Finance Minister
Kwadwo Baah Wiredu

The Minister passed away on Wednesday

24th September, 2008 in South Africa. He
leaves behind his wife and 6 children.

Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu became a minister in

President J.A. Kufuor's government in 2001.
As Local Government and Rural
Development Minister (2001-2003), he estab-
lished his reputation as a down-to-earth
politician with a practical approach to issues.
He became Education, Youth and Sports
Minister in 2003, before replacing Yaw Osafo
Maafo in 2005 as Minister for Finance and
Economic Planning, a position he held until

Ghana's Minister of Presidential Affairs, said in
a statement.
Education
Born in Asante Akim Agogo, Baah-Wiredu
began his secondary education at the Kumasi
High School, Kumasi in 1967. He obtained the
GCE Ordinary Level Certificate in 1972, then
received his sixth form education at Prempeh
College, also in Kumasi. He proceeded to the
University of Ghana in 1974 and obtained a
B.Sc. in Administration (Accounting option),
followed by a four-year course with the
Institute of Chartered Accountants, qualify-
ing as a chartered accountant in 1985.
Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu worked at various
positions with the now-defunct Ghana
Airways airline and the Volta River Authority.
He worked as a Senior Consultant on com-
puter-systems and as Finance Manager of
Ananse Systems. In addition, he was a partner
in Asante Wiredu and Associates, an account-
ing firm, prior to becoming an MP.
Politics
Baah-Wiredu campaigned against the Union
Government (UNIGOV) concept put forward
by General Acheampong's Supreme Military
Council in 1978. He joined the New Patriotic
Party when it was formed in 1992, became an
MP in the Second Parliament of the Fourth
Republic after the 1996 parliamentary elec-
tions, and retained that seat until his death.

Association of Ivorian Residents in Ghana
On September 6th, ENJOY attended the Ivorian fundraising cocktail reception
at Tante Marie, in Labone.

The evening was hosted by the Ambassador of Ivory Coast and the Chairman of
the Association of Ivorian Residents in Ghana.

Staged at the well-known Ivorian restaurant Tante Marie in Labone,

Accra, the event boasted a good atmosphere, marked by a full guest
list, plenty of food and drinks, and a multicultural ambience.

Similar to other Africans living outside their home countries, the citi-
zens of Cote d’Ivoire who reside in Ghana elected to unite their fellow
brothers and sisters under a formal organization.

ing in Ghana is growing both in terms of quantity and quality. Unlike
the typical, transient diplomats, students, and traditional migratory

It is against this backdrop that the Ivorians living in Ghana decided to

lead the way in organizing their people to join efforts and play a role
in strengthning ties with their host country, Ghana, and to foster a
unique, forward-looking vision for the developement of their beloved
Cote d’Ivoire.

Mr. Hari finds that computers fascinate young
people, which makes them the main drivers of a
nation’s growth. In light of the large shortage of
ICT skilled labour force all over the world, Amar
Hari believes in the need to train the current gen-
eration well in ICT.

It was late afternoon on Friday August 8, 2008 when Mrs. Christiana Opoku-
Boamah departed to the world of the ancestors, a single event that will deny
her family and loved ones of her love, attention and dedication to service.

It is often said that every good deed deserves a reward, but unfortunately for us at Enjoy, her untime-
ly death has denied us the opportunity of ever rewarding or acknowledging appropriately the late Mrs.
CHRISTIANA OPOKU-BOAMAH, a sister, mother and astute businesswoman who opened the doors of
her company OPOKU TRADING to us as one of the main distributors of the Enjoy magazine in Kumasi.

Always affable, I can recall the last time we heard from her--she was requesting more copies of the
Enjoy magazine for her customers, who thronged her supermarket monthly for copies. She was always
available with a helping hand and a strong desire to provide her customers with the best.

Born on the 8th of October 1960 at Kintampo, she started school at St. Joseph’s R/C Primary, Wawase-
Obuasi and was later admitted to Wenchi Secondary School, after passing her common entrance exam-
ination. In 1981, she completed the Ordinary Level West African School Certificate Examination at the
Sunyani Secondary School. While in school, she assisted her mother in her trading business, an experi-
ence that served as the bedrock of her interest and success in running her own business.

