Dynamic Brushes work just like regular brushes. What makes them different is that the designer has specifically set the dynamics so that when you drag the brush it can do a variety of things. The colors, shape, size or rotation can change to create some really neat brushing effects. They will all work with a mouse, but some will show even greater or more noticeable effects if used with a tablet and pen. Load your dynamic brush .abr file into your specific Photoshop program, following the Loading and Using Brushes instructions found in this pdf file.
1. Open a new document. It is always best to create a new layer to add your brush work to. This
will allow you to delete the layer if it does not turn out. Make sure the new layer is selected.
3. Drop down your brush menu. For dynamic brushes it is best to not view your brushes by title
or thumbnails. If your menu is set to thumbnails you will want to change it. 7
4. You want to view your menu in the stroke thumbnail mode. To switch your viewing mode
click on the little arrow in the circle at the top right of your brush box and select stroke thumbnail from the menu. You should see a similar menu as above. It will show you the basic brush shape and then the dynamics the brush is set to.
5. Select a dynamic brush. You can still change the size of dynamic brushes in your brush
palette, and also select the color for them in your foreground color box. Hold down the left mouse button and drag your mouse across your new document to get the dynamic effects. 8
6. If you have a pen and tablet you can also use them to draw with dynamic brushes. If the
designer added pen pressure dynamics to the brush you will see variations in either size, spacing or color when you apply various pressures with the pen. Here you will notice that the brush goes larger when you apply more pressure with the pen. It will go smaller when there is less pressure applied. This can create some great tapering effects.
7. Some brushes have color dynamics set by the designer. Color dynamics allow the brush to
alternate between the foreground and background colors in your color palette. Here I have a purple and a blue selected.
There should be some indication in the name of the brush whether or not color dynamics are applied. You will be unable to view the color options in your menu because it only shows it in black and white. The sample above has color added to the end of the brush name to let you know that this one will play with the color dynamics.
10
8. Switch your foreground and background color to the two colors you would like to see
blended in your dynamic brush. This example shows just a plain dynamic brush on top with no color dynamics. The bottom brush shows how a brush with color dynamics works to blend and alternate my blue and purple to create various color effects.
9. Some brushes such as dynamic stitching brushes are fun to just draw and create a freehand
stitched look. Sometimes though, you will want to create a straight line.
11
10. To create a straight line with your dynamic brushes hold down the shift key
while dragging your brush. It will create a perfectly straight line.
11. You can also create straight lines from one point to the next. This is great for going around
photos, frames etc. To do this hold down the shift key and click in one spot. (Do not drag the mouse.) Then move your mouse so you see your brush shape over the next point you want your line to draw and click the mouse again. It will then draw a continuous straight line from one point to another.
12
12. You can then click on the third point and it will draw a line from point two to point three.
Continue doing this until you are finished. This has now applied straight stitching lines all around a frame shape. There are endless possibilities for using dynamic brushes. The more you experiment and play with them the more you will understand all the neat effects they can create.

1. After you have installed the brush set according to the directions given in the Loading and
Using Brushes instructions found in this pdf file, open a transparent document.
2. Select one of the basic shape brushes and a color for the basic shapes. Use the brush to stamp
out the background for your embellishment.
14
3. Select a color that you wish to use for the decorative elements of your embellishment. Then
select a decorative brush from the brush set. Create a new layer and then stamp the brush on the embellishment.
4. Experiment with your texture filters, layer styles, lighting styles, and other mediums within
your software to create interesting effects. Create new layers and stamp additional patterns onto your embellishments. The skys the limit! 5. When you are ready to use and save your embellishment, lock or merge the layers together according to the directions of your particular software.
15
Using Brushes to Cut Embellishments Out of Background Papers (Directions work for Photoshop and Photoshop Elements software)
1. Open a new transparent document and the background you wish to cut your embellishment
from.
16
3. Move the background paper on top of the embellishment shape and size it so that the pattern
is according to your taste.
4. Use the keyboard shortcut CTRL + G (COMMAND + G for Mac users), in Photoshop
versions CS2 and above use CTRL + ALT + G (COMMAND + ALT + G for Mac users) to cut the pattern out of the paper. In order for this to work, the paper layer MUST be on top of the shape layer.
17
5. Merge the layers together. (Layer > Merge Visible) 6. Create new layers and decorate more, as desired.
Check out the Scrap Girls University for more tutorials on using Scrap Girls products!
