Snow
removal
costs are
piling up
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
As the snow piles up this win-
ter, so does the cost of removing it
for Shamong Township.
At the committees meeting on
March 4, township administrator
Sue Onorato presented what the
township has spent thus far this
winter, acknowledging that the
total of $112,000 may still in-
crease.
Purchases of rock salt have to-
taled approximately $63,000 in-
cluding a 200-ton order that is ex-
pected to be delivered the week of
March 10.
Our salt barn was full at the
beginning of winter and now it is
about empty, Onorato said. Our
200-ton order will only fill it about
halfway, so well require another
order to fill it for next winter.
The township has spent $7,000
in fuel costs and $12,000 in truck
repairs. Onorato has said previ-
ously that she is looking into the
purchase of a new snowplow

Committee to continue
to monitor traffic speed
on Grassy Lake Road
truck, as both are more than 20
years old. The township will see
some of the snow removal costs
returned to it as it plows 17.3
miles of county road. Onorato
said the township can expect a
payment of approximately
$78,000 from the county.
Thanks, Sue, this is depress-
ing, Mayor Ken Long said with a
laugh.
In other news:
Grassy Lake Road resident
John Angermeier commended
the committee for the job it has
done since concerns about speed-
ing on the road were raised at the
Feb. 4 township committee meet-
ing, but said work still needed to
be done. Angermeier said that de-
spite a noticeable increase in
state police enforcement and de-
crease in overall offenders, he is
hopeful the committee will con-
sider the installation of speed
bumps on the road to further re-
duce speeding and traffic. Long
said the township will continue to
evaluate the situation and how it
will fit in the townships road
projects for the upcoming year.
The committee granted ap-
provals to township engineer
Dante Guzzi and Onorato to sub-
mit an application for a federal
Department of Transportation
grant referred to as a TIGER
grant. The grant is specifically for
large road projects as it is a mini-
mum of $1 million and is typical-
ly awarded to entire counties as
opposed to municipalities. The
township applied for the grant in
2013 for the repaving of Atsion
Road in its entirety but did not re-
ceive it. Guzzi advised the com-
mittee to submit the application
again this year as the informa-
tion from last years application is
already on file and that it would
be a much easier application
process a second time around.
Investors Bank was author-
ized as the depository bank for
the township.

The Sun
For some Indian Mills School
students, a life on the gridiron
may await them, but former
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiv-
er Jason Avant wants to ensure
New Jerseys students are pre-
pared for any walk of life.
To encourage students to work
hard and always focus on doing
their best in school as well as in
life, Avant joined with the New
Jersey Education Association
and the Eagles Radio Network, 94
WIP, to challenge public school
students throughout the state to
make a pledge to be one of his
A+ Achievers. The students of
Indian Mills School rose like Ea-
gles to meet that challenge.
Sherry DuBoff, a basic skills
teacher at IMS, read about the
program and decided to take ac-
tion. Students were expected to
study their playbooks by doing
homework, studying and reading
as well as listening to their coach-
es, teachers and parents. The
challenge extended beyond the
classroom as students were ex-
pected to eat right by avoiding
candy and junk food and stay in
condition, exercising at least four
days per week.
Participants were required to
fill out a pledge card and keep
track of their accomplishments
for three weeks.
Thirty-one IMS students suc-
cessfully completed Avant's chal-
lenge and submitted pledge cards
for review.
Most schools sent in bulk en-
tries, however, in keeping with
the spirit of personal dedication
and responsibility, IMS families
submitted their entries individu-
ally, school district publicity co-
ordinator John Rudman said in a
statement. NJEA was so im-
pressed by our families' efforts
that all 31 students who partici-
pated in the program received of-
ficial Eagles jerseys with Jason
Avant's autograph and a certifi-
cate at the Read Across America
assembly on Feb. 28.
IMS Principal Nicole Moore
said the contest is exactly what
he school works to teach students
every day.
"The contest encourages stu-
dents to develop personal goals
and to work hard and do their ab-
solute best to achieve these
goals, Moore said. This theme
of setting and attaining goals is
one that is aligned with what we
try to instill in our students, so
we felt that participating as a
school was a perfect way to get
our student body engaged in this
process."
The NJEA echoed Moores sen-
timent.
We are really proud of the
students and staff for all of the
hard work they put into this con-
test, NJEA spokesperson Dawn
Hiltner said. It is important for
young people to develop good
habits that will help them be suc-
cessful in school and in life.
These students are setting a great
example by being A-plus achiev-
ers.
Rudman was impressed by the
students commitment and
thankful the opportunity existed
for them.
Congratulations to all of the
winners! Thank you to Jason
Avant, NJEA and 94 WIP Sports
Radio for their sponsorship of
this contest. Special thanks to
Sherry DuBoff for coordinating
the event, Rudman said.

E
ver since the school shooting
in Newtown, Conn., in Decem-
ber 2012, school districts across
the country have done their best to im-
prove school security.
Some have hired armed guards to
stand watch in school buildings. Some
have improved security systems, lock-
ing all exterior doors and filtering visi-
tors through one main entrance. Some
have installed metal detectors and
other screening devices. Some have
done all this, and more.
New Jersey officials recognize the
need for increased school security, and
they want to do something about it
or, at least, they want to study what to
do about it.
The state Senate and Assembly re-
cently established a School Security
Task Force that will ultimately give
recommendations on how to improve
school security and safety. The group
will also make recommendations on
building security and assessment
standards for current school buildings
and new ones to come.
Some of the areas of focus they will
study:
Placing screening systems at
school entrances
Using biometric, retina or other
advanced recognition
Stationing police officers in each
school building
Requiring advanced student and
visitor identification
Conducting an official study on
school security with a panel of indus-
try experts is a tremendous, and long
overdue, idea. Just like with student
testing and budgeting requirements,
its a good idea to have a standardized
system for security at schools through-
out New Jersey.
But this begs the question: How will
we pay for whatever this task force
recommends?
Lets say, for example, the task force
recommends a biometric, retina or
other advanced recognition system
for visitors entering school buildings,
and our state government then passes
that bill. How are our already-cash-
strapped school districts going to pay
for what sounds like an expensive sys-
tem?
Studying school security on a
statewide level is a great first step.
Making recommendations on how to
improve security is a natural second
step. But a necessary third step must
be how any required security en-
hancements will be paid for, and by
whom. In an age when schools are hav-
ing trouble paying for teachers, its
hard to imagine biometrics being easy
to fit into the budget.
Tighter school security
Safer is always better, but whos going to pay for it?
Your thoughts
Do our schools need tighter security?
Should state government play a role in
telling school districts what they must do
in regard to school security? Share your
thoughts through a letter to the editor.