Upon completing school, she worked briefly with the Department of

Agricultural Economics in Sunyani. She then married her husband
Mr. Opoku-Boamah while working as Cashier at the Ghana
Commercial Bank in Kintampo. She also worked at the Sunyani and
Kumasi branches of the Ghana Commercial Bank before starting her
own company, OPOKU TRADING, a business established by her hus-
band in 1989.

She was altruistic and kind and supported many charity works in
Kumasi. She passed away at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital
after a short illness, leaving behind her husband and 5 children.

She will always be fondly remembered by

many for her hard work, fortitude and rare
managerial acumen which enabled her to
nurture and grow OPOKU Trading from a sin-
gle–room retail shop to a household name
and wholesale colossus in Kumasi and Ghana
as a whole.

She has contributed her quota to the devel-

opment of the Ghanaian economy.

 Ramadan ends with Eid ul-Fitr

Ramadan or Ramazan is a Muslim religious

observance that takes place during the ninth
month of the Islamic calendar; the month in
which the Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet
Muhammad.

It is the Islamic month of fasting (sawm), in which

participating Muslims do not eat or drink any-
thing from true dawn until sunset. Fasting is
meant to teach the person patience, sacrifice and
humility. Ramadan is a time to fast for the sake of
God, and to offer more prayer than usual (5 times month of the Islamic year. Prayers, sawm (fasting),

CELEBRATE THE KUNDUM FESTIVAL …

The Kundum Festival is celebrated by the people

of Ahanta and Nzema in the Western region of
Ghana from August to September, after the
maize harvest. The festival is to thank the ances-
tors for a bumper maize harvest and to offer sac-
rifices of thanksgiving to the spirits of the ances-
tors for protection.

The Ahanta and Nzemah people migrated from

northern Ghana during the 18th century and set-
tled at their current home beyond the Pra River in
the southern part of the Western Region. They
speak the Nzema language.

The people of Apremdo celebrated the Kundum

The school’s students are intelligent, but have

experienced limitied or no success in traditional
school settings. Often in typical school settings,
the speical needs that these children have cannot
be met successfully, which can result in the chil-
dren being neglected or ignored. Also, parents
often are unsure how to effecitvely assist them, so
some of them do home-schooling or simply keep
the children at home.

Now Coledic provides high-quality education for

these children with the technology that they
need. It is the first centre in Ghana to provide each
child with his or her own laptop and to work on
electronic boards. Because classes are no larger

Parents are divided on using relaxers on their young girls’ hair.
Some may say yes and others may say no. Research shows
that the ‘’yes’’ have it. Hence the introduction of relaxers

For most parents who are not keen on relaxing their kids’ hair, the best age
for their young queens will be when they turn 18. However, it is safe to straighten/texturize your girl
child’s hair from age 10, and have it done professionally.

Texture of hair:
Though age is a prime determining factor, texture of the child’s hair is equally important and cannot be
overruled. The nightmares parents of children with coarse (thick) hair go through preparing these
young ones hair for school, party etc (if not relaxed) is enough for these parents to decide to relax the
hair at an earlier age in order to make it more manageable….As long as they can sit still and there is a
definite need for a relaxer…go for it. You are the mothers and you know the stress you go through
preparing their hair. My 5 year old had a texturizer at a reputable salon, we followed the directions and
her hair is now 100% easier to manage. I would do it again in future, say, in 12 weeks on the new
growth.

When analysing diseases of
the “affluent” among the
Ghanaian population, high
blood pressure is at the top
of the list. When the heart
pumps blood through the
arteries, the blood presses
against the walls of the
blood vessels. In people
who suffer from hyperten-
sion, this pressure is unusu-
ally high. If blood pressure is
elevated, the heart must
work harder to pump an
adequate amount of blood
to all the tissues in the body.
Often times, the result is
heart attack, stroke or death.
Since 1998, hypertension
cases in Ghana have
increased 4-fold from 60,000
cases in 1990 to 250,000
cases in 2005. In 2007,
hypertension and cardiovas-
cular disease due to high
blood pressure were the
number one cause of death
in Ghana’s major hospitals.
People are no longer eating
the plant based diet that was
so popular years ago. Fast
food, junk food, fried foods,
meats, dairy products, sugar
and salt have taken over the
plates and palates of most
Ghanaian households and
the results of such a diet are
devastating the lives of mil-
lions every year. Because
high blood pressure usually
causes no symptoms until
complications arise, it is
known as the “silent killer”.
Warning signs associated
with this deadly disease may
include frequen headaches,
sweating, rapid pulse, short-
ness of breath, dizziness and
visual disturbances. The fol-
lowing herbal remedies and
recommendations can be
used to assist in reversing
high blood pressure. The

1. Follow a strict salt-free diet. Lowering
your salt intake is not enough, so it is impor-
tant to eliminate all salt from your diet until

glutamate (MSG)”. Also avoid baking soda,

sod-cutting ceremony to inaugurate expansion proj-
ects at Labadi Beach Hotel, currently Ghana’s only 5-
star hotel.

