One UI presidential candidate withdraws; two more to be named today
One of five finalists for the position of president of The University of Iowa, whose name remains
confidential, has withdrawn from consideration, according to David Johnsen, DDS, chair of the
UI Presidential Search Committee and dean of the UI College of Dentistry. On Friday, the first
two candidates were announced: Philip Furmanski, executive vice president for academic affairs
at Rutgers; and Mark P. Becker, executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at the
University of South Carolina. The names of the two other finalists will be announced today.
Bush: Immigration bill will work
President Bush said his stalled immigration overhaul will be revived and his embattled attorney
general won’t fall under a Senate vote of no-confidence. “I believe we can get it done,” Bush said
of the immigration bill that has run into trouble on Capitol Hill. “I’ll see you at the bill signing.” He
also dismissed a planned vote against Attorney General Alberto Gonzales as purely political.

Crews exchange greetings after shuttle docks successfully

Roller coaster scare leaves riders hanging

Making-faces charge dropped in Vermont
A prosecutor won’t proceed with charges against a woman who was arrested for staring and
making faces at a police dog. After all, the prosecutor reasoned, the four-legged witness can’t
testify. Jayna Hutchinson, 33, of Lebanon, New Hampshire, was facing trial this week on charges
of cruelty to a police animal and resisting arrest, but the case was dropped.

Spurs dominate, take 2-0 series lead

RESEARCH STUDY: Healthy adults between 21 and 45 years of age are invited to participate in a research study on
