Objectives:

INTRODUCTION TO RETENTIVE /NON-RETENTIVE LATCHING AND TIMING

Introduction to Retentive and Non-retentive latching Familiarize students with the use of Timers in Ladder Logic. Introduce the working of retentive and non-retentive timers and using them to control certain operations in PETRA.

PETRA (Pneumatic/Electronic Application Trainer)

Retentive and non-retentive Latching Retentive Latching retains the relay state even through a power failure, while non-retentive latching does not. It simply reverts to its un-energized state in case of a power failure.

Nonretentive Latching

Retentive Latching

Timers Timers are inherently non-retentive. In this category there are two types: Timer ON (TON) and Timer OFF (TOF). In the retentive timers category we only study Timer ON (RTO) in this course.

Summary of TON and TOF

Retentive Timer ON cannot be reset using the same rung which started its timing. It needs a separate rung through which it can be reset. Procedure (for PETRA):The procedure for the objectives of PETRA lab 2 is as under:1. Open Example00 in the folder assigned to your Group and save it as Latch.rss. Create a program using Latches that does the following: i) When Dispenser is empty, Belt 1 in PETRA should run. ii) The Belt should stop running ONLY when the part reaches the slot sensor not when Dispenser is not empty Save your program. Put a part yourself on Belt 1 then lift a part in Dispenser to start the operation. Test your program on PETRA 2. Open Example00 and save it as Timer1.rss. Estimate the time (via a stopwatch on mobile) for a part on Belt 1 to reach its loading point to the Gripper Arm. Verify this using TON and TOF. Write down the time here: 3. Open Example00 and save it as Timer2.rss.

Write a program that takes a part from loading position of Belt 1 to Gripper using the following specs: i) The part should reach the gripper without timer being reset even if a part is lifted in the Dispenser (i.e. it is not empty). ii) The Timer should only be reset when you place a part yourself beneath detector L2 (one on the left is L2 one on the right is L1). Lab Report (Part A): Lab report should be hand written. You have to add theory by yourself in the lab report. Your lab report must include following points: Lab title Objective of this weeks lab Answersto the following questions: (Note: a reading of Chapter 5 and 6 of your Curriculum Manual may be beneficial in answering the following.) 1. Can a program operate if both the Latch and Unlatch rungs are ON at the same time? 2. Is the output Unlatch instruction retentive? If the Output Unlatch instruction has set an output address OFF before power is removed, the output address will be retained OFF or ON when power is returned? (Hint: create a simple program in RSLogix Micro Lite to test the conditions given in this question) 3. Create a program in RSLogix Micro Lite to test the TON instruction and use it to draw the following timing diagrams in response to a rung condition that varies in the following manner: TON Instruction Rung You have to draw the timing diagram of the EN, TT and DN bits of TON in response to the above timing diagram.(AssumeTON rung is ON for 20 seconds as shown in diagram and your timer should run for 10 seconds) 4. Using the same program in RSLogix Micro Lite test the TOF instruction and use it to draw the following timing diagrams in response to a rung condition that varies in the following manner: TOF

Instruction Rung You have to draw the timing diagram of the EN, TT and DN bits of TOF in response to the above timing diagram. (Assume the pulse shown is of 10 seconds and your timer has to run for 10 seconds.)

5. Using the same program in RSLogix Micro Lite test the RTO instruction and use it to draw the following timing diagrams in response to a rung condition and reset conditionthat varies in the following manner: RTO Instruction Rung Reset Instruction You have to draw the timing diagram of the EN, TT and DN bits of RTO in response to the above timing diagrams. (Assume the first pulse is for 30 seconds and your timer should run for 10 seconds). 6. If the time base is 0.001 and the Preset is 5500 the time delay in seconds will be? 7. If the timer rung conditions goes OFF during the delay time of an RTO timer, which of the following happens: a) TT goes OFF and the Accumulator resets to zero b) TT stays ON and the Accumulator freezes c) TT goes OFF and the Accumulator freezes d) TT stays ON and the Accumulator resets to zero (Hint: Create a ladder logic program in RSLogix Micro Lite to test the above conditions) Analysis of this weeks lab

RSLogix Emulator
Procedure (for Emulator):-

Carry out Programming Exercise 6.4 in RSLogix Micro Lite. Lab Report (Part B): You have to add theory by yourself in the lab report. Your lab report must include following points (in addition to what you answered for PETRA): Lab title Objectives of this weeks lab Answer the following questions: i) Can an output be used as an input to drive another output? If yes, draw a small ladder diagram to show it. ii) Can multiple outputs be energized using the same rung? If, yes then how? Analysis of this weeks lab Conclusions Note:- Each Student is required to submit the experiment manual on the day of next lab regardless of their attendance in the previous lab (deadline: 2nd May for Syndicate A and 3rd May for Syndicate B). Please do not forget to bring the filled experiment manual along with you at the designated time of the PETRA lab for your group.