18
1. Open up all the PNG files provided. 2. If your files do not come with a PSD file, drag all the desired PNG files into one transparent
document. Holding down the shift key while you drop and drag assures your templates will line up correctly. Another option to line the templates up properly is to open one PNG and then File > Place the other PNGs on top. (For these instructions Ive used ScrapSimple Alpha Templates: Art Deco). If it does include a PSD file, simply open the file for the desired alpha.
3. Start adding color to the different layers. You can do this a number of ways. Ive used a
Magic Wand Tool to select the letter A. Then I chose Select > Similar. With all the letters selected, and the letters layer highlighted in my layer palette, I chose Edit > Fill. You can select what color you want to fill with at this point.
19
4. Continue adding color to the different layers. You may also choose to cut out a layer from
patterned paper. To do this in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements open your template in a transparent document, layer your paper over the template and hit Ctrl+G. In Photoshop CS2 and newer versions, it is Ctrl+Alt+G; on a Mac, it is Command+Option+G. Merge these two layers to make it stick.
Pattern Regular...................Set Pattern to Soft Light, Opacity 50% 5. Alpha Templates often come with textures and patterns. Experiment with blending modes on
these layers for a wide range of effects.
20
6. When youre happy with how your alphas look, select Merge Visible from the drop-down
menu of the layers palette.
7. Then crop out the letters you want to add to your layout.
8. Then crop out the letters you want to add to your layout.

Creating Card Using Clipping Masks to Cut Out Pieces from Existing Backgrounds
1. Open the card back file where the file name contains, CardBase. It is a .png file and will be
the base of your card.
2. Open all of rest of the separate card pieces, along with the sample card.
22
3. Open the background paper that you would like to use for the base of your card.
4. Reduce the size of your background paper to 9x9 (or until you find a size that gives you the
pattern size that you prefer.) Note: Do not save your paper after you resize it to 9x9 or it will be stuck at that size.
23
5. Using the Move Tool, drag your paper over on top of your card base.
6. If the scale of the patterns is still too large to suit you, you can resize it by dragging the
corners. Note: Hold down the Shift key while you do this so that you dont change the scale of the pattern and ruin it! You may need to go out on your view (CTRL and the + key, or COMMAND and the + key on a Mac), so that you can see the edges of the background. 24
7. Create a clipping mask to cut the paper out so that it is the same size as the card base.
To do this in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, use the keyboard shortcut CTRL + G (COMMAND + G for Mac users), If you are using Photoshop CS2 or newer you will use ALT+ CTRL + G for Photoshop CS2 users (COMMAND + ALT + G on a Mac). Note: In order for clipping masks to work, the background paper MUST be on top of the shape that you wish it to be cut out to look like. (We have already done that in our process). 8. Make the paper stick in this shape by merging the visible layers. Do this by following this path: Layers > Merge Visible. (Note: The keyboard short cut to merging visible layers is CTRL + SHIFT + E, COMMAND + SHIFT + E on a Mac). 9. Close the background paper without saving it. You do not want it to be stuck at 9x9! 10. Using the Save As command, save your card back. This will retain your card base in its original state for next time.
25
11. Follow this process for each card piece and arrange the pieces on the card. 12. If desired, print your card at this step.
13. If you wish to print your pieces out separately so that you can cut them out and re-assemble
them as a paper card, hide the top layers and print the back. (To hide layers, click on the little eye and it will disappear.) I am going to print out the back. Notice that it is the only layer with the eye showing.
26
14. To print the remaining pieces at once, hide the background, and then spread the pieces out a
little bit. Then print.
27
1. Once they are cut out, place background shapes on card base, as desired. 2. Drag other separate card pieces (black shapes) onto the Card Base.
3. Add a guideline so you know where the card base will be folded in half. To do this, follow
this path: View > New Guide. (4.25).
28
4. Using the paint bucket tool, fill remaining card pieces (black blocks).
Make sure proper layer is selected when you use the paint can tool or you will paint on something you didnt intend to paint! You can also assemble the entire card, by filling in the card pieces with the paint can.
29
5. Arrange the pieces on the card to look like you want, hiding any layers that you dont like.
30
7. Another option for printing your card out traditionally is using the move tool. Just pull the
separate pieces into an 8.5x11 blank document. Be sure to link any layers you want to stay together.
