Safety Why to Care?

3) If we reduce number of Accidents we will reduce the chances that one of us will get Hurt

Hazards of Hydro jetting


Very High Pressure > 20,000 PSI *Just think - car tire pressure is 35 PSI

Piercing of Body Parts


Even small cuts can be Infected & lead to serious health issues

Flying debris/deposits Release of hazardous materials Noise Breathing Difficulty (water Vapour) Electrostatic charging of nozzles and lances.

Safety What to Do?


The next Slides explains the minimum steps to done for safe Hydro jetting work:

Understand and Follow Them

If you are not sure or feel un-safe


Stop work and ask for advice; we are here to help you

1. Permits

Valid Permit must be available at work site at all times. If permit is not at site STOP JOB

Permit should not be away from worksite or be taken by foreman or any of the workers

No Permit No Work

2. Toolbox talk
At site & At start of each shift Supervisors must:
Explain work to be done Explain Hazards & Controls Explain Permit requirements Check for understanding
Ask team members to tell you the main point in their own words.

Repeat Major Points. Document in writing & get

signatures of all workers.

3. Barricade Work Area


Barricade Area of effective range of the jetting equipment Use suitable barriers to prevent unauthorized entry Put Signs DANGER HIGH PRESSURE WATER around work area

4. Shield against water/debris


Protect against water splash, Use tarpaulin sheets to cover area
Around Exchanger specially back end; support with scaffold.
This will protect other people behind or outside jetting area

Air Coolers and exchangers at Height:

Use tarpaulin sheets with drain &hoses to Protect and to collect dirt water and debris

Always use drip pan to collect dirty water


Before it gets full Empty into Barrels

5. PPE
Hydro jetting Operators to use turtle suit &

Face Shields
It might be heavy but it will protect you

Always 2 operators, one taking rest & 2nd jetting swap at regular intervals

turtle suits are Armored re-enforced

6. Scaffold
Ensure TAG available, Signed & Valid Do not Modify Scaffold; Request your Supervisor to call scaffolding team.

7. Hydro-jetting Equipments
Machine must have fail safe system with

proper control mechanisms. (e.g. Foot


operated shut-off valve & Dump valve)

Before starting Jetting Machine Competent


Operator to perform full Inspection on Machine, Pressure fittings, Hoses, Lances, Nozzles and Safety equipments. Use Check List; Sign to confirm readiness for

safe operation.

8. Check Hoses & Fittings



Ensure all Hoses & Fittings are in good condition Ensure all Hoses have whip check
Prevents Injury If a hose connection separate

Ensure all Hoses & Fittings are laid down in supported and protected positions. Away from sharp objects No tripping hazard

9. Hydro jetting Operators


Pump Operator

Attend the pump unit & Ensure all


Equipments in Safe Condition keep close watch on the Jetting Lance operators for signs of difficulty or Lance /Gun operator

2 members; each rotate their duties


during any job to minimize fatigue One operator holding the lance or gun and the 2nd operator to watch the surrounding area for unsafe situations

If you are tired or do not feel good Stop Work & Request Replacement

10. Unsafe Act/Condition examples

No Protection/Cover at the back side People at that area can be hit by water jet and flying debris

Slippery Surface Hydrocarbon at ground (fire Hazard) No Barricades/ signs Water jet and flying debris
