Oppression, organization, militancy, liberation, activism: these are some of the buzz words that will help viewers examine and synthesize the political climate for LGBT people over the past 40 years, as documented by those who lived through it, with the Centers newly created archival exhibition Into the Streets !

Members of the GAA (Gay Activists Alliance) protest outside Rizzo Headquarters in 1972.

Into the Streets! is the first in a series of quarterly archival exhibitions the Center features throughout 2010, funded in part by the William Penn Foundation. Rare and original documents and ephemera from the Centers John J. Wilcox, Jr. Library and Archive make up the majority

Making its debut at the Center with an opening reception Thursday, January 14 from 6:30-8:30 PM, the exhibits kick off event features light food and drink. This will be the first opportunity to view Into the Streets! featuring a timeline of protest marches and political actions from the late 1940s through the present day and highlighting pieces from the Centers vast archival collection. Rare documents will be on display, including: an original copy of the first openly progay magazine, ONE, from January 1953; an original drawing for the program cover of the 1965 ECHO (East Coast Homophile Organization) Conference; various posters; pamphlets, ephemera, and organizational records from the 1970s gay liberation movement; rarely seen photographs from the various special collec-

These items will be on display for the public in the Centers newly designated archival exhibition space in the Centers lobby alcove. Over the past several months, this space has featured exhibitions organized by various local LGBT institutions, including the Mazzoni Center, the LGBT Black Archivists Society of Philadelphia, and the Philadelphians, MC. In conjunction with this exciting exhibition, the Center will feature unique community programming through March of 2010, giving the public a unique opportunity to hear from the people at the Center organizing the exhibition and to engage in dialogue about the challenges and triumphs the community has experienced over the years, as well as what is to come! At the end of its run, the exhibit is available for travel throughout the community.

Reflecting on the Holocaust Exhibit

history as a community. One afternoon, Director of Center Services Candice Thompson sat down with members from another organization based in Philadelphia, the Holocaust Awareness Museum, to share how the Center was able to host such a comprehensive and moving exhibit.

As the Center reflects on what this exhibit meant to the community, we are always thinking about one particular instance that demonstrates the importance of preserving our

Over the past two months, the Center has experienced many moving, special moments as a result of hosting the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum traveling exhibit, Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals: 1933 1945. At the opening reception in October, the Center welcomed over 100 guests, and soon the word was out that such a unique exhibit was here in Philadelphia for the first time ever. In fact, the Center received prime placement in The Philadelphia Inquirer with a feature story in the Sunday edition, creating a dramatic increase in the number of exhibition visitors, educating our friends and neighbors about a little known part of LGBT history.

Discussing logistics, programming, budgets, and other important but admittedly dry topics, the group spent some time at the end of the meeting seeing the exhibit itself and reading the words on each panel. Taking in the personal stories and the pictures of those individuals who experienced the Holocaust, one visitor stopped at one of the panels. This visitor, a Holocaust survivor, said that she did not know what happened to her neighbor. Because of the exhibit, she finally found out: her neighbor perished in a concentration camp because she was a lesbian and Jew.

Members of the William Way LGBT Community Center are encouraged to attend this important meeting and to offer their feedback to the Board candidates. All members are welcome to attend the event!

Members of the Center may vote one of three ways: by returning their ballot in provided self-addressed envelopes sent with the voting package in the mail; by dropping off their ballot at the Center before noon on Tuesday, January 26, 2010; or, by bringing their ballots to the 2010 Annual Meeting and voting after the Board candidates have been introduced and spoken.

Philanthropy Corner:
Automatic Credit and Debit Deductions

You will receive a ballot in the mail to vote for the Centers 2010 candidates for Board of Directors. Contact Josh Kruger at jkruger@waygay.org or 215-7322220 for more information.

Mark your calendar! The Centers 2010 Annual Meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at 7:00 PM.

With the current economic climate, its difficult to make ends meet let alone set aside additional funds for charitable giving. Thats why we are urging many of our members to enroll in our automatic credit and debit card deductions program! Lets say you make an automatic contribution of $40 monthly over the course of 2010. This amount, less than youd spend on your morning coffee monthly, becomes $480 annually. If the Center can get 100 of its members to enroll in this small deduction program, weve just raised $48,000! And, to be a member of the Centers Cornerstone Society, donors must contribute only $85 per month!

Dear Jessie and Jordan:

Ask Jessie and Jordan

I regularly contribute to the Center, and Im getting things together to do my taxes (that time of the year again, ugh!) -Way Ahead of Tax Season Dear WATS:

Can the Center provide a receipt for my accountant and me?

Just give us the amount youd like charged each month, and well take care of the rest. And, you can increase, decrease, or stop this automatic charge at any time. If you would like more information about how this program works or if youd like to enroll, contact Development Coordinator Josh Kruger at jkruger@waygay.org or 215-732-2220.

Just imagine how much of a difference you can make without even thinking about it! Thirty people automatically giving $50 a month for a year would pay for all of the Centers winter utilities through 2009 - 2010!

Thank you for being a member of the Center! Every single gift is important, and each contribution is worthy of our sincere gratitude!

With tax season coming up, donors may request that the Center mail them a copy of all contributions for the 2009 tax year. Many donors will automatically receive this information based upon their level of giving. Contact Development Coordinator Josh Kruger at jkruger@waygay.org if you have any questions. And, thanks again! We couldnt keep dancing without your gifts!