31
8. You can rotate the shapes to try and fit everything to print on one piece of paper.
9. Watch printing margins though. You are likely going to have to use two sheets of paper.
32
This tutorial is going to show you how to work with ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates. (Craft Templates are typically put together the same way.) Before we start, I must make you aware that we have two types of templates in our store. This first is our single file templates. These ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates come as a single PNG file with cutouts that you can add photos or papers to, by simply sliding them under the template, then you decorate the top with additional papers. The second type we have is our layered template. These ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates come as stacked PNG files (or a compiled PSD file) that you will clip papers and photos to, using a clipping mask. This type of template gives you a little more freedom to be creative and allows you to move around the layers as youd like. The first one we are going to work with is the single PNG type of file. You will open your template and pull it over to a new 12x12 document. Add your photos in the squares, under the template. Dont worry if your photos overlap. Once you have adjusted the layers of the photos to get them placed as you would like, you can go back and delete anything that overlaps. (For this example, I changed the template to white since the photos were so dark.)
You will notice above that the main photo is on the bottom layer, the next layer is the cake photo. This has now covered up any of the main photo that was flowing over into the smaller slot. Next I will add the middle photo. This will be on the layer above the cake photo, to hide anything thats in its spot. 33
Now notice in the layers palette its on the layer above the cake photo. But to have the photo placed like I would like it, its overlapping the main photo. Select either your eraser or rectangle marquee tool, and remove any portion of the photo thats overlapping the other ones.
34
Place your last photo, once again removing anything that overlaps.
35
Now when you take away your template this is what your photos look like.
But thats ok, because you are going to be covering your template with paper. Select your background paper and drag it to your document. Only this time make sure its on the top layer, above your template.
36
With the paper layer active, you will mask your paper to your template. To do this in Photoshop Elements and older version of Photoshop use the keyboard shortcut CTRL + G (COMMAND + G for Mac users), in Photoshop versions CS2 and above use CTRL + ALT + G (COMMAND + ALT + G for Mac users).
37
To add another color, you follow the above steps again. This time I added the blue paper on the top layer. Using the rectangular marquee I selected the part of the paper I wanted to keep.
38
Now if I was to hit delete now it would erase the portion of paper highlighted, which I want to keep. So I need to go to the top tool bar, choose select then inverse.
This highlights the part of the paper I want to get rid of.
39
Hit delete. Then to rid yourself of the marching ants, hold the CTRL key and press D.
40
Finish off your layout by adding your embellishments. Our second type of ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates work very similar to the original kind. With these you will still be using the masking technique to add your papers and photos to the individual PNG file. The main difference with these is how you start out your layout. Since these templates come as indivdual PNG files, you will have to put your template together, unless of course there is also a PSD file included. To put these together, the easiest and quickest way is to open all the individual PNG files and a new 12x12 blank document. Hold down the shift key, click on a PNG file and drag it over to your new document. You should find that your PNG file will land in the correct spot on this new template. After you have finished with all your template pieces, you may need to readjust the order in which the layers fall, but you will have a finished template, that you may then save as a psd file so you will not have to do this again in the future. Now with some versions of Photoshop Elements, customers have found when following the steps above, instead of the file being placed in the correct spot on the layout it will land in the middle. If this is happening to you, you can use the file>place method to create your template. Simply open your new 12x12 document, then go to file>place. 41
Search your computer to find your location where you keep your scrapbooking supplies and select the first item. When you do this you will see the item is placed on your new document in its correct spot. Once you have done this with all your template pieces, you may then save it as a PSD file. Our newer ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates will include both a folder with the PNG files and a coordinating PSD file. If the program you are using allows the use of PSD files, you may simply open that file instead of working with the individual PNG files. Once you have opened your PSD file, simply click on the layer you want to add your paper to. Clicking on this will make that the active layer in your template.
42
Then drag your paper or photo over. You will find that it will land on a new layer directly above the active layer.
43
With the paper layer active, you will mask your paper to your template. To do this in Photoshop Elements and older version of Photoshop use the keyboard shortcut CTRL + G (COMMAND + G for Mac users), in Photoshop versions CS2 and above use CTRL + ALT + G (COMMAND + ALT + G for Mac users).
44
You will do the same for the rest of your layers, adding in papers and photos. Once you have finished, add your embellishments and you have a completed layout.
45
ScrapSimple Embellishment templates can be a fun, unique addition to your layout. This tutorial will give you some simple ideas on how to work with these types of templates. Before I begin with the tutorial, I must first explain there are two basic types of ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates. The first type are the templates you simply use a clipping mask along with your favorite photo or paper to achieve a finished look. An example of this type is the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Corner Them.
