Notes from the Principal:

Hello Hickory Families, Hickory Elementary School has received notification from the Title I office that we will be the recipient of additional funding to assist our learners in the areas of Reading and Math. After careful consideration, speaking to teachers, looking at recent classroom assessments and funding sources, we have decided to place an additional teacher in Grade Two. Some of the students in Mrs. Rodgers, Mrs. Stotelmyer, and Mrs. Holsingers classes have been re-grouped. These students will be receiving notification of the change, and their parents and guardians will be invited to attend a question and answer session on Thursday, March 6th at 6:00 PM in the school Media Center. The purpose of this meeting will be to answer any questions you may have. This new grouping will take effect on Monday, March 10th. The Maryland State Assessment (MSA) will be taken by our students in third, fourth and fifth grades. Test dates are as follows: Reading March 4th and 5th and Math on March 11th and 12th. The Science MSA will be given to fifth grade students only on April 1st and 2nd. Congratulations to Mrs. Cox fourth grade students for they will be taking the new pilot PARCC assessment in Math, they will be exempt from the MSA Math test. For more testing information please check out the Hickory School website, www.hickoryelementary.weebly.com. WELCOME to Mrs. Jean Yurek, our new second grade teacher. Mrs. Yurek is a Highly Qualified Teacher who has recently taught at Lincolnshire Elementary. Mrs. Yurek has had various short and long term positions within Washington County Public School System. I am confident that this addition to our teaching staff will enable us to re-group the students in Grades Two and Three, to maximize their potential. Best of luck to our fifth grade students involved in the Battle of the Books Competition this spring. They have been very busy reading and discussing over twenty books for the county competition at Eastern ES on March 15th.

Respectfully,

Mrs. Kuhna
