From the Dean
The Faculty of Economics and Business has a rich history of intellectual endeavour and an outstanding reputation for diversity and excellence in teaching, learning and research. We are part of a vibrant and international learning community incorporating academics, students, alumni, business and government partners, and other universities and research institutions. Our graduates are leaders in their chosen elds, with many holding senior positions in the business, professional and government communities within Australia and around the world. Domestically and internationally, the Faculty is recognised as one of the leading faculties of its kind in Australia. In December 2006 we became the only Australian associate member school of CEMS, the Community of European Management Schools; and we are the only Australian Faculty to have been awarded three premier accreditations both business and accounting accreditations from AACSB International, and EQUIS accreditation from the European Foundation for Management Development. In addition, a number of Faculty programs have professional accreditation. Our human resource management and industrial relations programs are accredited by Australias leading professional human resource body, the Australian Human Resources Institute; our accounting programs are jointly accredited by CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia; and our business information systems majors are accredited by the Australian Computer Society. These accreditations put the Faculty in company with leading institutions worldwide. They also reect our commitment to providing you with a university education that is at the cutting edge of knowledge, is intellectually rigorous, and has contemporary and professional relevance. Inspired Learning
Our innovative approach to teaching and learning is informed by best-practice techniques and the most recent research ndings. Our aim is to inspire the imagination, curiosity and enthusiasm of our students. Our Teaching and Learning Plan actively encourages students to learn from various sources and we offer many opportunities for students to optimise their learning experience: Our Peer Mentoring Program is designed to help new students build social and academic networks. Experienced students assist new students settle into university life and introduce them to other students and the Universitys broad range of extracurricular activities. Free workshops, organised each semester, cover topics such as orientation and transition, writing and analytical skills, mathematics revision, and exam preparation. A range of activities, tours and social functions are held during the rst few weeks of semester to provide a productive and positive introduction to the University. Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) support students who want to achieve their highest possible academic performance. High-achieving senior students run small groups of informal study sessions to help new students master the curriculum. Online self-help resources, together with face-to-face assistance, provide study and academic support. Students requiring assistance to write reports and assignments can access self-help tests that pinpoint where they might need some extra focus. International Networks
The Faculty of Economics and Business is part of a vibrant global learning community incorporating academics, students, corporate partners, governments, schools, and other universities and research institutions. The University has formal links with many of the worlds leading universities. Our global network of partner institutions covers research collaboration, joint teaching projects and staff and student exchanges across 37 countries in Europe, North America and Asia. The exchange program enables students to complete a portion of their degree program overseas and have the results credited towards their Sydney enrolment. The program is open to full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students. A postgraduate degree from The University of Sydney can kick-start your international career. Global companies are always on the lookout for postgraduate students with an international outlook. Many of our degree programs either offer a major in international business or incorporate units of study that give an international perspective. A signicant number of our staff and students come from, or have studied, overseas, making for a rich multicultural environment.
Many of our exchange partners may offer tuition in languages other than English, giving students an opportunity to develop these skills whilst on exchange. Professor Steve Elliot Chair, Discipline of Business Information Systems Professor Elliots research work has focused on the strategic management of information systems-enabled innovation, particularly in electronic commerce. He is currently researching the impact of e-business on the B2B banking sector and information systems-enabled innovation in procurement Dr Richard Gerlach Chair, Discipline of Econometrics and Business Statistics Dr Gerlachs research interests lie mainly in nancial econometrics and time series. He also has an interest in estimating logit models incorporating misclassication. Associate Professor Russell Ross Chair, Discipline of Economics Professor Ross research interests are in public policy and labour market issues. He has written extensively on the Australian labour market, focusing on the under-utilisation of labour, the economics of childcare, the participation of married women, and the labour market status of Indigenous Australians and other disadvantaged groups. Professor Ross teaching interests are in applied microeconomics, especially labour economics and public economics. Professor David Johnstone Chair, Discipline of Finance Professor Johnstones research is in the statistical foundations of nancial markets. He has published papers in prestigious international journals on topics concerning statistical decision-making and behavioural models of decision-making (which underpin the new eld of behavioural nance).

For over 80 years the Faculty has been dedicated to scholarship and learning; research expertise and teaching are our traditional strengths. Our academics are some of Australias leading experts in economics, business and government. Professor James Guthrie Chair, Discipline of Accounting Professor Guthries research and teaching interests include public sector accounting, auditing, accountability and management, social and environmental reporting and auditing, management of knowledge and intellectual capital and the measurement of intangibles. He also consults on public and private sector management, management of knowledge, intellectual capital, budget performance, and annual reporting strategies. Professor Gail Pearson Chair, Discipline of Business Law Professor Pearson is a leading academic in the eld of commercial law. Her research work is concerned with technical legal questions; issues of disclosure and persuasion; the interaction of formal rules with informal rules; and the location of rules in a particular historical or social and economic setting.