1. Open the embellishment template that you will be working on. Click on the layer youd like
to add your photo or paper to. Next you will pull over the paper or photo youd like to clip to the template piece.
46
2. With your photo or paper on a new layer above your template piece you will now add a
clipping mask. To do this, make sure this new layer is the active layer and in Photoshop Elements or Photoshop CS and below you can use the short cut Ctrl > G to mask these two layers, if you are using a Mac you would use the shortcut Command > G. In Photoshop CS2 or newer the shortcut is Ctrl > Alt > G, or Command > Alt > G on a Mac. If you are having problems with the short cut you can also go to Layer > Create Clipping Mask.
3. Once I have finished masking the paper or photo to the template piece I then resize the layer if
needed. To do this make sure that the paper or photo layer is active and using the shortcut Ctrl > T, on a Mac this would be Command > T, youll get the free transform prompt to come up. From here you can grab any of the corner points and resize your paper or photo to fit your template. Since this is already masked to your template piece you will see exactly how it will fit. If you are having problems with the shortcut for this, you can go to Edit > Free Transform.
4. Follow the same steps to customize all your layers in your embellishment template. 5. Once this is finished, youll want to bring this over to your layout. This can be done in one of
the following ways. First is to merge all the layers. To do this choose Layers > Merge Visible. This will flatten your template so you can pull it over in 1 piece to your layout. Keep in mind though, if you close the document you originally layered your files on theres no going back. So you will want to keep that open. If you find that you need to change something you can simply open that original document choose Ctrl > Z , on a Mac Command > Z , to step backward and youll have an unlayered template again, which you can make changes on.
The other way to do this is to link all the layers. In your layers palette click on the top layer, hold down the shift key and then click on the bottom layer. You should see all your layers highlighted. Then in the layers palette right click with your mouse and choose link layers. This will link your layers where you can pull them over all at once. But still leave each on their own active layer. 47
The other type of ScrapSimple Embellishment Template we have, contains texture or a design in which you need to show through to finish the look. You will find this commonly in ribbon, flowers, even crinkled or creased embellishments such as tags. When working with this type of template the first steps you take will be exactly the same as what I have described above. You will open up the template, then add a new color fill layer or bring in a pattern paper and mask this to the ScrapSimple Embellishment Template you are currently working with. Below you will see the outcome of this process while I was working with the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Flowers Biggie and a paper from the Persimmon Paper Mini.
6. You will notice that while your paper does take the shape of the template, you do not get the
detail of the texture thats on the original template.
7. To correct this, simple go to your layers palette and change the blending mode for this new layer. This is the drop down next to the opacity. Try different things such as overlay, screen, color burn. You will find that each mode will give you a different look, while still letting the detail of the template to come through.
48
8. For fun, try duplicating your paper layer and applying different modes to each layer. Here, I applied overlay to one layer and screen to the other layer.
There are many other ways to color and work with ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates. The above tutorial though, will give you a great place to start with the basics of these items. Once you get that down and understand how they work, start playing around and see what other fun ways you can come up with to color templates.
49
What is a ScrapSimple Paper Template? It is the base of any finished paper. All you need to do is add your own colors and textures and you have a custom papers that can be used by itself in a layout, or added with your favorite collection. To start off Im going to give you a few, easy ways to fill these templates with color. Now keep in mind, just like with anything you do in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements there are several ways you can get to the same outcome. These are just some ideas to get you started.
50
2. When it appears in your software program, add a new layer and drag the layer below the
template. Then, using the color picker select a color of your choice. With the paint bucket tool, fill the new layer with color. Select the pattern layer and in the Blending Mode choose Overlay. Adjust the Opacity to 25%. The next example is created using a new fill layer. If your wanting to fill the template with one shade of color and have a different color bottom layer, this will work easily for you.
51
document. Select Layer>New Fill Layer>Solid Color. You will then get a pop up screen, click ok, then select the color for the layer.
3. Open the ScrapSimple Paper Template youd like to work with. Move it over to a new 12x12
52
see a solid color over your template. You will need to mask these 2 layers, make sure the color fill layer is the active layer and in Photoshop Elements or Photoshop CS and below you can use the short cut Ctrl > G to mask these two layers, if you are using a Mac you you would use the shortcut Command > G. In Photoshop CS2 or newer the shortcut is Ctrl > Alt > G, or Command > Alt > G on a Mac. If you are having problems with the shortcut, you can also go to Layer > Create Clipping Mask. Now you can add a new layer of color under your template layer to finish off your paper. The next example will show you how to colorize the templates using the magic wand and color fill. This comes in handy if your wanting to color in your paper template with several different colors, and your template is in shades of grey. For this example Ill be using the ScrapSimple Paper Template: Diamonds.
