Mobile Transport Loading Facilities Loading facilities for mobile transport can be separated into those handling refrigerated

atmospheric pressure liquid at approximately 33C (2 F! (for loading ships and barges! and those handling ammonia liquid"#apor at atmospheric temperature $C (3%F! to %&C ($&&F! (for loading transport truc's and railcars!( The transfer of refrigerated ammonia is through large high)#olume insulated piping systems at lo* pressure( +tmospheric)temperature ammonia is heated and pumped through smaller, lo*er)#olume piping systems( $- .efrigerated +mmonia Loading Facilities These facilities transfer refrigerated ammonia from refrigerated storage tan's to barges and ships (see Fig( 3!( The principal equipment is transfer pumps, insulated transfer line, flexible loading arms, and a displacement return system to return #apor from the barge or ship( These systems all require cooldo*n prior to liquid transfer and inerting after liquid transfer( The cooldo*n is done *ith the liquid at a controlled rate and the flashed gas is returned to the storage tan' and refrigeration system( The transfer pumps are usually #ertical canned pumps to accommodate the suction liquid at its saturation pressure and temperature( The transfer lines are similar to those in an ammonia plant refrigeration system but are larger due to the high pumping rates( /mergency shutoff #al#es are pro#ided to shut off flo* during an emergency condition( The loading arms contain s*i#el 0oints that allo* the arm to be extended and retracted for mating up *ith the barge or ship connections and also pro#ide flexibility for mo#ement of the barge or ship( + piping system is also pro#ided to transfer the barge or ship tan')displaced #apors to the storage tan' and"or shore)side refrigeration system( 1oth the liquid and gas lines should ha#e emergency disconnect coupling at the shore)to)#essel connection( These disconnects are utili2ed if the #essel mo#ements are greater than the loading arm3s allo*able mo#ement or if other emergencies arise that may be disastrous to the barge or ship( + nitrogen header should be pro#ided at the loading station( + nitrogen line should be pro#ided to the apex of each loading arm( This line should contain a bloc' #al#e at grade and a chec' #al#e minimum distance from the loading arm connection( 4ther nitrogen purge connections should be pro#ided to inert or blan'et the loading arms and connections( 5ro#isions should be made to displace the ammonia liquid in the loading arms subsequent to loading completion( The materials of construction for the liquid ammonia system should be impact)tested carbon steel rated for 3&& +678 class( 9al#ing and #al#e trim should be suitable for refrigerated ammonia ser#ice( The ammonia #apor return line can be carbon steel rated for $:& +678 class and be suitable for *arm ammonia ser#ice(

2- +tmospheric Temperature Mobile Transport Loading Facilities These facilities transfer ammonia at medium pressures and atmospheric temperature (see Fig( %!( The ammonia is maintained in a liquid state by the pressure in the containing system( The loading facility *ill be comprised of a refrigerated tan' or tan's, refrigerated liquid pumps, a heater (heat exchanger!, pressuri2ed spheres or bullets, *arm transfer pumps, liquid loading arms for connecting to railcars or truc's, and a #apor return line to the pressuri2ed storage( The refrigerated ammonia is pumped by high)pressure pumps, approximately $<2: '5a (2:& psig!, through the heater and then to storage spheres or bullets( The spheres and"or bullets pro#ide surge capacity in loading facility operation( =hen railcars or truc's are to be loaded, the connections are made to the #ehicle tan's, transfer pumps started, liquid transferred to the #ehicle tan', and #apor returned to the storage spheres or bullets( The loading system should ha#e a strainer, flo* measurement instrument, flo* totali2er, and a flo* control #al#e in the liquid line( The #apor return line should ha#e a bac')pressure control #al#e to maintain the pressure in the #ehicle tan's( The loading connections, liquid and #apor, to the #ehicle tan's may be flexible hoses or s*i#el)0ointed arm connections( The final connecting couplings should ha#e bloc' #al#es and nitrogen purge connections( + nitrogen purge header should be pro#ided at each railcar and truc' loading location to pro#ide nitrogen to purge loading connections prior to and after loading and to purge the #ehicle tan's if required( +ll lines and connections that could contain air or be susceptible to air ingress should be purged and"or blan'eted *ith nitrogen( +n emergency eye*ash and sho*er should be

pro#ided at each #ehicle loading station for personnel should personnel contact spills or large lea's( 5ressure relief #al#es should be placed on systems that may be bloc'ed in during preparation for loading operations to accommodate thermal expansion of the liquid( The materials of construction can be carbon steel rated for $:& +678 class( 9al#e trim and accessories should be for standard *arm ammonia ser#ice(
