hobby Knife Files Sand Paper Pin Vice and Drill Bits REQUIRED MATERIALS 2 Defiler Boxed Sets 1 Length of Brass Rod OPTIONAL MATERIALS 1 Empire Volley Gun Boxed Set 1 Imperial Guard Tank Accessory Sprue

BOB'S BRASS SCORPION - STAGE ONE: THE HULL

Step 1: Assemble Two Hulls Assemble both hulls from the Defiler box sets as normal. File all mold line and areas where the halves do not match perfectly. Enlarge Photo Step 2: Cut the First Hull Using a razor saw, cut the first hull more or less in half as shown. The cut should be just in front of the box structure that the rear hatch goes on. Enlarge Photo Step 3: Clean Up the Cut The rear half of the hull should look something like this after cutting. Use a hobby knife and some sandpaper to clean up the saw cut edge. Enlarge Photo Step 4: Trim the Back of Each Hull Using a razor saw, trim a small portion off of the back of each hull. The goal is to create flat areas so you can glue the two rear ends together Enlarge Photo Step 5: Clean Up The Cuts The two hulls should now look like the ones at left. Use a hobby knife and some sandpaper to clean up the saw cut edges. Enlarge Photo Step 6: Glue the Hulls Together Glue the two hulls together, back to back as shown. Enlarge Photo

BOB'S BRASS SCORPION - STAGE TWO: HULL DETAILS

Step 7: Trim Heavy Flamers Remove a set of heavy flamers from a Defiler weapon sprue and use clippers or a hobby knife to trim off the nozzles and hoses as shown. Enlarge Photo Step 8: Attach New Barrels to form the Hellmaw Cannons Remove two "gargoyle head" gun barrels from the Chaos accessory sprue and glue them where the old nozzles used to be. Note that the new barrels should be upside down in reference to the old ones. Enlarge Photo Step 8B: Attach Hellmaw Cannons Glue the two flamers together as normal and glue these newly formed hellmaw cannons under the hull as shown. Enlarge Photo Step 9: Attach Hatches Remove one of each style of hatch from the Defiler sprues and glue them into the three circular slots on top of the Brass Scorpion hull. Enlarge Photo Step 9B: Attach Chaos Icon Remove a Chaos icon from a Chaos accessory sprue and clip off the pole from the bottom. Now remove a Khorne Icon from the same sprue and glue it to the front of the Chaos icon. Now glue the icon to the top of the Brass Scorpion hull where the two halves of the hull were joined. The icon should help cover up the seam a bit. Enlarge Photo

Step 10: Assemble Battle Cannon Glue the two halves of a Defiler battle cannon together. This will be used to make the Brass Scorpion's demolisher cannon. Enlarge Photo

Step 11: Remove Drum From Cannon Use a razor saw to cut the elevation drum off of the back of the cannon. Enlarge Photo Step 12: Carve Notch and Attach Mantlet Cover Use a hobby knife to carve a round notch on the back of the mantlet cover. Now glue on the face shaped mantlet cover from a Defiler weapon sprue. The Demolisher Cannon is now assembled. Enlarge Photo Step 13: Attach Demolisher Cannon Attach the Demolisher Cannon to the Front of the Brass Scorpion hull. The notch you carved in Step 12 should line up with the curvature of the front hatch. Enlarge Photo Step 14: Remove Claw Socket Take the left over hull half from step two and use a razor saw to cut off one of the claw arm sockets. Cut along the red line illustrated in the photo. Now clean up the cut edge of the socket with a hobby knife and some sandpaper. Enlarge Photo

Step 15: Attach Tail Socket Remove a claw armor plate from the Defiler hull sprue. Glue the plate to the back of the Brass Scorpion hull at an angle as shown. Now glue the socket from Step 14 to the armor plate with the bigger end on the bottom. Use your pin vice to drill a hole in the center of the socket as shown. Now use your clippers to cut a 1/4" lenght of brass rod and Super glue it in to the hole you just drilled. The hull is now complete. Enlarge Photo Step 16: Assemble Legs Assemble two Defiler claws and eight Defiler legs as normal, including the armor plates. You can glue on the claws and legs now if you want, but you may want to wait until you finished with the tail to ensure everything is posed the way you like. Enlarge Photo