4. Once you have selected the color you would like your pattern to be click ok. You will then
53
magic wand and select a diamond on the template. When you have selected that diamond the marching ants appear around it. While you are making your selection if you have contiguous unselected you should find that all the diamonds in that same shade should be selected at one time.
5. Open your template and pull it over into a new document. Once you have this open take your
54
all the diamonds in that same shade now have the marching ants around them.
6. If you can only get 1 diamond to be selected then you can choose Select>Similar you will see
55
7. To fill those diamonds with color go to Edit>Fill Selection. A color fill box will pop up. From there you can choose to fill those diamonds with your foreground or background (that would be the colors in the bottom left corner that are default at black/white) or choice color. Once you select color as an option, the color picker box will come up and you can select your shade from there. After you have picked your color click ok and you will see the diamonds are now filled with the chosen color.
56
8. To deselect the diamonds (get rid of the marching ants) hold down the ctrl key and hit D. Follow the same steps with the remaining diamonds.
57
Finally, the last type of paper template we have in the store will involve some type of texture to them. These templates are great for creating solid colored papers or for adding texture to other papers.
9. Open your ScrapSimple Paper Template, drag it over to a new document and then you will want to add a new color fill layer. To do this choose Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color. Choose the color you would like and click ok.
58
10. Once you have added your new color fill layer, you will notice you no longer see the texture
of your paper. To correct this, with your color fill layer the active layer, go to the blending mode pull down list (which is in your layers palette next to the opacity) and try various options there.
59
You will find, in the end, each one will give you a different outcome. Try playing with them until you get the final look you desire.
60
Finally, these textures are a great way to finish off other ScrapSimple Paper Templates. By simply adding a texture template on top of your other layers, and playing with the blending mode you can go from a flat dull finished paper, to something unique that will pop off your layout. When working with ScrapSimple Paper Templates, theres an endless amount of possibilites. The main thing to remember is have fun with them and see what you can come up with.
61
Photoshop actions are a great way to automate tedious tasks, speed up labor intensive effects and take advantage of the expertise of others. There are 3 different methods for installing actions. Each of these methods can be used at different times for different actions.
Quick Installation
Browse to your action file in your downloaded folder using your computers browser. An action file ends in .atn. With Photoshop open at the same time, select the action file from your browser, drag it into your Photoshop workspace and drop it. You have just installed your action! (*Hint* this works with other Photoshop presets as well, brushes, styles, tool presets, etc.).
62
With Photoshop open you can load actions as you need them. Find your Actions palette. At the top right hand corner of the dialog box is an arrow. When you click on it, it will open up a fly out menu. From there you can load actions. A browser will open up for you to locate your action file, when you have found the file you want to install hit load and your action should appear at the bottom of your actions palette.
63
Permanent Installation
Your action download should include a file with the ending .atn. Copy this file and paste it in your actions file within Photoshop. (it is a good idea to keep a copy of your action in your original folder outside of Photoshop) You can find your Photoshop Actions folder at this address: Local Disk: C > Program Files > Adobe > (your version of PS) > Presets > Photoshop Actions. With this type of installation Photoshop will read this action every time it opens up, if you have a lot of extra presets installed it will take longer for Photoshop to read them all when it opens. If Photoshop has slowed down for you and you have a lot of presets loaded into the program, it might help to limit the number of actions you have installed and use one of the other methods of quick installation when you need an action as you work.
64
If you have successfully installed your action it will appear at the bottom of your actions palette. Most actions will come with instructions. Prepare your workspace according to the instructions included with your action. Some will require a certain type of file to be open, or certain layers to be active. Some actions require that certain tools be installed or active for the action to run. It is a good idea to save any work you have started before running an action! It may perform steps that you wont be able to just undo. Read the instructions well, this will make it easier for the action to run smoothly all the way through. When you are ready to try it out, find your action in the actions palette. If there are multiple actions in a set decide which one you want to use. If you have prepared your workspace according to the directions and saved your work hit the play button at the bottom of the actions palette. The function buttons at the bottom of the palette are familiar symbols for record, stop and play. Some actions may require input. Insert the required information and hit enter. If you need to stop the action to follow directions, when you have completed the task go back to the actions palette and hit play. The action should resume where it left off. We hope that the actions you have purchased will be a rewarding tool to learn to use. If you have question about installation or using your actions, post a message on the message board at ScrapGirls.com, or e-mail customer service at hello@scrapgirls.com.

