DENTAL MATERIALS 5 REQUIREMENTS FOR GOOD IMPRESSION MATERIALS:

CLASSIFIICATION OF IMPRESSION MATERIALS • No toxic substance

• HARDENING • Good flow property

o THERMOSET/CHEMOSET • Dimensionally stable

 They undergo setting with a • Compatible with the cast or die material
chemical reaction
o BORAX doesn’t apply to this unless you add
 Soluble plasters, zinc oxide Potassium Sulfate
eugenolate, alginate ( irreversible
hydrocolloid), elastomers ( rubber • Good adhesive property to the tray
impression materials: silicone
polyether, polysulfide)
• Easy to manipulate

 Irreversible impression materials

• Should have sufficient mechanical strength to
withstand the force
o THERMOPLASTICS
• Should be palatable
 They undergo setting with a
change in the temperature
• Reasonable cost

 Modeling compound, agar

• Appropriate setting time
(reversible hydrocolloid)
• Good storage life
 Reversible impression materials

• APPLICATION/USAGE AND MECHANICAL

o PASTE FORM has longer storage life than
PROPERTIES powder form

o RIGID/INELASTIC o LIQUID FORM has a shorter storage life

 Can only take impression in the

absence of the undercast
*Agar is not popularly used because it needs a hydrocolloid
conditioner unlike Alginate that only needs rubber bowl
 In te absence of undercasts in
and spatula
edentulous patients

 Soluble plaster, ZOE paste and

modeling compound
IMPRESSION-TAKING TECHNIQUE

o ELASTIC
• SINGLE

 Can take impression in the o Do impression once

presence of remaining teeth
• DOUBLE

o Has preliminary and secondary impression

HOW TO WITHDRAW IMPRESSION FROM THE PATIENT’S
MOUTH:
 SECONDARY
• TEASING
• Aka
o Rocking laterally WASH/FINAL/CORRECTI
VE
o When there are no remaining teeth
• Corrects the defect of a
• SUDDEN PULL/JERK/SNAP preliminary impression

o When there is remaining teeth

o Parallel to the remaining long axes of teeth HOW TO TAKE AN IMPRESSION

• Patient must be seated at an upright position

• Patient’s mouth should be at the dentist’s elbow level

• Insert the tray one side at a time

• Assist with three point contact

• To prevent drifting of the impression material to the

soft palate, ask the patient to tilt his/her head
downward

• With the lower arch, ask the patient to lift his/her

tongue up without asking the patient to tilt the head

• SOP – wash it in running water to remove: saliva,

blood, food debris to prevent ruining the impression

• After washing, shake well to remove the excess

water before proceeding to cast construction
