Licencia BSD
La licencia BSD es la licencia de software otorgada principalmente para los sistemas BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution). Es una licencia de software libre permisiva como la licencia de OpenSSL o la MIT License. Esta licencia tiene menos restricciones en comparacin con otras como la GPL estando muy cercana al dominio pblico. La licencia BSD al contrario que la GPL permite el uso del cdigo fuente en software no libre. Es muy similar en efectos a la licencia MIT.

Licencias estilo BSD

La primera versin de licencia BSD (de 4 clusulas) fue revisada poco tiempo despus de ser creada, existiendo dos variantes de ella: La nueva licencia BSD (o licencia BSD modificada) y la licencia BSD simplificada (o licencia de FreeBSD)

El principal problema de esta licencia es la llamada clusula de publicidad (la tercera clusula del texto anterior) que hace a la BSD original incompatible con la GPL (aunque la FSF la considera como software libre) y que esta licencia no sea aprobada por la OSI. El problema de esta clusula radica en que cada contribuidor reemplazaba en los crditos

Licencia BSD a la "Universidad de California, Berkeley" por su propio nombre o institucin, lo que trajo como consecuencia la existencia de una lista cada vez ms larga de diferentes instituciones que se estaba obligando a mostrar cuando se distribuan varios programas juntos. En 1999 esta clusula fue revocada con efecto retroactivo de las distribuciones BSD de la Universidad de California, Berkeley. Por lo que en la actualidad a la licencia original se le llama la "antigua BSD" o la "BSD de 4 clusulas"

El 22 de julio de 1990 William Hoskins elimina la clusula de publicidad del texto de la BSD. Esta licencia resulta muy similar en efectos a la licencia MIT, salvo por la clusula 3 que impide que un receptor del software (o un trabajo derivado) pueda tener el derecho a usar el nombre del autor sin el permiso de este.

Existe una versin simplificada y que es utilizada por el proyecto FreeBSD, donde se elimina la ltima clusula y se agrega un aviso de que las opiniones y puntos de vista de los contribuyentes del proyecto no representan necesariamente la visin del proyecto FreeBSD. El proyecto NetBSD desde el 20 de junio de 2008 utiliza una licencia de 2 clusulas similar (en donde se omite el aviso de las opiniones y puntos de vista de los contribuyentes que no representan al proyecto).

Software privativo
El autor, bajo esta licencia, mantiene la proteccin de los derechos de autor nicamente para la renuncia de garanta y para requerir la adecuada atribucin de la autora en trabajos derivados, pero permite la libre redistribucin y modificacin, sin establecer que se deban mantener las mismas libertades. Por este motivo se ha utilizado software libre bajo licencia BSD en software privativo, como es el caso de Mac OS X. Puede argumentarse que esta licencia asegura verdadero software libre, en el sentido que el usuario tiene libertad ilimitada con respecto al software, y que puede decidir incluso redistribuirlo como no libre. Otras opiniones estn orientadas a destacar que este tipo de licencia no contribuye al desarrollo de ms software libre.