These instructions will help you to install and use Actions in PSE 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0. Adobe changed the method for installing actions in PSE 5.0. Look for these directions directly after the PSE 3.0 and 4.0 directions.
To find your effects folder use your computers browser. These screenshots are from a computer using Vista, but the address will still be the same in other browsers. Go to Computer > Local Disk:C > Program Files > Adobe > PhotoshopElements 3.0 > Previews > Effects. After copying the folder containing the action you wish to install paste it into this folder.
66
Now that your action folder is in place you need to force Photoshop Elements to pick up the new information. The program uses a cache system so that it does not have to rebuild the information every time. However, when we add new information into the program we need it to rebuild those thumbnails and links to the new effects we have installed. To do this we must delete the Cache folder. Yes, its true you need to delete the whole folder, (it will not affect anything else in your program). When PSE doesnt find a cache folder to get information from it will go into the folders and rebuild all that information and create a new cache folder. Your action is now installed and ready to use. Some actions may come with other tools that need to be installed in order for the action to run properly. Now would be a good time to install any other required files. To test out and use your newly installed actions scroll down to the section Using your newly installed Action.
67
Locate the folder containing the action you wish to install. An Action that is created for PSE will have a folder with two files in it. One is the Action file which is named for the action and ends in .atn. The second file will be named exactly the same but will be a .psd file. Locate this file folder. To install the action you will copy the whole folder into your filters Folder. Find your filters folder by going to Local Drive: C > Documents and Settings > All Users > Application Data > Adobe > Photoshop Elements > 5.0 > Photo Creations > special effects > photo effects. The Application Data folder is a hidden folder, to be able to see hidden folders you have to go to the All Users folder > View > check View Hidden Folders. If you happen to have Vista, to reveal your hidden folders go to Organize> Folder and Search Options > View > Show Hidden files and folders. Then your address will look like this: Local Drive: C > Program Data > Adobe > Photoshop Elements > 5.0 > Photo Creations > special effects > photo effects. In order to get PSE to recognize the new actions you may need to hold the shift key down while restarting PSE 5.0. 68
Lets try it out. Open Photoshop Elements. Go to your Styles and Effects Palette, it should be directly above your layers Palette. Choose Effects from the menu, in the Effects menu your newly installed action should appear in the drop down list. If you click on the name of the new action it should bring up an icon with the name of the new action. Another option is if you select all then the icon for the new action should appear in the Effects palette. (note: Effects are displayed in alphabetical order, so dont look for your new action at the end of the list. It most likely will show up somewhere in the middle). Prepare your workspace according to the instructions included with your action. Some will require a certain type of file to be open, or certain layers to be active. Read the instructions well, this will make it easier for the action to run smoothly all the way through. When you are ready to try it out double click on the icon in the effects palette, it should begin right away. Some actions may require input. Insert the required information and hit enter. If you hit stop or cancel at any time this will stop the action and return your document to the way it was before you started the action. It is still a good idea to save any work you have started before running an action! It may perform steps that you wont be able to just undo. If you ever have problems installing your PSE Actions, or If you need help using an action. Post a message on the message board at ScrapGirls.com, or e-mail customer service at hello@scrapgirls.com. Enjoy!

Locate the folder for your version of PSE within the file you have unzipped. Inside this folder you will find an .atn (action) file and a .png file. If there is more then 1 .atn file you will see there is a .png file for each one. The sample above is from the MST Photos That Pop PSE Action. Go to edit>select all then edit>copy to folder and copy the items to the following folders.
In Window XP
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0 or 7.0 or 8.0 or 9.0\Photo Creations\photo effects
70
If you cant see the Application Data folder (in XP), it is hidden. You will need to tell your computer to unhide it. This is how. Go to Tools > Folder Options
71
Click on the View tab. Under the Hidden files and folders icon, select Shown hidden files
and folders. Click on Apply and then OK. You can then go back and follow the path to the photo effects folder.
72
Hint: To easily find this folder again so that you can install additional styles, select the option
to create a desktop shortcut to it by right-clicking on the photo effects folder before you enter the folder. Make sure you do this BEFORE you enter the folder.
73
If you cant see the Application Data folder in Vista or Windows 7, it is hidden. You will need to tell your computer to unhide it. This is how. Go to My Computer \C: and type Alt-T. This will bring up a menu. Click on View and check
the box to Show Hidden Files.
