Sustainability Statement

RSHP takes its obligation to address growing concerns regarding sustainability seriously. As part of a wider design team, the practice has undertaken exhaustive research into a responsible approach to energy consumption, technologies that harness passive energy sources, and systems that reduce energy consumption and regulate harmful emissions. The practice endeavours to apply the results of this research to every scheme regardless of size or budget. At One Hyde Park: The Residences at Mandarin Oriental in conjunction with the services engineering team at Cundall a series of sustainable initiatives have been developed and incorporated into the overall design. These include: A geothermal strategy using ground water from an aquifer some 150m below ground level. Heat added and stored in the aquifer by the building in the summer will be extracted in the winter, upgraded using a heat pump, for heating tap water and the building itself. Balancing heat in and out sustains use of the aquifer for future generations. In the long term, this approach will reduce the primary energy consumption of the building as well as the emission of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. This strategy is in excess of the Greater London Authoritys minimum requirement to provide a minimum of 10 per cent of the developments energy requirements using renewable sources. Highly-insulated faades will be shaded using integrated solar blinds and fixed privacy screens. Using solar sensors, the blinds are automatically deployed to reduce solar gains only when required. Daylight is, therefore, optimised whilst spectacular views from rooms are preserved. All perimeter rooms have operable windows for natural ventilation which, when opened, automatically turn off the local cooling. Green roofs and ground-based planting areas, as well as providing aspect and amenity act as a sponge, greatly reducing the speed with which rainwater runs off the building surfaces before passing into a series of tanks forming a second stage of attenuation and reducing the impact of the development on the existing sewer systems. In addition, rainwater will be collected and stored to be used for irrigation of the planted areas of the scheme.

Key Materials
Pre-patinated copper alloy the privacy screens were fabricated using pre-patinated copper alloy, where the colouration of the patina was derived from the brickwork infill panels on adjacent neighbouring buildings. The aspiration for the patina was to capture the rich variegation and texture of the brickwork. The screens are fabricated using cast stainless steel end brackets, extruded aluminium skeleton, with profiled perforated copper alloy sheets and stainless steel trims Steelwork all visible steelwork is coloured dark grey to match the dark ironwork to the adjacent buildings. The structural system for the circulation cores takes its lateral support via a steel grillage from the adjacent pavilions, with horizontal Y frames which, in turn, offer lateral stability to the staircases, resulting in a two-storey expression of vertical support and horizontal restraint at alternate levels. The nodes and connections are expressed with precision steelwork detailing Concrete all exposed elements of the concrete frame are pre-cast components, cast using bespoke steel shutters. The final finish to the surface is achieved by acid etching which exposes the limestone aggregate and the mica content of the concrete mix. A clear sealer is then applied Glass the majority of the glass used in the development has a low iron content, resulting in a high degree of transparency and avoiding the green tint usually experienced in conventional annealed glass
