Part -I Compulsory Question 1 [20]

1. Which e-m wave is longer than X-Ray but shorter than light wave? 2. Write an equation of Lorentz force F acting on a charged particle q moving in a magnetic field B with a velocity v in vector form. 3. What is the value of power factor in a series LCR circuit at resonance? 4. An a.c generator generates an e.m.f given by E = 311 sin (100t) V. Find the rms value of the emf generated by the generator. 5. What is the necessary condition for obtaining interference of light? 6. How is the electric vector E, the magnetic vector B and velocity vector c oriented in an electromagnetic wave? 7. A circular coil having 50 turns, each with an area of 0.01m2, carries a current of 2 A. Calculate its magnetic dipole moment. 8. A straight conductor of length 0.4 m is moved with a speed of 7 m/s along the direction of a uniform magnetic field. What will be the emf induced, if any, across its ends? 9. In a graphical variation of emf induced with time for the output of an ac generator, mark the peak value of emf induced and the time period. 10. Determine the work done in rotating a bar magnet through 360 degree in a uniform magnetic field? 11. State the SI unit of magnetic moment of a bar magnet, indicating its direction. 12. For observing Fraunhoffer diffraction from a single slit, what type of wave front should be incident on the slit? 13. State Amperes circuital law in mathematical form. 14. Fraunhoffer diffraction from a single slit of width 1.24 10-6 m is observed with light of wavelength 620 nm. Calculate the angular width of the central maximum. 15. A rectangular coil of area 50 cm2 and 100 turns is placed perpendicular to a magnetic field of 10-2 Wb/m2. If the coil is withdrawn from the field in 40 ms, calculate the emf induced. 16. A wire of length 10 cm, carrying a current of 10 A is placed at an angle of 53 with respect to a magnetic field of strength 0.1 T. Find the force experienced by the wire. 17. Mention any two special effects/properties of an LCR circuit at resonance. 18. Obtain the ratio of the interference fringe widths obtained with monochromatic red light ( = 660 nm) and ultraviolet light ( = 330 nm). 19. Draw the electronic symbol for npn transistor. 20. Name an e-m wave which is used in the detection of fake currency. Part II Section A (Attempt all questions) Question 2 a) State and prove tangents law. [3] b) Write an expression for the Biot-Savarts Law in the vector form. Derive an expression for the magnetic field at the center of a circular coil of radius R, carrying a current I. [3]

c) Two very long straight parallel conductors carrying currents I1 and I2 in vacuum as shown in the figure. Derive an expression for the force experienced per unit length by one wire due to the current flowing through the other wire. Hence define the fundamental unit of current, i.e. an ampere. [3]

Question 3 a) An alternating emf of frequency 50 Hz is applied to a circuit with a resistor of 20 , an inductor of 100 mH and a capacitor of 30 F connected in series. Determine the impedance of the circuit. What is the angle by which the current leads or lags behind the applied emf? Represent it with the help of phasor diagram. Also determine the resonant angular frequency for the circuit. [4] b) Two very long (infinitely) conductors PQ and RS kept parallel to each other in vacuum at a distance of 20 cm. They carry current of 5 A and 15 A, respectively in the same direction. Find the resultant magnetic field at a point M which lies exactly at the midway of PQ and RS. [3] c) A helium nucleus completes one round of a circle of radius 0.8 m in 2 s. Find the magnetic field so generated at the center of the circle. [2] Section B (Attempt all questions) Question 4 a) State Huygens Principle. Using Huygens Principle, prove the laws of refraction. b) Name any two electromagnetic waves. State any one similarity and one difference between them. Question 5 a) In Youngs double slit experiment, what is meant by fringe width? State two ways of increasing the fringe width, without changing the source of light. [3] b) Define wave front. What type of wave front is obtained by (i) point source of light, (ii) Line source of light.[3] c) State one similarity and one difference between interference of light and diffraction of light. [2] Section C (Attempt all questions) Question 6 a) Draw a labeled diagram of a common emitter amplifier. Also draw the input and output waveform. [4] b) Why NAND gate is called a universal gate? Draw the symbolic diagram of the NAND gate and prepare its truth table. Show how an AND gate can be obtained using one or more NAND gates. [4] Question7 [4] [4]