Once you have these installed your folder should look something like this. Now that you have installed your new actions, restart Photoshop Elements.
If you are sure youve correctly installed the action, and they are still not showing up you will need to rebuild your database. This is done simply so that Photoshop Elements will recognize your newly installed items. To do this, delete the mediadatabase.db3 file which will be found in the following path: In XP, C: > Documents and Settings> All Users > Application Data > Adobe > Photoshop Elements > YourVersion> Locale > en_us. In this folder youll see a file called MediaDatabase.db3
74
In Vista/Windows 7 C: > ProgramData> Adobe > Photoshop Elements > YourVersion > Locale > en_us. In this folder youll see a file called MediaDatabase.db3, right click on this file and choose Delete from the pop up menu and restart Photoshop Elements. This may take a few moments, but once its done you should be able to see the new items you installed.
Choose Photos Effects then Show All from the drop down list.
75
You will now see the icons for the new action you installed listed along with the other ones.
The actions will all fall in alphabetical order. If you hover over the icon you will see the name pop up. Or you can click on the double arrows to the right of Effects and choose Show Names. Doing this will allow you to see the name of each style/action that you have installed.
If you ever have problems installing your PSE Actions, or if you need help using an action, post a message on the message board at ScrapGirls.com, or e-mail customer service at hello@ scrapgirls.com. Enjoy! Check out the Scrap Girls University for more tutorials on using Scrap Girls products!

Locate the folder for your version of PSE within the file you have downloaded and unzipped. Inside this folder you will find an .atn (action) file and a .png file. If there is more then 1 .atn file you will see there is a .png file for each one. The sample above is from the MRE_SSTools_ Actions_EdgeIt_PSE Action. Go to Edit>Select all. Then Edit>Copy. Now find the folder where the new actions belong- this is the path to find the correct folder: MACINTOSH HD\Library\Application Support\Adobe\ Photoshop Elements\6.0 or 8.0\Photo Creations\Photo Effects. Go up to the Menu bar and select Edit>Paste items.
77
Inside the path Library\Application Support\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\(your version)\Locale\ en-US, drag the file Mediadatabase.db3 to your trash. (Elements will rebuild this database when you restart it.)
78
79
Once you have installed your .atn and .png file and renamed your Mediadatabase file, you may now restart your PSE. Keep in mind that since you renamed the Mediadatabase.db3 file, your program will have to rebuild so you may have to wait a while for it to do so. Also after every group of new actions are installed you will need to rename this database. Once your PSE has restarted, choose Photo Effects then Show All from the drop down menu.
80
You will now see the icons for the new actions you installed listed along with the other ones. The actions will all fall in alphabetical order.

There are three different methods for installing and running scripts in Photoshop. Each of these methods can be used at different times for different scripts.
Install Script: Your script download should include a file with the ending .jsx. With
On a PC:
On a MAC:
Applications>Photoshop (your version)>Presets>Scripts. With this type of installation, Photoshop will read this script every time it opens. If you have a lot of extra presets installed, it will take longer for Photoshop to read them all. If Photoshop has slowed down for you and you have a lot of presets loaded into the program, it might help to limit the number of presets you have installed and use one of the other methods of quick installation when you need a script as you work.
122
123
Option 2: Install in Folder of Choice and Run from File Menu Install Script: If this is your first Photoshop script, create a folder on your hard drive to copy
them to. For example, you might create a folder like C:\My Documents\Photoshop Tools\Scripts. Then, with Photoshop closed, copy and paste the .jsx file from the download into the scripts folder.
Run Script: File>Scripts>Browse and then navigate to the scripts folder you created and
select the script you want to run. Double-click the script name or select it and click Load to run the script.
124
125
Option 3: Install Script in Folder of Choice and Run from an Action or Function Key
Creating an action to run the script is very simple and saves time from having to go to the File menu. Assigning a function key to the action allows you to run the script with the push of a button!
Install Script: Install the script following the instructions in Option 2. Run: To create a new action to run the script, open a new document and save it. Where the
document is saved and what it is called are not important and you can delete the document when you are done creating the actions.
Go to Window>Actions to display the actions palette, if it isnt already displayed. Every action must belong to a set, which is basically a folder containing one or more actions. If you do not already have an action set you want to use, create a new one by opening the fly-out menu on the actions palette and selecting New Set. 126
127
Installing Scripts in Adobe Photoshop In the New Set pop-up that opens, give the action set a name and click OK.
