1. Explain the definition in welding according to AWS or British Standard (BS) 2. Give the main difference among Welding, Brazing and Soldering in general. 3. Explain the difference between welding and casting processes in general. 4. Looking at the engineering side and economic side, how do you think for a selection process of joining on steel plates using process among: welding, nut and bolt (screwing), Adhesive Bonding and Brazing or Soldering. Which join process gives the stress which is axial direction (not the shear stress)? Explain what you choose. 5. As a metallurgist, how do you explain the use of metallurgical science to control the quality of welds to be free from defects! It is due to the fact that the welding heat resulting the changes in the material structure. 6. Briefly describe the level qualification of welding personnel in the world based on the International Institute of Welding (IIW) scheme and American Welding Society (AWS) scheme. Explain the duty or responsibility each welding personnel in related to Welding Job in general.

1. According to AWS the definition of welding is A joining process producing coalescence of materials by heating them to the welding temperature, with or without the application of pressure or by the application of pressure alone, and with or without the use of filler metal. AWS a3.0 AWS stated that welding is a process by heating a materials to produce coalescence in order to joining them, the pressure here is can be optional, and its the same with the filler, its also optional According to BS the definition of welding is Joining between two or more material in a plastic or liquid state using thermal (heat) or pressure or both. Filler metal with a melting temperature equal to the melting temperature of the parent metal can be used or not. (British Standards Institution 1983 : BS 499: Part 1) For BS, welding is a process to joining a materials between two or more, then its stated that using thermal or pressure or both. In AWS the pressure is an optional, but in BS the pressure is not an optional. For the filler in BS they are optional 2. In general welding, brazing and soldering differences can be pointed out like this: a. Welding : Joining a metals by fusing a similar metal together (Dis-similar metal cant be welded) b. Brazing : 2 or more metals are heated for joining together but a filler metal (alloy) is added to create a bond between metals (Dis-similar metal can be welded) c. Soldering : soldering is similar to brazing but the temperature that is done is soldering is much lower than brazing, anything below 450 degrees and used a filler metal is called soldering

3. The Difference between welding and casting processes are: a. Welding have a bonding between two or more metals

b. Welding needed a high temperature heat in order to get the coalescence c. Casting solidify longer than the welding

4. Welding is the suitable one considering the engineering side and the economic side, and also the stress is distributed equally. On the economic side some of the welding may be expensive or cheap among any other process but considering the stress distributed the welding is the most suitable one that can be use. 5. If the heat is the defect problem, the solution is to create the lowest temperature that we can weld so it doesnt really affecting the base metal. But there are consideration that we have to look at like the weld bonding, strength, and any other things. By looking at this consideration we can choose the temperature that is needed for welding 6. According to IIW: a. Welding Engineer b. Welding Technologist c. Welding Specialist d. Welding Practitioner According to AWS: a. Inspector b. Educator c. Radiographic Interpreter d. Supervisor e. Sales Representative f. Welder g. Fabricator According to SKKNI: a. Sub Bidang Pengelasan b. Sub Bidang Foreman c. Sub Bidang Welding Inspector, Supervisor, Practitioner Junior. d. Sub Bidang Welding Inspector, Supervisor, Practitioner Senior. e. Sub Bidang Welding Engineer.