BOB'S BRASS SCORPION - STAGE THREE: TAIL

Step 17: Trim Forearms Remove the top and bottom halves of the two remaining forearms from a Defiler hull sprue. Use clippers and a hobby knife to trim the claw parts (highlighted in pink) off of each piece. Enlarge Photo Step 18: Trim Inside of One Forearm Take one set of forearm parts and use a hobby knife to cut out the area highlighted in red from the inside of each half. Now assemble both sets of forearm pieces to form two forearms. Enlarge Photo Step 19: Connect One Forearm to Upper Arm Remove one set of upper arm pieces from a Defiler hull sprue and glue them together as normal. Now attach this upper arm to the Forearm that you trimmed in Step 18 as shown. Enlarge Photo

Step 20: Remove Hubs Remove the other set of upper arm pieces from a Defiler hull sprue and use a razor saw and/or hobby knife to carefully remove the Chaos icon hubs from each piece. Note that the hub from one of the upper arm halves has a pin extending from the inside of it. Take extra care not to cut this off or damage it while you are cutting the hub off the arm piece. You are going to use these two hub pieces to connect the two forearms together. Enlarge Photo Step 21: Attach Last Section of Tail Attach the other forearm to the end of the tail construction but do not glue the joint. Now slide the Hub with the pin (from Step 20) through the hole in the joint and glue the other hub to the pin on the other side of the joint. You should now hopefully have a moveable joint. Depending on how much you trimmed out in Step 18, you may need to remove some teeth from the joint of the forearm you are attaching. Leave as many teeth in as possible for maximum friction, nobody wants a droopy scorpion tail. Enlarge Photo Step 22: Trim Autocannons Remove two autocannons from a Defiler weapons sprue and use clippers or a hobby knife to trim off the barrels and belt feeds. Enlarge Photo Step 23: Remove Connecting Tabs Use clippers or a hobby knife to remove the connecting tabs from the pair of autocannons. The parts to remove are highlighted in pink. Now glue the two autocannon bodies together so they are flush. Enlarge Photo Step 24: Assemble Volley Gun Barrels Assemble the barrels from the Empire Volley Gun as normal. Enlarge Photo

Step 25: Assemble Scorpion Cannon Glue the Volley Gun barrels to the autocannon bodies as shown. Also glue an ammunition bin to the bottom of autocannons as shown. Bob used a storage box (with the eagle scraped off) from the Imperial Guard tank accessory sprue for an ammo bin but any number of other bitz can be substituted. Enlarge Photo Step 25B: Alternative Scorpion Cannons Bob chose to make his scorpion cannon out of an Empire Volley Gun but you could substitute any impressive looking weapon you like. Better yet, build your own scorpion cannon by combining a bunch of assault cannons, las cannons or other heavy weapons. The simplest and most economical route is to simply combine the four autocannons from the two Defiler kits into one weapon and decorate it with some armor plates or other leftover bits from the Defiler sprues. Enlarge Photo Step 26: Attach Tail Socket You need to build a part to mount the scorpion cannon to the tail. Bob used part of the dozer mount from the Imperial Guard tank accessory sprue but you could make one out of plasticard or other bitz instead. To build it Bob's way, use a razor saw to remove one end (highlighted in pink) from the dozer blade mount. Cut it at about a 30 degree angle as shown. Enlarge Photo Step 27: Trimming Gun Mount Use a hobby knife and or a razor saw to shave a sliver off of each side of the disc on the gun mount (highlighted in pink.) You need to shave it down just enough so that the disc will slide in between the two gear shaped tabs on the end of the tail. Now use a pin vice to drill a hole in the center of the disc. The hole should be about the same diameter as the ones in the end of the tail that it will line up with. Enlarge Photo

Step 28: Remove Hubs from Defiler Claws Remove the two remaining claw parts from a Defiler hull sprue. Use a razor saw and hobby knife to carefully trim the claw parts (highlighted in pink) off of the hubs. Note that the hub from one of claws has a pin extending from the inside of it. Take extra care not to cut this off or damage it while you are cutting the hub off. You are going to use these two hub pieces to attach the gun mount to the tail. Enlarge Photo Step 29: Attach Gun Mount to Tail Slide the disc on the gun mount in between the two gear parts on the end of the tail but do not glue it in. Now insert the hub with the pin (from Step 28) into the joint and glue the other end of the hub to the pin on the other side. You should now hopefully have a moveable joint. Enlarge Photo Step 30: Attach Scorpion Cannon Glue the scorpion cannon to the gun mount as shown. The tail is now complete. Enlarge Photo

BOB'S BRASS SCORPION - STAGE FOUR: FINAL ASSEMBLY

Step 31: Attach limbs Glue the eight legs, and two arms into the appropriate sockets, referring to the photos below for placement. Now attach the tail to the rear socket but do not glue it. Hopefully with the brass pin, the tail joint will be strong enough without gluing, this way you can remove it for easy transporting. The Brass Scorpion is now complete.