The new action set will now appear at the bottom of the actions palette.
With the new action set selected, click on the new action button at the bottom of the action palette.
128
In the New Action pop-up window, give the new action a name. Verify that the set is the one where you want the action to go. In the Function Key field, select a function key from the drop-down (if desired). This will be the shortcut key for running this action. Click on the Record button to begin recording.
Go to File>Scripts>Browse to navigate to the scripts folder you created and select the script you want to run. Double-click the script name or select it and click Load to run the script.
129
Once the script is finished running, click the Stop button. This stops the action from recording any more steps.
130
When finished, if you click the arrows to open the different levels of the action, you should see something similar to this:
If you did not select a function key previously or want to change the function key assigned to an action, double-click on the action name (not the set name) and the Action Options dialogue window will open. You can now assign/change the function key.
To run the script, you simply press the function key assigned to it! Alternately, the script can also be run by selecting the action from the actions palette and pressing the Play button.
131
The last and most important step is to SAVE the action set. With the action set selected, open the fly-out window and select Save Actions. In the window that pops up, navigate to where you want to save the action and click Save.
132

155
Now I have made it pop off of the paper with one of Rozanne Paxmans ScrapSimple Tools
- Styles Neutral Shadows 2802. Notice how the brown-tinted shadow looks very natural.
The same item used with one of the default Photoshop Elements shadows doesnt look as
natural. This is because shadow color is affected by the items around them and is rarely pure black. 156
Create a style folder where you will hold all of your new styles. This folder should be located
somewhere other than in your Photoshop Elements program folder file system. A good place would be in youre my Documents folders or perhaps, on your Desktop. When you want to move new Styles in or out of your Photoshop Elements Styles folder, open both folders so that you can view the contents. (Your Photoshop Elements Style folder can be found at C>Programs>Adobe>Photoshop Elements (3 or 4)>Presets>Styles.)
157
Delete out enough of the Styles from your Photoshop Elements Style folder so that you will
have room to install the Styles that you wish to use. Dont delete your default styles. They are easily identified as the Scrap Girls Styles always start with the initials associated with the Scrap Girls designer who created them. Remember, you can only have 29 Styles installed at once. In the folder where you have stored all of your Scrap Girls styles, highlight the styles that you wish to install for use in Photoshop Elements.
158
Copy then by either going to Edit>Copy or using the keyboard shortcut, Ctrl + C. Select the Photoshop Styles folder by clicking on it. Paste the Styles into the Style folder by
using the Paste command found at Edit>Paste or by using the keyboard shortcut, Ctrl + V. Your new Styles will now available for use.
159
If you have Photoshop Elements open, close it and restart it. Your Styles will now be
available for use. Here is how you can set your Styles list back to the default list, should you wish to do that: Delete all of the new Styles out of your Photoshop Elements Styles folder. This is necessary because Photoshop Elements will work to display any styles that are in that folder. Start Photoshop Elements. You will see the option to Edit and Enhance Your Photos, which is where you digitally scrapbooking from. Click on that and then IMMEDIATELY hit Ctrl + Alt + Shift. When you do that, you will get a dialogue that asks you if you want to delete the Adobe Photoshop Elements Settings File? Select Yes. (Note: If you have done this several times in one session, Photoshop Elements may not continue to show you this dialogue, but will just reset it for you automatically when you hit the command keys.)
160
Inside of each folder are three files: A CategoryCache, ListCache, and ThumbNailCache.
Delete these files. Dont worry - you wont hurt anything by doing this. Photoshop Elements automatically rebuilds the cache files anytime you restart the program if they are missing. These files have to do with what thumbnails are showing up in your Effects and Filters listing and deleting them will help unstuck your Styles cache if Photoshop Elements gets particularly difficult. This is usually not necessary, though.

In both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, locate the ScrapSimple Type Path you want to use from your hard drive. Open the file. Drag the path onto your page layout. TRIPLE click on the sample text to highlight the entire path. Then just start typing. You can change the font, point size, and type colour. Depending on the level of control offered with your software, you can adjust letterspacing. You can change whether the line of type is centered on the path, flush left or right. You can use only part of a path, or the entire path. You can also rotate the path to fit your page layout. In Photoshop Elements, and perhaps other versions of Photoshop, you will get pop-up windows asking specific questions. Heres what you may see.
Click on No. Drag the path onto your page. A new window may pop up.
With your type Tool selected, triple click anywhere on the path. Triple clicking selects the entire path and highlights the whole path.
