Dr Mallikarjunappa, Professor, Mangalore University, inaugurated the week long Faculty Development Programme on research methods for Business

and Social Science conducted by the Department of Business Administration. Dr Mallikarjunappa, in his inaugural address, highlighted the power of knowledge in the present economy. He illustrated how scientific research has contributed towards the progress of modern life. He appealed to academicians to undertake research in the thrust areas of social development, such as poverty elevation, employment generation, rural development and women empowerment.

Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management gave the welcome address. He also handled the first session on Research Approaches, Research Process, Formulation of Research Objectives, and Types of Research. He stressed the importance of research and stated the need to follow a robust methodology taking all the dimensions into consideration so that we get a consistent result under different circumstances. Dr. A. P Achar, Director, Department of Business Administration presented an overview of the Programme. Dr. D. L. Prabhakara, Director, Sahyadri Institutions, presided over the function. Prof. Girish proposed the vote of thanks. Dr. Mallikarjunappa held a session on Literature review. He cited the need of validating the sources when the literature review is done. Dr. G. V. Shenoy, Shenoy Associates, held a session on Research Design where he stressed the need of literature design as the foundation for any research followed by the need of research design. All the participants enjoyed the sessions and they took active part in interactions deliberating different areas of research.

The second day began with the session by Dr. Shreemathi Mayya, Associate Professor, Department of Statistics, Manipal University. She addressed the needs of different scales of measurements, applicability of the same and also the reliability and validity of quantitative research. The normal problems that researchers face in designing the questionnaire was explained to the participants in a very simple way and also an exercise was given to the participants to enable them to expertise in designing the questionnaire. The second half of the day consisted of session on Introduction to SPSS by Ms. Ashma Monteiro, Assistant Professor, Department of Statistics, Manipal University. The participants got hands on experience on SPSS which benefited them to get a thorough knowledge on coding in SPSS. The day ended with a session on PROQUEST database by the company trainers giving a valuable insight into the huge data available for research which consists of scholarly peer reviewed journals and also magazines etc.

The third day began with the session by Ms. Ashma Monteiro, Department of Business Administration, Manipal University. She presented an overview of descriptive statistics and hands-on usage of SPSS. The second session by Mr. Girish, Assistant Professor, Department of Business Administration, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, was on the importance of Microsoft Excel in research. He highlighted the usage of shortcut keys, Introduction to SPSS and the extensive statistical techniques available in Microsoft Excel. In the final session of the day, Prof. Krishna Bhat, Fisheries College, Mangalore, underscored the importance of inferential statistics. He also stressed the need for clarity in writing the results of hypothesis testing.

The fourth day began with the session on parametric tests. Ms. Sucharitha Suresh, Associate Professor, Father Muller Medical College, Mangalore, highlighted the purpose, need, and applicability of different tests in parametric and non parametric tests using SPSS. Dr. Lalitha Achoth, Professor & HOD, Dairy Business, University of Agricultural Science, Hebbal, Bangalore, explained and illustrated the different multivariate techniques using SPSS, and validated the use of different techniques in research.

On the fifth day of the Faculty Development Programme on `Basics of Qualitative Research, Dr. BMR Reddy, Professor, University of Agricultural Science, Hebbal, Bangalore explained how qualitative research helps to gain a comprehensive and holistic view of social life of people in a wide range of natural settings. The session helped the participants deliberate on how qualitative research helps in exploring issues, understanding phenomena and answering questions. The second and third session of the day were handled by Mr. Imran Ali, Product Executive and Numerical Analyst. He illustrated how qualitative research software like NVIVO helps to manage, shape and make sense of unstructured information and how the software provides workspace for researchers and enables them to work through the information. The last session was an interaction between participants and a panel of experts consisting of Dr. Lalith Achoth, Dr. BMR Reddy, Dr. G V Shenoy and Mr. Imran Ali, which benefitted the participants to clarify their doubts in different areas and stages of their research.

On the last day of the week long Faculty Development Programme on Research Methods, Dr Vidyavathi, Associate Professor, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangalore explained the various aspects related to writing research articles and proposals. She explained the structure to be followed while preparing a research proposal or an article. The valedictory programme was held and a brief report on the sessions held was given by Ms. Susanna D'Silva. Dr. AP Achar, Director, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, welcomed the gathering. The participants provided valuable feedback on the sessions. Mr Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, delivered the valedictory address. In his speech, he inspired the faculty members to deeply involve themselves in research activities. Dr Umesh M Bhushi, Principal of the college delivered the concluding remarks after the distribution of the Certificates to the participants.
