Redesigning a book jacket gave us the perfect opportunity to judge
books by their covers! In this project, we were asked to read three
books with meaningful storylines, developing characters, and unnatrac-
tive covers. We were then asked to choose one to research and know
like the backs of our hands so we could design new and improved
jackets for them.
Design front cover, back cover, spine, end pages, aps, and title page
for three book jackets: type based, image based, and non computer.
Three fully mocked up book jackets will be due Thursday, February 25.

ROALD DAHL was a British novelist, short story writer, poet,
screenwriter, and ghter pilot. He served in the Royal Air Force
during World War II and became a ying ace and intelligence
ofcer. Hes been referred to as one of the greatest storytellers
for children of the 20th century. His childrens books are known
for their unsentimental, dark humor. The BFG is a great example
of Dahls dark humor. Its about a giant who steals a little girl out
of her bedroom window and together they devise a plan to cap-
ture the other giants who eat children from all around the world.
With the help of the Queen of England, the Royal Army, and the
Royal Air Force, the giants are trapped in a hole in the ground
and fed the foulest vegetable in existence. This book was ded-
icated to Dahls daughter, Olivia, who died of measles at age
seven. I like his works because theyre the perfect blend of dark-
ness and whimsy & really, what more do you need?

S E ARC H
R O U N D O N E : R E S E A R C H
The BFG is about a little orphan, Sophie, who spots a giant one night during the witch-
ing hour. He sees her and snatches her out of her bed and runs to his cave in Giant Country.
At rst she is worried that he is going to eat her, but he explains that he is the Big Friendly
Giant and does not eat humans like the other giants do. The BFG likes to catch dreams and blow
them into little kids bedrooms at night. The other nine giants eat kids from all over the world every
night. When Sophie learns about this, she is determined to end it once and for all. Together, So-
phie and the BFG (along with help from the Queen of England and the Royal Army and Air Force)
concoct a plan to stop the giants.
O R I G I N A L C O V E R S
JARS OF DREAMS. Dreams oat around in a eld in Dream
Country and theyre invisible until theyre captured. Some are
really good and some are horrible nightmares--so bad that they
make the evil giants scream and thrash around in their sleep. The
dreams, when captured, look like light green jellysh oating
around, but theyre really small. The bad dreams thrash around
wildly when theyre caught. The BFG gets really disturbed when
he catches one of these, so he blows them into the mean giants
heads.
O B J E C T S
THE TRUMPET is long and thin and the BFG uses it to blow
dreams into childrens rooms at night. It doesnt make a sound.
Its long enough to stick into windows close to the kids. He also
used it to blow into the Queens ear so she would be more likely
to believe him and Sophie about the giants terrorizing the world.
S E T T I N G S
GIANT COUNTRY is the land where the BFG lives along with
the other giants. Its a desolate wasteland that doesnt seem to
be quite of this earth. The ground is at and pale yellow with big
blue lumpy rocks and dead trees like skeletons. BFG lives in a
cave, but the other giants just sleep sprawled out on the ground.
Giant Country doesnt show up on any map or atlas, so no one
knows it exists.
BFGS MANCAVE is in Giant Country and can be found by
sliding over a huge boulder revealing a doorway. Inside theres
a really tall table and chair, and the walls are lined with shelves
holding jars of dreams hes caught. The mountain in which the
cave is located is dark blue. The cave is pure darkness when the
stone blocks the door, but he has a light that appears to come
from nowhere. The dream jars are in every nook and cranny of
the cave, too, all along the oors and walls.

I WASNT HAPPY WITH THIS SET OF COVERS AT
ALL. I HAD GOOD IDEAS, BUT I DIDNT EXECUTE THEM
THE WAY ID ENVISIONED THEM IN MY HEAD. MANY
OF THE COVERS ENDED UP LOOKING MUCH SCAR-
IER THAN I INTENDED, WHICH IS BAD BECAUSE AL-
THOUGH THE BOOK IS A LITTLE CREEPY,ITS NOT
SCARY IN ANY WAY. WELL, MAYBE GOOD-SCARY.
DEFINITELY NOT THIS, THOUGH.

I FELT MUCH BETTER ABOUT THIS SET OF COVERS.
THEY WERE HAPPY INSTEAD OF SCARY, WHICH MADE
AN ENORMOUS DIFFERENCE. ONCE AGAIN, A COU-
PLE OF THE COVERS DIDNT TURN OUT HOW ID
PLANNED, BUT I LIKED THEM ENOUGH THAT I COULD
ELIMINATE THOSE THAT DIDNT WORK AND STILL BE
HAPPY WITH THE ONES I HAD LEFT. ONE GOAL WAS
TO MAKE THEM LOOK COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM
EACH OTHER.

MY TITLE PAGES, BUT I FELT THAT MY ENDPAGES ALL
LOOKED TOO SIMILAR. I DIDNT REALLY UNDERSTAND

NEXT GOAL WAS TO MAKE THE ENDPAGES AN UNEX-

FLAPS ALSO HAD TOO MUCH TEXT.

Its lucky for Sophie that he is. Had she been carried