A management-focused course aimed at developing leadership potential. Students develop the knowledge and skills relevant to understanding both traditional and emerging security challenges. This program draws on a wide range of disciplinary elds, including defence, international relations, environmental studies, strategic studies and law. Students are equipped for career paths in international security in the public and private sectors and with international and non-government organisations. This degree provides training in the eld of logistics and supply chain management, with a particular emphasis on management and operations. Logistics is currently one of the most popular areas of study with plenty of job opportunities, especially in the Asia-Pacic region. This program brings together the organisational and strategic aspects of people management with the theories and techniques of coaching psychology. The MPA is designed for existing senior public servants of national, state, provincial and local governments. It provides a practical education experience to enhance existing skills. Public sector employees will be able to transfer skills from one agency/ministry to another. Professional Accounting
Master of Professional Accounting
The Master of Professional Accounting (MPAcc) program provides the basis for professional accreditation with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA) and CPA Australia. It delivers knowledge, understanding and expertise in professional accountancy and is suitable for students who have not studied accounting subjects previously. In the Faculty of Economics and Business we approach accounting from a critical perspective and encourage a sense of enquiry. How is accounting practised? How should it be practised? We work closely with industry, commerce and the accounting profession to ensure the course content is up-to-date and relevant. The Discipline of Accounting has an outstanding international reputation for research, learning, development of resources, and journal publishing. If you are looking for an in-depth understanding of accounting for use in an executive or managerial position, consider an Accounting major within the Master of Business or Master of Commerce. Students fullling the requirements for CPA or ICAA accreditation complete a dened set of elective units of study which are outlined in the Faculty Handbook or on our website. Master of Business
The Master of Business program develops leadership potential through a thematic approach to the study of business. This approach hones skills and competencies in business communication, strategic thinking, decision analysis, effective group work and leadership. Fused with these elements are an enhanced understanding of the nature and role of business in diverse economic, political and social contexts. The program provides the critical soft and hard competencies to help ensure your business career success by focusing on strategic learning rather than just on technical knowledge. Specialist study is undertaken through one of the majors or through a selection of elective units. The core units emphasise experiential learning through simulations, exercises, multimedia presentations, guest lectures, case study analyses and discussion of readings and contemporary issues. Your fellow students in the program will be experienced professionals from around Australia and overseas. Highperforming students can undertake research and an industry-based group or individual business project. Graduate Certicate in Marketing
The Marketing program is strategically focused. It emphasises critical and analytical thinking and the integration of marketing with other elements of an organisation. Students develop an understanding of consumer behaviour and purchase decision-making, integrating theory and practice from many branches of the social sciences. There is a strong emphasis on accountability in marketing and demonstrating a return on marketing investment. The program incorporates the development of teambuilding, presentation skills, initiative, and business planning skills. The teaching is dynamic and participatory. Students also have many opportunities to gain experience in the marketing eld through our strategic alliances with major Australian companies and other organisations. Students interested in further study, and who attain a credit (65%) average in the Graduate Certicate in Marketing, may be eligible to upgrade to the Master of Commerce. Please note that this award course is currently offered as a part-time program. Entry requirements A completed bachelors degree, graduate diploma/certicate or equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution (at a standard acceptable to the Faculty) or ve years relevant work experience. Master of Organisational Coaching
The Organisational Coaching program provides students with an advanced, integrated understanding of professional, executive and workplace coaching and the wide range of organisational processes within which workplace coaching is embedded. This program combines the organisational and strategic aspects of people management with the theories and techniques of coaching psychology. It is an ideal program for people working in human resource management and related elds who wish to apply modern coaching techniques in the workplace. Entry requirements A completed bachelors degree or equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution with a major in Organisational Studies and/or a major in Psychology and three years work experience in a relevant area such as general management, organisational psychology, general psychology or coaching. The advanced coaching units of study offered are very intensive, and the number of students admitted is strictly limited on a session-by-session basis. The Faculty selects applicants in order of merit, based on: academic qualications in human resource management and/or psychology; work experience in human resource management and/or applied psychology; current professional and career requirements; publications and reports in relevant elds, and availability to attend classes. Fees
The fees for coursework programs are based on a cost per annum. Tuition fees are renewed annually and may be varied during the period of study. Credit
Students offered a place in the Master of Professional Accounting, Master of Commerce, Master of Economics or Master of International Business may be granted credit for foundation units (maximum of 4) based on units of study previously completed at The University of Sydney or another university. Credit is automatically assessed at the time of application for admission. See course details for further information on foundation units in these programs.
Course Scheduling
To help you manage both professional commitments and study, units of study are taught primarily in the evening (generally from 6pm to 9pm). There are, however, some units of study taught in block mode over weekends or throughout weekdays. Summer and Winter Schools add to the exibility of teaching times.
