My music video

Ivory is Trouble Knee Socks

Before filming

My aim
The aim for my music video is to create a illustrative, amplified and disjunctive style that shows a story based on the song Knee Socks by Arctic Monkeys because these types of video dont solely use one theme but a mixture of them which follows the conventions of the genre. I also plan to challenge the conventions in order not to create an obvious Blues Rock video. I have researched into various past music videos of the band, other bands and previous A2 media coursework music videos in order gain inspiration for my own and to see how it could possibly turn out. The idea for my video is to centre it on girl in the song they are singing about. Therefore I have chosen to create a story of her travelling from one place to another in order to get to a record shop to buy the actual Arctic Monkeys album, AM, that the song is originally featured on. The way the girl looks and dresses will based on the way she is described in the song, therefore, due to the name, she will be wearing Knee Socks. I also want the video to be something that the fans of the band will enjoy.

Questionnaire results
1.
To be able to design my music video, I conducted a questionnaire and uploaded it on Survey Monkey so that the general public were able to answer the 10 questions I created on what makes a good music video for a consumer which will lead them to want to watch it. I will analyse some of the answers to the questions that are the most relevant to designing. Analysed results: 1. How old are you? Everyone who answered this question was in the age range of 16-20, therefore I know who my target audience is.

3.

5. How should the video portray the song.

2. What genre of music do you listen to? This question helped me to find out what genre of music my target audience likes to listen to which will then allowed me to explore further into the genre and what appeals to the fans. As I initially wanted to do a Arctic Monkeys music video, this confirmed my selection as the band sings songs that cover most of these genres. 3. What typical features do you expect to see in a Blues Rock video? A narrative was the most popular answer for this question therefore my video had to contain a story of such. This is why I had the girl travelling from one place to another to by the album because I wanted others to think that she may have been the girl that the artist was talking about in the song because she is dressed in the way they have described her. This also links in with question 5 as the question and results are similar.

4.

6.

6. Which location/staging do you prefer the video to have? On location was the most popular choice rather that in a studio or on stage which links in with the previous questions and wanting a narrative in the video, therefore, I filmed the video out on location. 8. What do you like about favourite artists videos? The fact that you dont see the artist in the video and the story behind it which is loosely based on the song interested me most in the answers, therefore I incorporated into my video by only including the girl and slightly basing the video on the song by allowing you to think that the girl may be the girl in the song. 9. Do music videos have to show the artist or do you like seeing a story that they have created featuring other people? The answers were slightly vague but the overall response linked in with question 8, therefore, I chose not to include the artist.

8.

9.

10.

10. Do you prefer the video to be in colour or black and white? the majority of the respondents said they preferred the video to be in colour which allowed me to keep my music video in colour.

What to bring/do on set

- Permission asked for certain areas needed to film in - Equipment to bring compact digital camera, 16GB SD card, props and costume - Storyboard and shooting script done and to bring on location for filming - Actors know what time and where to meet for filming - iPod needed for music - Various shots and angles are available on location

During filming

Photos of filming
These are behind the scenes photos of me which were taken during the filming of the music video in the various locations chosen, such as at the Twyford station, in Henley-on-Thames and outside the record shop.

After filming

Editing my video
All the original video clips were uploaded to a USB and then converted and encoded to files in the Premiere Pro software. All together, there are 97 unedited clips of filming of my music video.

All the files needed are uploaded onto the software by clicking on the file tab at the top of the page, then clicking on import and selecting the video files I want. Each file is renamed by clicking on the file name and typing in the name you want to give it, such as the main focus of each clip (e.g. hand on rail).

Techniques and effects

Slow motion the clips used during the chorus are slowed down slightly which stretches them out, therefore, to change the speed, right click on the video and select speed/duration. To change the speed, you change the percentage and in this, I changed a variety of the clips from a range that spanned from 50% - 80% so that they went the speed I needed them to be.

Reverse speed was used on two of the clips because I wanted the direction of the camera movement and the objects within the frame to go the opposite way so that it fits in with the video and with the juxtaposition of the camera movement when next to other clips. To reverse the speed of a clip, I right clicked on it and selected the Speed/Duration button which brought up this box. I then clicked the tick box that read Reverse Speed and then OK.

Techniques used
I used a variety of camera shots, camera movements and editing techniques in order to create the video in as much of a professional manner as I could.

Camera shots: - Close up - Establishing shot - Wide shot - Low/high angle - Over the shoulder - Mid shot - Long shot - Point of view Camera movements: - Pan - Tracking

Editing: - Jump cut - Cuts - Slow motion - Reverse speed - Edit to the beat - Juxtaposition of subject in frame and direction of camera movement - Cutaway

My finished video
I have downloaded my finished video onto a disk. As this is the first time I have filmed a video, edited one and used the editing software, I am quite proud of the results. I used many techniques before and after editing that I have never previously used, such as reversing the speed. Choosing the order of the clips and the positioning of them once edited was difficult because I wanted it to be edited to the beat which is also how I filmed it as the actor in the video walked to the beat of the song.

Audience feedback and reactions towards my music video:

- I though the music video was really good. The use of camera shots was interesting because it showed various aspects of the actor and the location which gave me a 360degree view of the story. Shots like the close ups at the start when she was walking and the way the camera followed her throughout was good. I like how she walked to the beat of the song and my favourite part was the use of the record shop and showing her taking the Arctic Monkeys album at the end. - After answering the questionnaire to help find out what people like about music videos and what you would want to see, I thought that this video did a good job of using the answers I gave to create the video. There was a narrative which I thought consisted of that the girl in the video may have been a fan of the band and is dressed in the way that the girl is described in the song (wearing knee socks) and I like that the story was of her going to the record shop to buy their album on vinyl. I thought this was a good twist as I like how the video was quite mysterious because you didnt know where she was going or what she was doing as many music videos have this element of mystery in them to attract the audience. - As an Arctic Monkeys fan, I can say that I enjoyed the video because of the use of the song, the girl wearing knee socks and the AM album at the end, however, I didnt understand what was happening during the video until the end when she ended up in the record shop. I knew she was taking the train to a place this was clear and well done but I didnt understand where she was going and why she was going somewhere, until the end. Also I thought the point of view shot towards the end went on for a little too long.