The event, held on the hotel’s premises on August 29,

included Ministers, traditional chiefs and media person-
nel, who were given a tour of the site.

Located on the left-hand side of the hotel, overlooking

the sea, the large stretch of land will be the construc-
tion site for 60 new rooms, including two Presidential
suites and two junior suites. The additional suites, Work in progress on a portion of the land earmarked
which will be the largest rooms in the country, will for the expansion project at Labadi Beach Hotel
incorporate traditional interior designs intended to
showcase the Ghanaian culture. The project will also
include refurbishing the existing 100 rooms and 4 luxu-
ry suites.

According to the hotel’s management, the projects are

aimed at enhancing the quality of services offered to its
customers and setting the pace for the development of
the Ghanaian tourism sector by making it a first-choice
destination for foreign tourists.

Sudoku
Dear ENJOY reader!

Many of you have asked us about the origin of Sudoku. So we’ve

provided some relevant information, and, at the same time, made
the Sudoku easier to read and divided it in 3 difficulty levels.

So here’s some insight into the game:

Sudoku is a logic-based number-placement puzzle. The objective is to

fill a 9×9 grid so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3
boxes (also called blocks or regions) contains the digits from 1 to 9
only one time each. The puzzle setter provides a partially completed
grid.

Number puzzles first appeared in newspapers in the late 19th centu-

ry, when French puzzle setters began experimenting with removing

numbers from magic squares. Le Siècle, a Paris-based daily, published
a partially completed 9×9 magic square with 3×3 sub-squares in 1892.
It was not a Sudoku because it contained double-digit numbers and
required arithmetic rather than logic to solve, but it shared key charac-
teristics: each row, column and sub-square added up to the same
number.

Within three years Le Siècle's rival, La France, refined the puzzle so that
it was almost a modern Sudoku. It simplified the 9×9 magic square
puzzle so that each row and column contained only the numbers 1–9,
but did not mark the sub-squares. Although they are unmarked, each
3×3 sub-square does indeed comprise the numbers 1–9. However, the
puzzle cannot be considered the first Sudoku because, under modern
rules, it has two solutions. The puzzle setter ensured a unique solution
by requiring 1–9 to appear in both diagonals.

Completed Sudoku puzzles are usually a type of Latin square with an

additional constraint on the contents of individual regions.

Spaghetti with anchovies and breadcrumbs

METHOD
Cook the pasta and the raisins in
plenty of boiling, salted water until
the pasta is tender but still firm to
the bite. Gently heat half the olive
oil and the garlic in a frypan to
infuse the oil. Discard the garlic and
scatter breadcrumbs into pan. Fry
until golden and dry, stirring, tak-
ing care not to burn. Drain the
crumbs on paper towel.
Gently heat remaining olive oil and
soften the anchovy fillets until just
melted. Add the chilli flakes, pep-
per, parsley, oregano, pine nuts
and half the breadcrumbs and heat
briefly.
INGREDIENTS
* 400g spaghetti
* 50g raisins
* 4 tbsp extra virginolive oil
* 2 garlic cloves, smashed
* 30g (1/2 cup) breadcrumbs
* 6 anchovy fillets, chopped
* Good pinch dried chilli flakes
* Freshly ground black pepper
* 2 tbsp chopped parsley
* 1/2 tsp dried oregano
* 2 tbsp pine nuts, toasted

Drain the pasta and sultanas

(reserving half a cup of the cooking
water) and add to the pan, tossing
well. Add a spoonful or two of the
pasta water to help the sauce coat
the pasta, tossing well. Scatter with
remaining crumbs and serve hot.

To make the breadcrumbs, tear

stale sourdough or baguette into
pieces and whiz in a food processor.