Upgrades
Students offered a place in a graduate certicate or graduate diploma course may be eligible to upgrade to a masters degree upon completion of at least 3 units of study at a standard acceptable to the Faculty.
Study Workload
University guidelines set an upper limit on the amount of study that students can undertake per semester. The workload for full-time students is 24 credit points (usually 4 units of study) per semester, for Summer School it is 12 credit points (usually 2 units of study) and for Winter School it is 6 credit points (usually 1 unit of study). Full-time students often spread their workload to include 1 unit in Summer School, 3 units in Semester 1, 1 unit in Winter School and 3 units in Semester 2. A part-time workload is 1 or 2 units of study per semester (excluding Summer and Winter School). Due to time constraints students can study only 1 unit in Winter School.

For your records, please photocopy your application form and all documents and keep them in a safe place. Applications for Semester One (February/March) should be lodged by the end of November in the year prior to enrolment and applications for Semester Two (July) by the end of May in the year of enrolment.

How to Apply
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
1. Select your course and start date Read the course details in this prospectus thoroughly before selecting the course(s) you wish to apply for. Visit the Faculty website (www.econ.usyd.edu.au) and the International Ofce website (www.usyd.edu.au/internationalofce/) for a wide range of helpful information, including Frequently Asked Questions and details of our agents worldwide. Select up to two courses to apply for, in order of preference. You must enter the precise course name and CRICOS course code as shown in this application form. If your rst preference is not successful, your application for your second preference will be considered. 2. Check if qualications are required For your application to be successful, you must meet the necessary English language and academic entry requirements. 3. Complete the application form A non-refundable application processing fee of AUD$100 must be paid with each application. We accept bank cheque, bank draft or credit card payment. Payment must be to The University of Sydney. Credit card payment must be made by completing the Credit Card Payment Form. To download this form, or for more information, visit www. usyd.edu.au/internationalofce/. We do not accept cash or personal cheques. Read the instructions carefully and write your details clearly. You must complete all sections. You must include at least one email address. 4. Provide original or certied copies of all documents If your documents are not in English, we require ofcially translated versions as well as copies in the original language. Letter of acknowledgement Once your application has been registered by the Admissions Ofce you will receive a letter of acknowledgement. Our application assessment process is thorough. It can take six or eight weeks to process coursework applications. To ensure the fastest response time please follow our application instructions carefully. 7. Offer letter If you meet all the conditions for entry, a Firm Offer will be issued. With a Firm Offer you will receive two more documents: a Conditions of Offer Form and an Acceptance Form. Conditional offers may be issued for applicants who: have not yet met the Universitys English language requirements need to provide further academic transcripts (eg nal semester results) need to provide other specied documentation (eg certied copies or translations). Any credit to be granted for previous tertiary study will be noted in the offer letter. If requested, an offer for an academic course and an offer for English language preparation can be packaged. Accepting your offer Follow the acceptance instructions outlined in the offer and pay the rst semester tuition fees and compulsory Overseas Students Health Cover (OSHC) as required. Tuition fees, OSHC fees and other study-related costs will be detailed in your letter of offer. Read and sign the Conditions of Offer Form, complete the Acceptance Form, and return both to the International Ofce. For high demand programs or programs that have limited places it is important that you accept your offer within the time frame given in the Letter of Offer. If you do not, any quota in place for specic courses may have been lled. You should allow sufcient time to obtain a visa (this varies considerably from country to country and may incur additional costs) and for any scholarship applications. 9. Electronic conrmation of enrolment (eCOE) An eCOE is sent to you (and to your agent if you are using one). You will need this to obtain your student visa. For more information on student visas contact the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (www.immi.gov.au). 10. Information pack When your eCOE is sent you will also be sent an information pack. This provides detailed information about living and studying at The University of Sydney. It also contains forms to book temporary arrival accommodation and to request airport reception. 11. Enrolment and Orientation Approximately two weeks before the start of semester you will enrol at the University and take part in an Orientation Program. Quotas
There is a limited number of student places available for entry to certain degrees at the University of Sydney (a quota). It is possible that not all students who meet the published entry requirements for these degrees will receive an offer. Once a quota has been filled any subsequent applications received will be assessed for the next available semester. A quota may be reached before the application deadline, so it is advisable to submit your application as early as possible. Applications received after the deadline will still be considered where the quota has not been reached. Students who obtain a firm offer of admission (an offer without any conditions) must accept this offer and pay the first semester fees, as detailed in their offer letter, to confirm a place in the following years entry. The offer will remain valid only as long as there are places available in the course offered. The offer may be cancelled if payment is not confirmed (and an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment issued). Students whose offers are cancelled \can apply for entry in subsequent years.
APPLICATION DEADLINES
