CES Tomorrow
Mission
To create a globally recognized centre of excellence for the next generation academia and industry leaders in Energy. Our aim is to address Pakistan's energy challenges by influencing Policy Makers, developing Human Resource and Technologies, promoting Applied Research, protecting our Environment and mobilizing communities to contribute to sustainable economic growth of Pakistan.

Vision
To be a world class education and applied research centre dedicated to resolving Pakistan's Energy crisis contributing to sustainable development of the country through enterprise activities and academiaindustry collaboration.

Introduction
Centre for Energy Systems (CES) was launched in June 2011 to provide impetus to energy sector programmes and support and consolidate related activities/ projects with a view for contributing to national economy in times of energy crisis. It was inaugurated on January 9, 2012 and its first initiative MS Energy Systems Engineering was formally inaugurated on 20th November, 2012 in a dignified ceremony at CESNUST, which was comprised of distinguished guests from three continents. Collaborating partners from Canada, USA, UK, RSA and KSA warmly participated in the event. The main objective of the Centre is the provision of sustainable supply of energy at affordable rates with greater share of renewables in the energy mix to reduce environmental footprint. The Centres vision resides in setting up pilot plants to demonstrate the feasibility of specific programmes in the various energy sectors, thus, takes the lead in moving from research and development to demonstration; a step that is considered vital for meaningful academia-industry collaboration. The Centre incorporates existing institutes of NUST to this core mission. Todays world is threatened by fast fossil fuels depletion and global warming. Centre for Energy Systems has been engaged to equip our engineers with latest knowledge of renewable energy to practice innovatively in critical areas for the management of existing fuel and environment crisis. It will shine our succeeding generations tomorrow.

CES TOMORROW

Brief History
The Centre for Energy Systems was announced in June 2011 with the vision to be a world class education and applied research Centre dedicated for resolving Pakistans Energy crises leading to sustainable development of the country through enterprise activities. The inauguration of renewable energy labs, research journal and centre website took place in January 2012. It was recognized as the USAID Centre for Advanced Studies in April 2012 following a competitive bid. It launched its maiden MS Degree Program in Energy Systems Engineering as of fall 2012, the only program in the country, inviting great attention. International Conference on Climate Change, VESSCCA, AGL, China Pakistan Cooperation Conference, UKPK Coal Conference, UN ESCAP APCTT, 5th South Asia Economic Summit, NDU and HEC-USAID workshop on promoting university industry interaction. In a short span of about a year CES faculty has contributed over half a dozen papers and two US patents on innovative technologies. Our faculty and students appeared on the popular TV Show Sabz Inqilaab (Green Revolution) to create awareness among farmers and the public at large about the prospects of energy crops and the production of biofuels. As part of the Policy Dialogue Series of the SDPI, CES NUST reviewed the Pakistan Power Sector Outlook report on KESC and provided their analysis which is published as commendations. Since its inception CES has developed and demonstrated several technologies including Pakistans first solarized Photo bioreactor for Algae production, Solar assisted hydrogen production for efficient fuel combustion, our partners NRG Biofuel Canada planted Jatropha field on 5 acres in southern Punjab

Under the USAID-CAS program, CES ventures to develop into an international center of excellence compared with the best in the world.
to test on a commercial scale its prototype technology which enables highly efficient bio oil expression. We have recently designed and fabricated an autoclave that will enable any kind of biomass including Algae to be directly converted to liquid fuel. We have also successfully developed and synthesized the catalyst to convert Syngas into diesel for which a pilot scale plant will be set up at NUST soon. We appreciate the support of Planning Commission and FFCL in this direction. Under the USAID-CAS program, CES ventures to develop into an international center of excellence compared with the best in the world. Leading edge facilities in solar, fuel cells, clean coal and biofuels will be established. It will raise 250 outstanding graduates and conduct 50 applied projects in active engagement with US counterparts and local industry over the next five years.

Centre for Energy Systems was recognized as the USAID Centre for Advanced Studies in April 2012 following a competitive bid.

Academia-industry linkages will be fostered for innovation performance. This linkage is vital for commercially driven work and outputs. Industry provides the means through which individual discoveries become value added products. Likewise core technologies likely to spark new industries often result from university patents. The Centres outreach is triggered by its collaborating partners both at home and abroad. Our international partners are located across four continents with whom we have working relations and even joint publications that include NRG Canada, OSU USA, Koroto Sheffield UK, Witts and, Monomer RSA, UKM Malaysia, ASEAN, and Tsinghua University China, among others. We profoundly realize this equation at NUST and will keep striving to sustain and strengthen it. The Centre featured in all major international energy moots like NASIC, World Future Energy Summit,

Industry Testimonials
NRG Biofuels - Canada:
CES has taken to contribute to the hard work required to finding the energy panacea- which in todays world seems to be made up of many different elements and forms of energy. Centre for Energy Systems at NUST, will provide this opportunity to develop the many small steps required for those big jumps forward that will have a profound, positive effect on providing cheap, appropriate technology and energy to the less fortunate of Pakistan and the world. (J. Chris Willmann, CEO - NRG Biofuels) Note: NRG has invested 12.5 Million Rupees in CES for commercial oriented research activities with special focus on Biofuel from Algae and Biomass. In this regard, it has also established N -Tech Energy

SDPI - Pakistan:
CES, NUST must play a leading role in the policy formulation of the energy sector. At NUST, we have the best expertise available to supply the intellectual capital needed for an effective think-tank. In the scenario when the country is already facing unprecedented energy and gas crises, NUST would help the country in setting new regulatory performance indicators in fuel consumption as well as reducing tariff and subsidy at large. (Dr Arshad Abbasi, Director SDPI)

ICI - Pakistan:
CES is need of the hour. Lack of credible knowledge was the reason behind the energy crises and CES can give valuable contribution to the industry in this regard. We look towards CES, NUST to foster long term collaboration in the field of energy to offer sustainable solutions to the industry. (Ahmad Sohail, Vice President ICI Pakistan) Note: ICI has donated av amount of 0.5 Million Rupees for exploring commercial avenues in the energy sector at platform of CES. It will also accommodate CES Internees to broaden their vision for professional growth.

PSO Pakistan:
PSO will provide buy back guarantee to the entire output oil/ Biodiesel produced by NUST and will facilitate NUST with the new developments acquired by PSO in the field of Biofuels. NUST will act as a focal point for integration/ evaluation of PSO supplied oil/Biodiesel with the organizations present in the federal territory like hydrocarbon Research Institute.
