COLUMBA CATHOLIC CHURCH

March 16, 2014 Second Sunday of Lent

SAN DIEGO

Matthew 25
Thank you to all parishioners who have contributed rice and beans for our sister parish in Tijuana, Cristo Redentor. The poorest of the poor in that community are very appreciative of our donations. Now that we are getting some rain, will you also consider donating a blanket (new or used and clean) that can be taken to the members of that neighborhood? Our Matthew 25 group will be sure they are delivered to those who can really use them. There are large collection boxes at the front entrance to the church. God bless you for your generosity.

DESTINED FOR GREATNESS AND GLORY
The three stories in the readings today lead to one common direction. Abram was called to leave of his comfort zone and go to an unfamiliar place, with the promise of Gods blessing. Paul spoke about the call to holiness in Christ by bearing hardships for the gospel, and this too comes with grace and blessing. Amidst the fears and doubts of His followers, Jesus revealed His divine identity in His transfiguration. The son of a carpenter now is revealed as the Son of God. In these three stories, the ultimate destiny of those called by God is greatness and glory. Transfiguration is the glorification of the self, revealing our future and showing us the best version of ourselves. The Transfiguration of Jesus reveals Him as God shining in His glory. It is a foretaste of heaven. It speaks about the future when every longing of the soul will find their fulfillment upon the realization of Gods plan for His children. God has destined us for greatness and glory, but oftentimes we settle for less. We live as if we were born just to play football, enjoy movies and parties on weekend, work hard and buy all we want, retire and enjoy cruising and seeing the world. There is more to life than these. God does not want us to enjoy only for eight or ten decades of life. We are destined for eternity, for an endless enjoyment with God. The transfiguration of Jesus is a reminder that every human concern should always find their ultimate connection to eternal life. This also means that whatever hardships and darkness we experience on earth, we always hope for greatness and glory because of Him who loved us and gave Himself for our salvation.

Missionary Guest
Next weekend at all Masses we will welcome a nun from the Immaculate Mary Queen of Heaven missionaries. Their charism is to rescue women and children victims of prostitution and help break the cycle of poverty.
